The MCA is Australias Museum of Contemporary Art,
dedicated to exhibing, collecng and interpreng the work of
todays arsts. With the largest membership of any art educaon
associaon, VADEA is the peak professional associaon for theVisual Arts in New South Wales, representing the interests
of Visual Art and Design educators from K-12 and in other
educaonal sengs such as museums, galleries and universies.
In May 2012, over two irresisble days the Museum of Contemporary
Arts new Naonal Centre for Creave Learning (NCCL) opens
its doors to host a special VADEA conference. Members of the
Visual Arts community can learn about, explore and share in the
innovave and excing new facilies at the NCCL and consider
ways to bring contemporary arts practice into the classroom
environment.
Participants will take an interactive guided tour of the major
new exhibions:
Volume One: MCA Collecon features over 280 worksby more than 170 Australian arsts drawn from a period acquisions
which began with the constuon of the MCA in May 1989. This
new presentaon will reect the diversity of Australian contemporary
art over the past 20 years. This signicant collecon will provide
many starng points for case studies and curriculum development
in the years to come. Museum educators will guide parcipants
through the exhibion and showcase new interacve technology
that will bring the collecon alive for both students and educators.
Marking Time is an exhibion that explores the ways
in which arsts visualise me and its passing, across diverse media,
including drawing and watercolour, sculpture and installaon,
sound and light. An international exhibition selected by MCA
Senior Curator Rachel Kent, Marking Time will present major
works by eleven artists from Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Italy,
Japan, UK and the USA in the Museums spacious new top oor
galleries. Some works will be created during the course of theexhibion, others require viewer parcipaon, and several spill
into public spaces beyond the Museum.
Also on display will be Chrisan Marclays The Clock,
which comprises several thousand short extracts from cinema
history, each referencing a parcular me of day. Images of watch
or clock faces are edited together to form a connuous visual
sequence synchronised with real me of visitors in the gallery.
The lm suggests countless interlocking narraves across constant
changes in genres, eras, locaons and plotlines. This work provides
an excellent reference for exploraons of postmodernism and
digital media in the classroom.
Parcipants will also hear from key arsts represented in the
exhibions including Brook Andrew, Hany Armanious, HelenEager, Agatha Gothe-Snape, Lindee Lee, Angela and Hossein
Valamanesh. There will be opportunies to partake in workshops
run by many of these arsts, to explore the specialist learning
facilies within the NCCL, and to engage with excing new ideas in
contemporary arts education. There will also be an update on the Visual
Arts in the Australian curriculum - an important issue for all art educators.
This is your chance to be one of the rst to engage in professional
learning in the newly refurbished Museum of Contemporary Art
situated on the foreshore of Sydneys beauful harbour. This is
your chance to connect, to be inspired, and to learn.
