Vacuum Components

DE-STA-CO vacuum components

Discover the "pneumatic hand", which always grips where mecha-

nical grippers cannot be used for reasons of space or system com-

patibility.

The principle: Vacuum suction grippers

The combination of vacuum generation using the ejector principle

and suction elements matched to the part offers space-saving and

economical solutions for handling and "pick-and-place" applica-

tions.

Achievable Vacuum

Vacuum generation according to the ejector principle produces

a coarse vacuum with a magnitude of max. 85 % of the ambient

pressure.

As a general rule 60% to 80 % vacuum is used for dense surfaces

(e.g. metal, plastic, glass).

In the case of porous materials (e.g. wood, packing material), it is

necessary to determine the achievable vacuum through tests

before designing the gripper. A vacuum of 20 % to 40 % can be

assumed as a coarse reference value.

Forces on Suction Elements

As a matter of principle, 3 types of loads can be assumed for the

use of suction grippers.

■ Horizontal suction elements, vertical force

(part lifted)

FTH = m • (g + a) • S

FTH = Theoretical retaining force

m = Mass of part [kg]

g = Gravitational acceleration [9.81 m/s2]

a = Acceleration [m/s2] of gripper

S = Safety factor (at least 1.5, 2 for problem materials)

Vacuum Principles

■ Horizontal suction element, horizontal force

(workpiece pushed)

FTH = m • (g + a/µ) • S

FTH = Theoretical retaining force

m = Mass of part [kg]

g = Gravitational acceleration [9.81 m/s2]

a = Acceleration [m/s2] of gripper

µ = Friction value (depending on surface)

S = Safety factor (at least 1.5, 2 for problem materials)

■ Vertical suction element, vertical force

(vertically aligned part is pushed by vertically arranged

suction element)

FTH = (m/µ) • (g + a) • S

FTH = Theoretical retaining force

m = Mass of part [kg]

g = Gravitational acceleration [9,81 m/s2]

a = Acceleration [m/s2] of gripper

µ = Friction value (depending on surface)

S = Safety factor (at least 2, 4 for problem materials)

For combined loads, always assume the most unfavorable case.

Since it is not possible to determine the required data with the hig-

hest possible degree of reliability for problematic materials, tests

are always recommended to confirm the calculations.

Vacuum Components

Required Suction Capacity

V = n • VS

n = Number of suction element used on one vacuum generator

VS = Suction capacity (see table)

It is more advantageous of safety to use a number of decentralized

vacuum generators than one central vacuum generator. In the

event one suction element fails, the remaining suction elements

continue to operate.

Suction Element Selection

The construction shapes of the suction elements are selected

depending on the part.

■ Standard or flat suction elements

For flat and slightly wavy surfaces (e.g. sheet metal)

■ Oval suction elements

For slender, long workpieces such as channels or pipes

■ Bellow suction elements

For angular surfaces (between 5° and 30° depending on

diameter), arched round surfaces, sensitive parts and econo-

mic height compensation

■ Extra deep suction elements

For round or highly arched parts

■ Adhesive suction elements

For applications requiring the highest load capacity and

minimum horizontal displacement

Suction Force

The suction force depends on the effective suction element area

and the suction achieved.

FS = Pu • Aw

FS = Suction force [N]

Pu = Suction achieved [N/m2]

AW = Effective suction element area [m2]

Selection of Vacuum Generator

The following values for the suction capacity result from the

various suction element diameters based on experience

Up to 120 mm

Up to 215 mm

Vacuum Generation with CPI Suction Nozzles

The Ejector Principle

The compressed air is accelerated in a jet nozzle by reducing the

cross section. It flows out through a catch nozzle generating a

vacuum at the suction element connection.

Features

■ Minimum air consumption

■ High achievable vacuum level

■ Maximum reliability through simple layout (no moving parts)

■ Low weight

■ Integrated mounting possibility

The diagrams at the right apply for all CPI suction nozzles

Vacuum depending on operating pressure

■ High vacuum level even at supply pressure of 4.5 bar

■ Usual pressure variations in compressed air network have

insignificant effect on vacuum

Air consumption depending on operating pressure

■ Low operating costs through low air consumption

Evacuation time for volume of 1 liter at operating

pressure of 4.5 bars

■ Short evacuation times through high suction capacity
