Helping people with learning disabilities go to slimming groups if they want to
A research project
An InvitationYou are being invited to take part in a
research project. Before you make up your
mind it is important for you to understand
why the research is being done and what
will happen. Please read the following
information carefully. You can talk about it
with other people if you would like to. Ask
us if there is anything that is not clear or if
you want to know anything. Take time to
decide whether or not you want to take part
and talk to other people about this if you
would like to. Thank you for reading this.
Why Are We Doing This? Some people with learning disabilities
might like to join slimming clubs like
Slimming World. But sometimes they
might find it difficult to join a club, or to
take part. The aim of this project is to find
out what people with learning disabilities
need to help them to join slimming clubs, if they
want to.V5 17-4-14 1
Why Have I Been Asked? You have been chosen because
you have a learning disability. You
know about the kinds of things
that make it easier to for you join
groups and clubs. You know
about the kinds of information that
is useful to you.
Do I have to take part?It is up to you to decide if you want to take part. If
you do decide to take part you will be given this
information sheet to keep. You will also sign a
form to say you want to take part. You can
change your mind at any time. You do not have
to give a reason. Nothing will happen to you if you
change your mind about taking part. If you change
your mind after talking to us, please let us know
within a week. After a week, anything you already
said may be used for the research. This is
because it may be hard to separate and
cut out what you said.

What will happen to me if I take part? You can
choose
how to take
part. For
example,
you might
want to join
in a
discussion
group. Or you might want to meet with a
researcher and have a chat. Or you might want to
answer questions by email. Or you might want to
come with a researcher to a Slimming World
meeting.
What do I have to do?If you want to take part, call Liz Croot on
0114 222 1725 or email her at
[email protected] . We will then be
in touch to arrange what kind of events
you would like to join in.
What are the risks?

What will I get out of it?
We hope you will enjoy taking part in the
discussion group. We hope it will help
you to think about the kinds of things that
make it easier to for you join groups and
clubs. This might be useful for you. The
aim of this project is to find out what
people with learning disabilities need to
help them to join slimming clubs, if they
want to.
What if the project stops? If the project stops earlier than expected, we will let
you know.
Will anyone know I took part? All the information that we collect about you will be
kept private. We will publish reports about the
project, but we will not include your name or any
description of you.
V5 17-4-14 5
What happens to the results? The results of this project will be shared will
Slimming World. Some of the things you say
during the discussion group might be used in
reports or presentations. These will not include
your name or any description of you, so nobody
will know it was you.
Will I be recorded? We may make notes when we are talking to you
and some discussions may be recorded. We will
tell you if we are planning to record a discussion
and you can decide if you want to take part or
not. The recordings will be typed out afterwards,
and then the recording will be deleted. This is
called transcription. The transcription and any
notes that we make will be used only for the
project. They will not be used for any other
purpose without your written permission. No-one
outside the project will be allowed to access the recordings,
transcriptions or notes.

Who has paid for this? The project is paid for by the Medical
Research Council. They are a
government organisation that pays
for health research.
Has it been checked? This project has been checked to
make sure it isn’t doing anything
wrong, and won’t hurt anybody. The
people who checked it are the
Research Ethics Committee of the
School of Health and Related
Research at the University of
