Italy in US

Submitted by Leo Vadala

I recently received and want to share with you the following

notification from the Italian Consulate in Philadelphia.

Are you ready to celebrate the beauty of the Italian language?

Starting Monday, Italian Embassies, Consulates and Institutes of

Culture will be holding a number of must see (and hear) events*

as part of the 15th Week of the Italian Language in the World. This

year’s theme: “The Italian of Music, the Music of Italian.”

Our language is taking hold throughout the USA. Over 70,000

students in 800 schools across the country decided to take classes

in the language of Dante in the 2014/15 school year, bringing

Italian into 4th place among the foreign languages studied in the

USA. AP Italian attracted 2,573 high school students, calling

attention to its appeal in curricula nationwide.

*Check out the program of events in the US on www.italyinus.org

As you walk through the galleries of the Walters Art Museum, you may be struck by the remarkable beauty and breadth of its collection. More remarkable still, is the fact that this collection was born of the artistic interest and public-mindedness of just two men: William Thompson Walters and his son, Henry. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the two Baltimoreans assembled a diverse range of artwork from around the world—including everything from European master paintings and decorative arts to Greek and Roman antiquities and Far Eastern ceramics. Together, they collected nearly 22,000 works of art, and in doing so, they built the foundation for a museum that offers a one of- a-kind survey of 55 centuries of art. Today, the collection has grown to more than 35,000 objects. From ancient Egyptian mummy masks and medieval armor, to 19th-century French impressionism and turn-of-the-century art deco, you will see significant works of art from around the world.

Little Italy is situated just east of the

Inner Harbor and has one of the city's

busiest restaurant districts. It is so

named because of the large number of

Italian immigrant families that moved

into the area during the 20th century.

The neighborhood is still home to a

large and active Italian ethnic

community. Little Italy is also notable

as one of the safest neighborhoods in

the city of Baltimore, as the

neighborhood's reputation is such to

not allow crimes against the residents

caused by outside agitators.

Thanks to all who attended our first

event of the year! We had 70 participants who devoured 8 bushels of crabs, 100 servings of

pasta with crab sauce, and multiple pounds of Italian meats and cheese. Our kitchen crew

served up a perfect blend of spicy tomato and crab sauce that made the pasta jump into ones

mouth. A salad of romaine dressed with balsamic vinaigrette and parmesan disappeared almost

instantly. Sansone's seafood market gave us a great deal on crabs that were succulent and heavy. Thanks

also to the “Helping Hands” who worked to make the event a good time for all. Domenica Scavuzzo rounded

up a bevy of homemade desserts from multiple members who attended. Our Helping Hand volunteers who signed up

for this event were responsible for setting up, stocking our bar, procuring the crabs, serving the meal, and helping to

clean up. So far over 30 members have signed up to help and we hope more will decide to participate. See Tony

Ciotola, or any officer for more information about how you can help.

BOCCE TOURNAMENT BEGINS IN NOVEMBER

The “Fall Classic” bocce 3 or 4 person tournament will begin October 29th and last through mid December. We expect

4 to 6 teams will compete in the double round robin competition with the top two teams squaring off in a best of three

final. All games are played Thursday evenings at the club. A Banquet, open to all members, will host the award

ceremonies for the winners and will be held in December and include a full dinner and Italian sing along. Price for

the banquet will be $30.00 per person.

INITIAL MEETING SET FOR WEDNESDAY NIGHT

RECREATIONAL COUPLES BOCCE

Members interested in participating in a mixed mens and womens bocce night should plan on being at the club on

Wednesday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m. for an organizing meeting. The club needs members to help with this ongoing

event and the meeting will be to assess interest and get started. Those who cannot make the meeting should call Tony

Ciotola to express interest.

Due to Inclement Weather the Bus trip to the Alantic City Tropicana Casino

has been rescheduled to Sunday, November 1st. The Bus will leave from the

Club at 9:30 and returns approximately 6:00 P.M. Cost is $25.00 per person,

$25.00 to be refunded in play money. Please call Pinuccia as soon as possible

to reserve your seat on the bus 302-998-6191.
