Dear Friends,
Have you stopped to think about how frenzied our lives have gotten lately? Our daily walk seems to be a series of events strung so closely together that we
are forced to rush about with barely enough time to get from one place to another. It seems we never have time to do anything at a lei-
surely pace.
We even carry our rushing into our faith and church. We rush to church and wait im-
patiently for the service to end because we have so much to do that afternoon.
And God help the pastor of the service lasts 65 minutes. Because the pastor let the
service to go five minutes over, we are now going to be late to the restaurant – which will make us late to the mall – which will make us late to supper at Mom’s – which will
make us late getting home this evening. And we still have to help the kid’s do their homework before we can fall into bed to get up Monday morning to start it all over
again.
I can even hear some of you saying, “Hey! Would you quit describing one of my days.”
Because our daily walks are so busy, we tend to cut short our spiritual walks. We just don’t have time. Our spiritual “walk” is an expression for how we live our lives for
God. We were created to “walk” with God, to have fellowship with him, to hang around
where he is and to enjoy being in his presence.
Perhaps we should take a lesson from the pigeons and practice “Pigeon Walk Christi-
anity.”
“OK. That settles it. Now I know pastor has completely gone off his rocker and lost his
mind!”
Perhaps ... but stop and think a moment. Have you ever watched a pigeon walk? They look really weird when they walk. They bob their heads back and forth every
step they take.
Do you know why they bob their heads? It is so they can see where they are going. A pigeon cannot focus its eyes while it is moving. So they have to stop their heads dur-ing each step, refocus their vision and take the next step. Their head must come to a
complete stop for their eyes to focus. But once they refocus, they take the next step. Then they start the whole process over again: stop their heads, refocus, and resume
the next step.
FROM YOUR
PASTOR’S
HEART
Then one day it hit me: We need to walk like pigeons in our Christian walk. We
need to stop our heads and hearts, refocus our vision and take another step. The
Christian walk should always be stop, refocus, step, stop, refocus, step, etc.
Let’s be honest. There are times in our spiritual walk when, like the pigeon, we
have trouble seeing where we are going. It is at this point that we need to stop, refocus on God and take another step. I believe we are missing something very
important when we fail to build a series of stops into our spiritual walk. Those stops enable us to refocus our vision before we proceed with our next step in
faith.
Refocusing is pausing long enough to ask ourselves if we are doing is what God wants us to do at that time. If we are, take another step in the same direction. If
not, we take a step in a different direction.
Keith Miller wrote, “Christians have developed a kind of selective vision which al-lows us to be deeply and sincerely involved in worship and church activities and
yet almost totally pagan in our lives, and ... never realize it.”
Maybe it is time we took a lesson from the pigeons and began practicing “Pigeon
Walk Christianity” — Stopping, Refocusing and Stepping out for God.
We must slow the pace of our walk in life enough to ask whether we are walking
with God not only at church, but at home, at work, driving our car, etc. And we must stay stopped long enough to hear the answer. After all, our spiritual “walk”
with God is shown in every area of our lives.
I firmly believe that while it may sound weird “Pigeon Walk Christianity” has real
merit to it.
I pray that you will realize the most important walk you will ever take is your walk
with God -- especially the “Pigeon Walk Christianity.”
Shalom!
Pr. Warren
