In t roduct ionVacuum filtration is used primarily in microbiological andanalytical procedures that involve collecting a particulate (bac-teria, precipitate, etc.) from a liquid suspension. Liquid pouredinto a funnel passes through a filter, which retains the particu-late, and filtrate can be collected into a filter flask, directly orvia a vacuum manifold. Applying vacuum reduces processtime compared to gravity flow.

Advantec supplies a wide range of vacuum filter holders and accessories. Select from glass, polysulfone, or stainlesssteel assemblies with funnels holding from 22 to 1,100 mL.See facing page for more details on supports.

In t roduct ionPressure type filter holders can be used for ultracleaning or sterilizing liquids and gases. Advantec holders havebeen designed to maximize flow rates and to minimize holder resistance and can be used in either batch or continuous filtration procedures.

Advantages of Pressure F i l t rat ion• Higher differential pressures are possible, resulting in

higher flow rates. The pressure differential across the mem-brane is not limited to atmospheric pressure (≥14.7 psi)

• Unintentional contamination downstream of the membrane is minimized

• Denaturation of proteins and other biological polymers dueto foaming downstream of the membrane is avoided

• Vapor accumulation and possible explosion can be avoided using an inert gas to pressurize solvents and combustible or flammable liquids
