Module 1 - Introduction

JATO V4

JATO V4 has been developed to provide the automotive analyst with an integrated, competitive analysis solution of un-rivalled power. It combines the world’s most

comprehensive automotive data with a suite of powerful, adaptable analysis tools.

JATO V4 is here to add value to your business through effective decision making, based on our data. It will help you to understand your organization’s competitive position and allow you to

set competitive prices; develop competitive model line-ups; create unique market positions and launch successful tactical initiatives.

It works by allowing you to select any data you require from a selection of databases and to place this data in a JATO V4 Workbook. From there it can be viewed and manipulated, either

by manually entering new values; or by using a range of pre-defined procedures. These procedures create Reports and Charts to highlight different aspects of the data.

The advantage of the Workbook system is that they can be updated whenever the data in the

database is updated. In this way they remain current until they are deleted.

Workbook data is selected via a Query. Queries can be saved independently of the Workbook

and used to create multiple Workbooks. The basic contents of the Workbook can also be changed at anytime (by amending its Query) and the procedures re-run to reflect the changes.

Saving Time

We have seen examples of users spending a great deal of time trawling through internet sites

and manually conducting work when JATO V4 can perform these tasks much quicker:

1. Find all the SUV vehicles equipped with Standard Satellite Navigation:

Internet search - 6 – 8 hours, JATO V4 - 3 minutes

2. Find the average price of Metallic Paint for the small segment:

Internet search - 4 hours, JATO V4 - 15 minutes

Note With training, users can become expert in data analysis using our many

procedures which automate the analysis process.

Training Objectives

The aim of this training manual is to provide you with a working knowledge of JATO V4.

This will allow you to use JATO V4 to access Specifications data and to manipulate this data

using JATO V4 tools (and Excel facilities where possible).

With appropriate training, you will be able to:

understand and use the main features of JATO V4,

understand and use the areas of JATO V4 that are particularly relevant to your role,

eradicate wasted time when analyzing automotive data,

provide valuable information that can be used in the decision making process,

create effective presentations.

Examples

There are many examples in this document that you can work through. They will give you a collection of workbooks to refer to, and manipulate, in order to understand creating Queries,

running the procedures and the way JATO V4 works. They will also allow you to discover which procedures are most relevant to your work.

Notes:

To create all of the workbooks, this document assumes that you have access to a

Specifications database.

All of these examples are based on German data, contained in the German single country

database. Feel free to use any other databases, although single country databases are

preferable to multi-country ones.

The Reports and Charts in this document are produced with Excel 2007, so your Outputs

may look different, but should contain the same data.

Some of the dialog boxes are quite complicated. For more detailed information on them,

please refer to the JATO V4 Procedures Supplement, JATO V4 User Manual, JATO V4 online help system (via the Help button on the dialog box) or a JATO Training

Representative.

Prior Knowledge

It is assumed that you have:

used Windows, and know how to use the mouse, windows menus and dialog boxes,

used Excel and have a working knowledge of basic actions such as creating files;

manipulating worksheets and using functions,

knowledge of automotive terminology, although this is not essential as JATO can help with

this.

Learning JATO V4

The JATO Academy has been created to develop, assess and certify users and it provides the basis for our World Class Training. For more details contact your JATO Representative or

Training Specialist.

Learning JATO V4 takes time and JATO is here to support your needs. If you require anything when learning, please contact us. Spending time with a JATO employee will also benefit you,

when starting to use JATO V4.

New users should follow the training schedule offered by their JATO Representative. The ideal

development process is:

Basic training two days (JATO training centre or on-site),

System use (two months),

Intermediate training two days (JATO training centre or on-site),

System use (two months).

Note We also offer a five day intensive course. If you would like more details

please contact us.

Non-users can also benefit from a Management Overview. This has been designed to equip

Managers and Senior Executives with details of what our products are capable of. The overview highlights include: ease of data extraction and data outputs, (such as Value Analysis, Options

Reporting, Revenue Share Report, Market Share Report and Specifications Matrix amongst others). Such overviews can last from one to three hours if required.

Definition of Specifications

All the items of data in the V4.5 Schema are defined in the Definition of Specs. This is an online library containing definitions and explanations for every subject, item and attribute in all

the database types.

Note You must be connected to the Internet, but there is no login process.

There are three ways to find a specific item/attribute:

In the Query by Conditions dialog box, select Definitions of Specs from the Choices menu and search for the item/attribute.

In the Query by Conditions dialog box, highlight the item/attribute and press the F4 function key.

In the populated JATO Worksheet itself, highlight the item/attribute and press the F4 function key.

Note You can also select a subject, which will then list all of the currently

researched items for that subject, but not all items are researched in all regions.

Once selected, JATO V4.5 will launch your internet browser and display the requested

definition:

The left hand section contains a list of all data subjects, appearing in alphabetical order, except for the Version and Segmentation subjects. Each subject has related items, (displayed in the

right hand section). Some of these items have attributes.

Subjects, Items and Attributes

A subject is a group of items, usually relating to one aspect of a vehicle, for example Doors:

Page 21: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

15

Doors can be broken down into smaller areas, such as Cargo doors, and each of these smaller parts is stored as an item.

Each item can have one or more characteristic, such as location, and these are called attributes.

Note All the subjects and items are defined in the Definitions of Specifications.

This is accessed by highlighting the subject/item in the Query by Conditions dialog

box (or the worksheet) and pressing F4.

Selections

A selection will include an item/attribute in the worksheet and is marked in the dialog box with a red tick:

To select an item/attribute, click on its subject and then either: right click on the item/attribute

or click on the item/attribute and click on Select.

Default Select

There are some items that are already selected when this dialog box is opened and they are defined in the Default Selections / Headers tab in Control Panel, (see page 123).

This is very useful if you usually want to see the same basic items/attributes in your Queries.

2. Enter a File Name of “German Specs” and click on OK.

The Workbook name will now appear in the Workbook title.

Note The file type is JATO V4 Workbook File and it will have a .JWX extension.

Saving the Workbook as an Excel file

Workbooks can be saved as Microsoft Excel files with an .XLS file extension. This enables you

to work with JATO V4 and have a copy of the Workbook which can be edited and formatted by

Excel users who do not have JATO V4.

Note Once you save a JATO V4 Workbook in Excel format, it ceases to be a JATO

V4 Workbook. The Query associated with the Workbook will be lost and you can no longer run procedures on it. So if you want to save a Workbook as an Excel

Workbook, or manipulate it using Excel facilities, you should save it as a JATO V4

Workbook first.

Go to the File menu/Microsoft Office Button menu and click on Save As. The Save as Type: is

Microsoft Excel Workbook and it will have a .XLS extension.

28

Note There is a possibility that there are no options displayed in your Workbook.

In this case choose a couple more Subjects and re-run the Query.

9. Close and save the Workbook.

Inserting a Query over existing vehicles

When you have created a worksheet that contains some data, you can run a previously saved

Query on the worksheet to add the selections from it to the existing data.

Note The conditions in the saved Query will not be added.

This is the existing Query:

Page 35: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

29

In the Query by Conditions box, go to the Edit menu and click on Insert:

Note Any saved Queries starting with JQ are JATO Queries. These Queries are the templates used to research Specifications Databases by segment. By inserting one

of these Queries all Specifications relevant to that segment will be added to the

Query.

Select the required Query and click on OK.

You will now see the new selections applied to the Query box:

Page 36: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

30

Note The name of the Query and the selections have changed, but the conditions

remain the same.

Check Append (to add the new selections to the existing ones) or Replace (to replace the old

selections by those in the Query template you have created).

Note If you run this new Query, do not save the changes.

Baskets

A normal worksheet contains one or more Queries, each containing one or more conditions. A

Basket is a worksheet defined by a single condition listing the Unique Identities of the vehicles in the worksheet. You can use a Basket as you would any other worksheet, changing the

selections or Query settings as you wish.

Note A Basket is useful if you want the same vehicles to remain in a worksheet

over a period of time, producing a static Workbook. In a normal Workbook, where the vehicles in the Workbook match conditions on items such as engine size, body

style and so on, the vehicles in the Workbook may change when you update the

database. Such a Workbook is dynamic.

To convert a Workbook into a Basket, delete the unwanted vehicles from the worksheet using

the Keep Highlighted or Remove Highlighted.

Note Using Choose by Make Model also converts a Workbook into a Basket.

Keep/Remove Highlighted

Note First decide whether it would be quicker to highlight the versions to keep or

the versions to remove.

To remove vehicles from the worksheet:

Excel 2000 to 2003: select the column/row headers of the vehicles and click on on the JATO

toolbar.

Excel 2007 to 2013: right-click on the column/row headers of the vehicles and select

then Remove Highlighted.

Note If you delete vehicles using the normal Excel Delete command, the

worksheet is not converted into a Basket. This can be useful if you want to remove

vehicles from Workbook temporarily. They can be replaced later by refreshing the

Workbook. However, until you refresh the Workbook, you should not use any V

facilities because V will work on the vehicles that were originally in the worksheet

in their original positions, not their positions as modified by Excel.

To keep vehicles in the worksheet:

Excel 2000 to 2003: select the column/row headers of the vehicles and click on on the JATO toolbar.

Excel 2007 to 2013: right-click on the column/row headers of the vehicles and select then Keep Highlighted.

Module 5 – Arranging the data in the worksheet

Horizontal/Vertical mode

Versions form either the rows or the columns in the worksheet, depending on whether you are using a Horizontal or Vertical layout.

Horizontal layout

Horizontal layout is useful for making lists. It is usually the best choice for Queries which include a few selections for many vehicles.

Horizontal layout produces a format, which is usually an Excel list, so you can use any Excel facility that requires a list. For example Auto Filtering, Sorting, and Pivot Tables.

To select it, either: click on on the JATO toolbar, or go to the JATO menu/ribbon bar and

click on Horizontal / then Horizontal.

Vertical layout

Vertical layout is useful for comparing vehicles. It is suitable Queries that include many

selections for a few vehicles.

To select it, either: click on on the JATO toolbar, or go to the JATO menu/ribbon bar and

click on Vertical / then Vertical.

Note The default layout mode is defined in the General tab within Control Panel.

Benchmark

This is the vehicle that all the other vehicles in the worksheet will be compared to, especially in Compare and Exception modes, Value Analysis and the Analysis Lines at the bottom of the

worksheet.

Click on any cell within the version and click on on the JATO toolbar / on the JATO

ribbon bar:

Page 38: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

32

The Benchmark is automatically moved to the beginning of the list of vehicles and its data is displayed in blue.

Note The Benchmark setting will be lost if the Query is re-run and must be

reapplied if required.

Comparison modes

In order to improve the data presentation, or emphasis the differences between vehicles you can use various data display modes.

Normal mode

By default, the worksheet is in Normal mode with no Benchmark selected:

To return to Normal mode, click on on the JATO toolbar / then Normal Mode on the

JATO ribbon bar.

Compare mode

Compare mode compares each vehicle to the Benchmark and replaces any matching data with

an equals sign “=”.

Select a Benchmark and click on on the JATO toolbar / then Compare Mode on the

JATO ribbon bar:

Note If you don’t select a Benchmark, the first vehicle in the worksheet will be

automatically made into the Benchmark.

Exception mode

Exception mode compares each vehicle to the Benchmark and groups any matching data.

Page 39: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

33

Select a Benchmark and click on on the JATO toolbar / then Exception Mode on the JATO ribbon bar:

Note If you don’t select a Benchmark, the first vehicle in the worksheet will be

automatically made into the Benchmark.

Compare plus mode

You can combine the effects of Compare and Exception mode.

Compare Plus mode compares each vehicle to the Benchmark and groups any matching data. Any remaining visible attributes that match have their data replaced with an equals sign “=”.

If the worksheet is in Compare mode, click on on the JATO toolbar / then Exception

Mode on the JATO ribbon bar; if it is in Exception mode, click on on the JATO toolbar /

then Compare Mode on the JATO ribbon bar:

Unique

In the current worksheet there is more than one occurrence of some vehicles:

Consequently, it is meaningless to carry out any operations that rely on using data from a

particular vehicle. To see only one occurrence of each vehicle, in the Query by Conditions box, go the the Choices menu and click on Unique.

If you re-ran the Query, the worksheet would look like this:

Page 40: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

34

Notes:

The following functions are not available if Unique is selected: Automatic Build,

Benchmark, Choose by Make Model, Compare and Exception modes, Keep and Remove Highlighted, Manual Build, Organise Vehicles and Selections, Procedures, Segment

Manager, User Defined Vehicles and View Options.

Unique applies to the whole workbook, unlike sorting which applies just to the last Query

run.

Unique is removed from a Workbook, by deselecting it and re-running the Query.

Page 41: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

35

Module 6 – Adding analysis data to the worksheet

If your Query includes the Retail (MSRP) or Base Price item, at the bottom of the worksheet

you may see some extra columns/rows containing Volumes, price and analysis data:

The period item is the Volumes sold for that period, (Volumes Weighting data).

Note In some instances, volumes figures might be identical for a number of vehicles in the worksheet. This is because the level of known data in the

corresponding Volumes database is insufficient to distinguish between the selected

versions.

Compare to Benchmark calculates the difference between the vehicle’s price and the

Benchmark’s.

Benchmark as comparison calculates the difference between the Benchmark’s price and

the vehicle’s price.

Note As these figures are the same you are unlikely to have both values in the

worksheet at once.

Compare to average calculates the difference between the vehicle’s price and the average price of all the vehicles in the worksheet, including the Benchmark.

Compare to average excluding Benchmark calculates the difference between the

vehicle’s price and the average price of the vehicles in the worksheet, excluding the Benchmark.

The inclusion of these extra lines depends on settings in the Control Panel. To see them, go to

the JATO menu/ribbon bar, click on Control Panel / and select the Analysis Lines tab:

Page 42: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

36

Check Price (Retail Price, Base Price) and this will enable the rest of the dialog box.

Including Volumes Weighting

Note Volumes data can only be brought into the worksheet if you have installed

the Model Mix database for the same country or region.

Check Apply volumes weighting based on: and select the period from the list box:

Including Analysis Lines

Check the Analysis Lines to be included in the worksheet:

Note Data will display the value as a number and Index will display it as a

percentage.

Click on OK. This will automatically add the new data to the worksheet (and re-run any procedures that have been run on the workbook).

the worksheet, (see module 4).

5. Once all the required versions have been selected, click on OK and the worksheet will look something like this:

Note The Version items displayed here are selected in the Choose tab in Control

Panel, (see page 124) and the Analysis Lines are selected in the Analysis Lines tab,

(see Module 6).

6. Select a Benchmark by clicking on any cell within a version and click on / on

the JATO toolbar/ribbon bar:

Note The Benchmark vehicle has changed colour and has become the first vehicle

in the worksheet. There are also more Analysis Lines.

If you wish to add more details to these versions, you can apply a Query to this worksheet:

Note The data that already appears in the worksheet is marked by a red tick.

Unique Identity has a condition on it, which shows that this worksheet is a Basket,

(see page 30).

Organise Vehicles and Selections

Organise Vehicles and Selections allows you to change the sequence of (or remove) the vehicles and selections in a worksheet.

Note These changes will be lost if you re-run the Query in replace mode.

7. Go to the JATO menu/ribbon bar and click on Organise Vehicles and Selections /

Module 8 – Build

Build works like a car configurator in the Internet. It allows you to add optional equipment to a

vehicle.

For example, you could add optional air conditioning to a vehicle when the competitor vehicle

has air conditioning as Standard. This way, some of the differences between vehicles can be

adjusted.

Excel 2000, XP and 2003:

Go to the JATO menu, select Procedures and click on Build:

The Build toolbar will now be displayed:

adds an option to the vehicle.

removes an option from the vehicle.

automatically builds vehicles using a set of specified rules.

defines the rules by which automatic build will work.

retrieves the original vehicle data (the data displayed before any Builds took place).

Excel 2007 and 2010:

Go to the JATO Edit ribbon bar:

in the Build section:

automatically builds vehicles using a set of specified rules.

defines the rules by which automatic build will work.

retrieves the original vehicle data (the data displayed before any Builds took place).

adds an option to the vehicle.

removes an option from the vehicle.

Manual Build

1. Run a Query, selecting one Model and a couple of Subjects, with Options/Incentives checked.

Note Audio and Paint are good subjects to select as they usually have options.

2. In the worksheet, select a couple of versions that have options:

Excel 2000, XP or 2003: select the column/row headers of the vehicles and click on on the

JATO toolbar.

Excel 2007 or 2010: right-click on the column/row headers of the vehicles and select then Keep Highlighted.

Note Using Keep Highlighted will convert the Workbook into a Basket, (see page

30) and the conditions in the Query will change.

3. Re-open the Query, check Replace and Build support and click on OK.

4. The resulting worksheet will look something like this:

If there is an option(s) for a Standard item it/they are displayed in the column(s) next to the

version, (for example Speakers).

If there the item isn’t Standard, the option is displayed in the version column, (for example

Disc autochanger).

5. To build an option, click on a cell within it and click on / in Build:

Page 50: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

44

The option name is now “built[option_code]”. The option text is now displayed in purple in the

version column, with the price in an added column next to the version.

To remove a Built option, click on a cell within it and click on / in Build.

Note This will return to worksheet to its original state.

6. Save the Workbook as “German Options”.

Note This build function is also available in the Options Viewer, (see Module 9).

Instead of building single options one by one, it is recommended that you use Automatic Build.

Automatic Build

This function builds options/packages onto vehicles for you in accordance with rules that you specify.

To see these rules, go to Build and click on / :

Page 51: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

Note Please do not amend any of these settings until you are familiar with Build

functionality.

Due to the fact that options and packages can be quite complex (multiple options for the same

item; several items in one option/pack; requirements and exclusions when building an option), it can be complicated to set the Automatic Build rules to do exactly what you want. Please

refer to the JATO V4 User Manual or online Help for more examples.

Depending on the available data, Automatic Built can build many options, only a few or none at

all (when benchmark has low equipment level or if competitors do not offer suitable options). It is always a good idea to check which options have been built.

Module 9 – View Options

Note In order to use the View Options, you must be in a worksheet that contains

option data.

The View Options allows you to:

view all the options for a vehicle/item,

build options onto vehicles,

see the option details if JATO V4 warns you about option conflicts when you are using the

Build toolbar.

Note You can have several View Options in use at once. This is a quick and

convenient way to compare options.

Viewing vehicle options

To view all the options for a vehicle, select the vehicle column/row header and click on /

on the JATO toolbar/ribbon bar:

The Options/Packs: box initially shows all the options available for the selected vehicle together with their prices. Any built items will be ticked.

Note Check Worksheet Options Only to see just the options for the worksheet

items.

The Comprises: box displays the contents of the highlighted option.

Note Check Show Attributes to see the options attributes.

The Relations: box displays the rules affecting the Building of the option. For example,

Building an option might require, or exclude, the Building of other options.

Viewing item options

To view all the options for a vehicle item/attribute, select it and click on / on the

JATO toolbar/ribbon bar:

This time Options/Packs: box initially shows all the options available for the selected item

together with their prices.

The options/packs can have a symbol next to them indicating their status:

- this option has been Built,

- this option is not needed: it has already been Built by another option; it is a mandatory requirement for the vehicle, or the option’s attributes match those of the vehicle’s standard

equipment,

- this option is now excluded by another option that has already been Built.

Building an option

1. Select an Item that has an option and click on / on the JATO toolbar/ribbon bar.

2. Click on Build.

Module 10 – Procedures

So far we have learned how to extract data from a database. Once the data is shown in the

worksheet, it can be analysed. JATO V4 supplies many different types of procedures that create reports and charts based on the Workbook data.

Note Each type of database has its own set of procedures.

These procedures will save you a lot of time because the results are produced automatically and they can be updated whenever any new data becomes available.

To see the list of available procedures, go to the JATO menu/ribbon bar and click on

Procedures / then Procedures:

Note The Procedures shown will depend on which type of database you are

currently using.

To select a procedure, double-click on it.

The following examples are based on the current data in the Workbook. As your data may be

different, the Reports and Charts are displayed as guides only.

Note The Reports in this document are displayed fully expanded, unless otherwise

stated. Some of the Reports can be very large when fully expanded especially if

they contain many versions/items.

Standard Report

Standard Report is useful when you have to create lists of the standard equipment on vehicles. It will only show items that are available as Standard.

1. Open the German Specs workbook.

Note For most specifications procedures it is advisable to use a saved Query rather than select the items manually. By doing this you can make sure that you are

always looking at identical vehicles/items in an order defined by you. And, of

course, it is much faster!

2. Ensure that the worksheet is in Vertical Mode (click on on the JATO toolbar, or go to

the JATO menu/ribbon bar and click on Vertical / then Vertical).

3. Go to the JATO menu/ribbon bar and click on Procedures / then Procedures, then

select Standard Report.

Standard Report creates a new worksheet with all the vehicles in the worksheet displayed one

after the other (their standard items beneath them):

Options Report

Options Report is useful when you have to create a spreadsheet that shows the complete

content and the prices of options or packages and which can be printed. It will only show items

that are available as optional.

There are two variations of this procedure:

Options Report (All options) creates a list with all options and packages of the vehicles in the worksheet,

Options Report (Worksheet options only) creates the same list, but it shows only the options and packages of the items selected in the worksheet.

4. Select the Options Report (Worksheet options only) procedure:

Options Report creates a new worksheet with all the vehicles in the worksheet displayed one

after the other (their optional items beneath them):

Note This example shows one option in expanded form.

Unique Options Report

Unique Options Report contains the same data as the Options Report, but the layout enables you to see which options and packages are common to which vehicles. It also shows the

Minimum, Maximum and Average Price of the options and packages to allow a direct price comparison.

There are two variations of this procedure:

Unique Options Report (All options) creates a list with all options and packages of the vehicles in the worksheet,

Unique Options Report (Worksheet options only) creates the same list, but it shows only the options and packages of the items selected in the worksheet.

5. Select the Unique Options Report (Worksheet options only) procedure:

Unique Options Report creates a new worksheet with all the matching optional items displayed

in the same row:

Note Options/packages will only appear in the same line if all their items and

attributes are identical.

6. Close and save the Workbook.

Ladder Report

Ladder Report allows you to display vehicles in a Ladder (a vertical table) showing each vehicle’s position in terms of its price (or any other numeric data). More than one Ladder can

be displayed, enabling you to compare over Make or Model.

Note Ladder Report can be used in any JATO V4 database.

1. Create a new Workbook containing the default select items for up to three Makes.

Note When comparing ranges that have a large number of versions, you should restrict your Query to significant versions only, otherwise the report will be

unreadable.

2. Select the Ladder Report procedure:

3. Select MSRP in Vertical axis; Make in Horizontal axis; Model and Unique Identity in Vehicle

description; add some label names and click on OK.

Ladder Report creates a new worksheet with the ladders displayed side by side:

53

4. Save the Workbook as “German Spec Procs”.

Price History

Price History creates a worksheet showing the changes in price for the vehicles. Using Excel

Outlining, it allows you to view varying levels of detail about the changes. It can also create a chart from the price change data.

Note When the Version Name or Model Name of a vehicle changes, it will keep the

same UID. Thus it is possible to track the price history of a vehicle across different generations of a model range. Sometimes, however, it is not possible to link all the

versions of a model, for example when there is a completely new engine or when

the new model generation has more versions than the previous one.

In the following example we are going to create a basic Price History table and chart for a small number of vehicles.

1. Re-open the Query, de-select two of the Makes, check Replace and click on OK.

2. If there are more than ten versions left, use Keep Highlighted to keep eight.

3. Select a Benchmark.

4. Select the Price History procedure:

Module 11 - Value Analysis

Value analysis is used to compare vehicles with the same or similar equipment levels and is

used if you want to:

decide where to place a new model within the market or a model range,

compare the pricing of similar vehicles in a single market, or across several markets,

assess the value placed by other manufacturers on a particular feature.

see how Incentives affect the price of a vehicle.

Note Incentives data is not available in all databases and you must have an

appropriate licence to see it.

The results of Value Analysis will never be 100% objective as it depends on: the vehicles

selected; the items compared; the method used and other variables as defined by the user. Therefore, it usually reflects your company’s view of the market as a whole.

Value Analysis is available in three basic forms: Full, Full Summarised and Summary:

Value Analysis (Full) is the basic Value Analysis tool used by JATO V4. It can be run with

or without options and built items and with Incentives data.

Note This worksheet can be further refined by running Advantage/Disadvantage

Report, Concise Display or Value Analysis Bubble Chart. Run Price Charts to view

the data in the form of a chart.

Specifications Matrix performs Value Analysis between individual vehicles.

Full Summarised Value Analysis compares a basket of vehicles to a Benchmark, dividing

the analysis into Specification and Engine sections.

Summary Value Analysis creates a compact worksheet layout that allows you to see at a

glance which equipment is standard on the vehicles.

Using your own values for any item/attribute is the simple way to create a meaningful Value

Analysis output. These are saved in a Value Set and applied during Value Analysis and other procedures. In this way any differences in equipment, no matter how small, can be adjusted

for.

If you are a completely new user of JATO V4, you will need to create one or more Value Sets.

Before starting this, you should think about which items you want to compare in Value

Analysis. The most suitable way to do this would be to create a Query and select all of these items.

Note This will save you time as you will only assign values for the items/attributes

you have specified.

Most organizations have predefined lists that reflect their view of the market and these Value

Sets can be copied from one PC to another, (taking care not to overwrite any existing Value Set files).

Once you have created one Value Set, you can use it as a basis to create new ones for different segments and countries. You can also copy it and apply different currencies to it.

Value Manager

Value Manager allows you to create, edit, copy and delete Value Sets. They are stored in .VAV

files in the My Documents\JATO directory.

Creating a new Value Set

1. Go to the JATO menu/ribbon bar and click on Value Manager / then Value Manager:

Page 64: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

58

Note There is a read-only file at the top called Blank Value Set. It is in effect a template reflecting the database you are working with and it will be used to create

your own Value Sets.

2. If there is an existing Value Set that contains many of the values that you want to use, you should select it; otherwise select the Blank Value Set and click on Copy:

3. Enter a new name and select the currency that you want the values to be.

4. If you are copying an existing Value Set you may apply a coefficient on the values of the

original. For example if you want the new values to be 10% higher than the original ones,

type ‘110’ in the Adjust values by box. The resulting Value Set will contain all the values of the original, but increased by 10.

Note This facility is useful to create values for an upper segment from values from

a lower segment or to apply inflation rates.

5. Click on OK.

Page 65: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

59

Adding values to a Value Set

1. Select the new Value Set and click on Edit:

Note The green area contains the subjects, items and attributes; the white area

will contain the values and the yellow area will contain rules that calculate the value

depending on the data in the worksheet.

2. Scroll down until you find the item that you want to assign a value to.

3. Click on the “+” grouping button to display its attributes.

Note The column used by Value Analysis will depend on which price type you have

selected in the Query. If msrp is selected, Value Analysis will read the values from

the Retail Value column; Base Value if Base Price is selected and Wholesale Value if

Wholesale Price is selected.

Single items

If you have an item with no attributes, or you want to value the item at the item level only,

enter a single value:

Items with attributes

To assign a value to more complex items that have several attributes, you can assign the

values on attribute level only or to the items and one or more attributes:

Air conditioning is valued at €919.81 and fully automated climate control – yes at €1,509.85.

When values are assigned for an item and one or more of its attributes, they will be additive. So in the above example, a vehicle that has Air conditioning as Standard, but no fully

automated climate control is valued at €919.81. If it had fully automated climate control as well, it would have a value of €2,429.66.

Items with locations

Page 66: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

60

Be very careful with items whose first attribute is location, because the value you enter for any

other attribute of that item is for one location only, not for the pair.

Electrically adjustable is valued at €17.38. This means that if a car has electrically adjustable

door mirrors on both the driver and passenger sides, it will have a value of €34.76.

Note This way of coding is necessary because the attributes can be different in

different locations, for example the dimensions of front and rear tyres.

Numeric Items

Numeric items such as Engine performance are calculated by the unit:

The value for 1 horsepower is €50, so a 100HP car will have a value of €5000.

Rules

Value Manager offers mathematical rules for the calculation of numeric values. The standard

Default rule is the simplest one and works much like the above example, but it allows for an

item/attribute to have a “standard value” so that negative values will apply to items/attributes that are below standard.

Click in the Rule cell and click on Select Rule:

Page 67: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

61

Select Default and set Threshold to the “standard value”.

For example, a tyre width of 185mm is standard for a certain class of vehicles. Setting

Threshold to 185.00 will cause sizes smaller than that to have a negative value.

The tyres have been valued at €2.51 per mm: a 180mm tyre width has a value of -€12.55;

185mm has a value of €0 and 200mm has a value of €37.65.

Note Each Rule type is described in great detail in the JATO V4 Procedures

Supplement and online Help.

Finding existing Rules

You can see all the Rules contained in the Value Set, by clicking on Find Rule:

To see the Rule in detail, click on Go To Rule.

Using Excel functionaliy to insert values

Excel functions such as copy & paste can be used to speed up the process of adding values. You may also use formulas to calculate one value type from another one, for example

calculating the base price from the retail price. When the Value Set is saved, the formulas will be replaced by numeric values.

4. Save your changes and exit Value Manager by clicking on Save All, then Close All.

Note Do NOT use the Excel Save functionality!

Page 68: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

After you have created a Value Set, it is recommended that you test it with some real data,

especially if the values are defined by Rules.

Amending multiple Value Sets

You can amend more than one Value Set at once, by selecting them and clicking on Edit:

Value Sets are amended as described above. In addition, data can be copied from one Value

Set to any other(s):

Single values can be copied using Copy and Paste.

Rules can be copied by selecting them and clicking on Copy Rule (to select the

destination Value Sets).

Currency Manager

Go to the JATO menu/ribbon bar and click on Currency / then Currency Manager:

Module 12 – Basic Value Analysis (Full)

Full Value Analysis creates a more detailed worksheet that allows you to see how the value of

each item of equipment affects the overall value of each vehicle, and optionally compares each vehicle to a Benchmark.

Note An important factor in Value Analysis is the items that are included in the

comparison. To make the analysis constant, reproducible and comparable over time, it is recommended that you define and save a Query that contains all these

items.

1. Select the “with Incentives” subject group, if available.

Note You have to be licensed to see this data.

2. Create a new Workbook containing a few competitive vehicles, together with some items

to be compared (and at least one option), by either:

using Query by Conditions to create a Query that contains the vehicles and items, or

using Choose by Make Model to select the vehicles and then running a Query to select the items.

Note Ensure that there are values in the Value Set for the items in the worksheet.

3. Save the Query as “value analysis”.

4. Select a Benchmark.

5. Select the Value Analysis (Full) procedure:

6. Select your Value Set, all the Report Summaries and click on OK.

65

Value Analysis (Full) creates a new worksheet which displays the value (according to the Value

Set) of each vehicle’s Standard equipment, compares the values with those of the Benchmark and makes the adjustments accordingly:

7. Save the Workbook as “German Value Analysis”.

When an item is Standard on the Benchmark and the competitor offers no suitable option,

Value Analysis will add the value, from the Value Set, of the item to the price of the competitor.

Note The adjustment is shown in a yellow column behind the vehicle.

When an item is Not Available on the Benchmark, but Standard on the competitor, the value from the Value Set will be deducted from the price of the competitor vehicle.

The price of the Benchmark doesn’t change during Value Analysis; the adjustments take place on the competitor vehicles only.

At the bottom of the worksheet you’ll find the Summary Lines, which show the result of the analysis. The result is divided in two sections.

The first section is Before Value Analysis where the vehicles are compared on the basis of their list price, (unless a different price has been chosen in the Query).

The second section is After Value Analysis where the vehicles, adjusted to be equally equipped,

are compared on the basis of their price once the Value Set values have been applied.

Note The figures in the Summary Lines are produced from formulas rather than

being values. This means that you can change the values produced by the Value Analysis in the worksheet and the adjustments and index figures will be

recalculated without having to rerun the procedure.

User Defined Items

Note Ensure the worksheet is in vertical mode.

You can create new Items to include in Value Analysis by clicking on Edit:

Select User default value if no value present to use the default values you entered in the User Data sheet in the value column for each vehicle, otherwise the values will be blank.

If both of these boxes are selected, the Full Value Analysis worksheet will display the above User Defined Items as follows:

You can now edit this worksheet to supply the correct setting and value for each vehicle if

required. When you change the value, the adjustments will be recalculated for you automatically. There is no link in the worksheet between the settings and the values, so

changing std to blank does not automatically change the value. However, deleting or changing the value does automatically change the adjustments.

Note JATO V4 does not overwrite any settings or values that you have changed in

the Full Value Analysis sheet.

Removing User Defined Items

To remove any user defined items, run Full Value Analysis with Use Items defined in the

worksheet 'User Data' unchecked, or delete the User Data worksheet.

Module 13 – Value Analysis (Full) with Built options

1. Manually build some options.

Note If the options can’t be built, re-run the query with Options/Incentives and

Build support checked, then re-select the Benchmark.

2. Select Value Analysis (Full).

3. Click on OK.

Value Analysis (Full) creates a new worksheet which displays the value (according to the Value

Set) of each vehicle’s Standard or Built equipment, compares the values with those of the

Benchmark and makes the adjustments accordingly:

When an item is Standard on the Benchmark and an option has been Built onto a competitor, Value Analysis treats the built option as Standard and makes no further adjustment from the

Value Set because the option price has already been added to the vehicle price during the Build process.

When an item is Standard on the Benchmark and the competitor offers no suitable option (or it hasn’t been Built), Value Analysis will add the value, from the Value Set, of the item to the

price of the competitor.

Note The adjustment is shown in a yellow column behind the vehicle.

Page 75: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

69

When an item is Not Available or Optional on the Benchmark, but Standard on the competitor,

the value from the Value Set will be deducted from the price of the competitor vehicle.

The price of the Benchmark doesn’t change during Value Analysis; the adjustments take place

on the competitor vehicles only.

Note The only exception to this rule is when the user decides to Build options onto

the Benchmark.

At the bottom of the worksheet you’ll find the Summary Lines, which show the result of the analysis. The result is divided in two or three sections, depending whether options have been

built or not.

The first section is Before Value Analysis where the vehicles are compared on the basis of their

list price, (unless a different price has been chosen in the Query).

The second section is After Build where the vehicles are compared on the basis of their Built

price.

The third section is After Value Analysis where the vehicles, adjusted to be equally equipped, are compared on the basis of their price once the Value Set values have been applied.

Note The figures in the Summary Lines are produced from formulas rather than being values. This means that you can change the values produced by the Value

Analysis in the worksheet and the adjustments and index figures will be

recalculated without having to rerun the procedure.

Module 14 – Value Analysis (Full) with Volumes Weighting

1. Apply Volumes Weighting to the Workbook, (see page 36).

Note An extra line, containing this data, will appear at the bottom of the

worksheet.

Value Analysis (Full) creates the same worksheet as before, but this time taking the vehicle’s

Volumes into account:

The worksheet reads as before, except that the Compare to average and Excluding

Benchmark figures are now weighted by the selected Volumes figure.

2. Save the Workbook.

Module 15 – Value Analysis (Full) with Incentives

Note You need to have access to a “with Incentives” Subject Group to see

Incentives data. If you don’t, move to Module 16.

1. Re-open the Query: in Incentive, select JATO value per unit sold and with Options/Incentives and Build support still checked, click on OK.

2. Re-select the Benchmark and re-build the options as before.

3. Select Value Analysis (Full):

4. Select Include Incentives and click on OK.

Value Analysis (Full) creates the same worksheet as before, but this time adds Incentives analysis lines (calculated in the same way as the Value analysis lines):

Note Incentives data cannot be changed in the worksheet, so the adjustments and

index figures are set.

Page 78: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

Note The “… Excluding Analysis” sections can be hidden by using Excel outlining.

Public (customer) Incentives and Dealer Incentives are compared on the basis of their price.

The extra sections reveal pure customer and Dealer Incentives analysis without the influence

of other factors, such as Automatic Build or Volumes Weighting.

Incentive Report

Incentive Report is useful when you have to create a spreadsheet that shows all the Incentives

that apply to a vehicle(s) and which can be printed. It will only show Incentives data.

Page 79: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

73

There are two variations of this procedure:

Incentive Report (All incentives) creates a list of all the Incentives of the vehicles in the worksheet,

Incentive Report (Worksheet incentives only) creates the same list, but it shows only the Incentives selected in the worksheet.

5. Select Incentive Report (Worksheet incentives only):

Incentive Report creates a new worksheet with all the vehicles in the worksheet displayed one

after the other (their optional items beneath them):

Module 16 – Other Value Analysis procedures

Note The following examples contain Incentives data. You will only see this if you

are working with a “with Incentives” Subject Group.

Value Analysis (Summary)

Value Analysis (Summary) is a more compact presentation the Value Analysis (Full) worksheet.

You can run Value Analysis (Summary) instead of Value Analysis (Full).

1. Re-open the German Value Analysis workbook.

2. Select Value Analysis (Summary):

3. Click on OK.

Value Analysis (Summary) creates a new worksheet which summaries the results of the Value

Analysis:

Page 82: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

76

Note The Analysis Lines below the summary section are the same as those in the Value Analysis (Full) worksheet. They are produced from formulas that count the

number of letters indicating the presence of a feature and add any numeric values. This allows you to change the equipment levels by editing the sheet (except

Incentives data).

The data in the Value Analysis (Summary) worksheet is identical to that in Value Analysis (Full) worksheet, but the top section is more compact because it shows only those items that have a

value assigned in the Value Set and that are Standard on at least one of the vehicles. The analysis is displayed in two sections: non-numeric and numeric features.

The second column shows the values for each item according to the Value Set.

Each feature which is fitted as standard is labelled with the letter “s” and if the feature is fitted

to more than one location, (on the driver and passenger sides, for example), the letter “s” is

repeated. Built items are labelled “b”. The option price is not displayed but correctly added. A blank cell means that the item is Not Standard or no suitable option has been built.

For numeric items like HP, the total value of the item is shown and the adjustment is made accordingly.

Price Chart

Price Chart is a visual presentation of the Value Analysis (Full) worksheet.

Note If you had selected the Incentives Output Options in Step 5, you would see a

third chart based on the Incentives data.

Advantage/Disadvantage Report

Advantage/Disadvantage Report is a more compact presentation the Value Analysis (Full)

worksheet. It highlights the advantages, disadvantages and common features of the vehicles.

This makes it easy to see where the Benchmark’s equipment exceeds the competitors’ and where it falls short.

1. Select Advantage/Disadvantage Report.

Advantage/Disadvantage Report creates a new worksheet with the advantages, disadvantages

and common features of the competitor vehicle and Benchmark displayed in three sections:

Page 86: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

Note The yellow column and Summary Lines are the same as those described

above in the Value Analysis (Full) section.

Value Analysis (Full Summarized)

Value Analysis (Full Summarised) is the most compact presentation the Value Analysis (Full) worksheet. It divides the analysis into two sections: specifications and engine items.

Note The format of the Report/Chart produced can be amended within the

procedure.

2. Select Value Analysis (Full Summarised):

Page 87: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

82

The Report has four Excel Outline levels:

Level 1 shows only the index lines,

Level 2 adds the engine adjustment,

Level 3, shows only items where an adjustment has taken place, (as in the example

above),

Level 4 shows all items selected in the Query.

Note The format for negative adjustments, built options and discounts can be

changed in the Value Analysis (Full Summarised) Options dialog box.

The Chart displays the Price Index of the vehicles before and after Value Analysis.

Page 89: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

Note If you change anything in the Workbook you will have to rerun all the

procedures to reflect the changes.

Value Analysis Bubble Chart

Value Analysis Bubble Chart allows you to create a Chart which shows the relative positions of vehicles that have undergone Value Analysis. It can also display their volumes in the form of a

circle, (the higher the volume, the larger the circle). This allows you to compare visually the volumes of the vehicles.

4. Select Value Analysis Bubble Chart:

Page 90: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

84

5. Select all the vehicles, then click on OK.

Value Analysis Bubble Chart creates a new worksheet with the vehicles displayed in a graph:

Note To see specific price information, run the mouse over the symbol, coloured

line or within the bubble.

Concise Display

Concise Display allows you to display the data in a worksheet in a concise form. If Full Value

Analysis has been run, the Concise Display procedure creates a concise copy of this worksheet as well.

6. Select Concise Display:

Page 91: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

7. Select the Move options to row Options, then click on OK

Note See the JATO V4 Procedures Supplement or the JATO V4 on-line help file to

see all the layout types.

Concise Display creates a new worksheet with the data displayed in the format selected in the

dialog box:

8. Close and save the Workbook.

Specifications Matrix

Specifications Matrix is another form of Value Analysis. It creates a matrix which compares

vehicles horizontally and vertically. The horizontal comparison is by Model and the vertical one by vehicles within a Model. This provides information on the price positioning of your own

model within a line-up of the competitor models and each vehicle within your model.

Note The main difference between this procedure and the other Value Analysis

procedures we have seen so far, is that there is no single Benchmark as there are

always two vehicles being compared to each other.

1. Re-open the “value analysis” Query:

remove the condition from Unique Identity,

set a condition on Model of the models used in the German Value Analysis Workbook,

Page 92: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

do not include options.

click on OK to run the Query.

2. Select Specifications Matrix:

3. Select the top Benchmark Mode and both Outputs, then click on Next:

4. To select the vehicles which will be compared in the Report:

select a Model,

select a Level,

select a Vehicle from the drop-down list,

repeat this process for each Model and every Level.

5. Select the same Value Set as used in Value Analysis (Full).

6. Click on Finish.

Specifications Matrix creates a new worksheet which shows the Value Analysis of a pair of vehicles (vertically by Level and horizontally by Model) in a box between them:

Page 93: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

87

Note A Specifications Matrix can be very large, depending on the number of

Models and Levels chosen.

In the first dialog box, you selected to make the first vehicle in the row/column the

Benchmark. So in these examples, the Volvo and Luxury Specification will always be the Benchmark.

This is a vertical comparison from the above example. It compares two levels of a single Model:

and this is a horizontal comparison. It compares two Models at the Luxury Specifications level:

Specifications Matrix also creates a new worksheet (Summary Matrix) which shows the same information as the Report matrix, but the Value Analysis boxes are reduced to show the total

Adjustment only. For the horizontal comparison example shown above, the Summary section looks like this:

7. Close and save the Workbook as “German Specs Matrix”.

Module 17 – Segmentation

Segment types

Specifications databases have two types of segments: Runtime and Premark.

Every vehicle also belongs to one pre-defined JATO Global and Regional segment.

Runtime segment

Runtime segments are simply sets of conditions. This allows you to set a condition on the segment in a Query, but not to select it.

Note A vehicle can belong to several Runtime segments. For example, you can include a large imported 5-door wagon in several different segments such as 5-door

vehicles, large wagons and 5-door imported vehicles.

Premark segment

Premark segments are segments that store pre-calculated conditions. Each vehicle matching

the segment conditions is pre-marked. A vehicle can only belong to one Premark segment. Queries can be run using Premark segments to ensure that duplicate vehicles are not included.

Note If you have lots of Premark segments in a database which have overlapping

conditions, the order that the segments were created dictates which segment a

vehicle belongs to, see page 93.

Segment Manager

Segment Manager enables you to create your own segmentation. Each created segment will

be a runtime segment, but you can then amend its type.

1. Go to the JATO menu/ribbon bar, select Segments / and click on Segment Manager:

Note Segment Manager is empty because the worksheet is empty. If a Query had

been run, the conditions from it would be shown.

2. Click on Add:

Page 95: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

89

Note You can only define conditions in this dialog box.

You have decided that the JG Luxury segment contains more Makes than you need, so you

want make a smaller luxury segment.

3. Set a condition on Make of Audi, Bentley, Daimler, Jaguar, Mercedes and Rolls Royce and

click on OK:

7. Go to the File menu, select Save and save the segment as “Luxury”.

Note This segment can now be included in your queries.

Now you decide that you want to restrict your Runtime Segment to contain models with an engine size greater than 6 litres.

8. Click on Add.

9. Set a condition on Litres of >6.0:

Page 96: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

The Segment Manager shows the new condition below the previous one with an OR link, but you want Models with a greater than 6 litre engine.

10. Highlight the Litres condition and click on Edit:

11. Check Global Condition and click on OK:

Page 97: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

91

The Segment now has a global condition (containing both the queries joined with an AND link).

12. Save the segment.

Amending the segment type

There are two ways of amending a segment’s type. This is because a segment can be out-of-

date (no vehicles assigned to it) or up-to-date (have vehicles assigned to it). An out-of-date segment can be made up-to date when it is used in a query or when its type is changed. As

this process can take some time, users can choose when to do it:

The Choices menu allows a lot of segment types to be changed at the same time, but each

segment will be updated only when used in a query. This will cause the query to take longer to run than usual.

The Mark Segments dialog box allows segment types (and order) to be changed and

updated at the same time, so each segment will be up-to-date when used in a query.

Marking the segments will take a while, but the queries that use them will take no longer

to run than usual.

Using Choices

1. Go to the Choices menu and select Premark:

Page 98: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

92

The segment type is now displayed as Premark.

2. Save the segment.

Using Mark Segments

3. Go to the Choices menu and click on Mark Segments:

Remember that although we changed the segment type in the Choices menu, it doesn’t have

any vehicles assigned to it, so its Status is Out-of-date.

4. To amend the Status to Up-to-date, click on Execute:

5. Click on Close.

6. Save the segment.

7. Click on Close.

You can now use this segment in a Query.

8. Create a new Query:

select and set a condition on Premark segment of Luxury,

click on OK:

Page 99: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

93

This shows the vehicles in the Luxury segment.

9. Close and save the Workbook, if required.

How vehicles are assigned to premark segments

As vehicles can only belong to one Premark segment, so there is a default order in which

vehicles are assigned to them:

the oldest segment will premark all the vehicles that match its conditions.

the next oldest segment will do the same, including any vehicles that have already been premarked to the oldest premark segment.

this continues until the newest segment premarks all the vehicles in the database that match its conditions.

So when you create a Premark segment it automatically removes vehicles that match its conditions from all other Premark segments.

To create your own order, in the Mark Segments dialog box, click on Order…:

The top segment is treated as the youngest and the bottom one as the oldest.

So in this example, all the 4-door diesel BMWs in the database have been premarked to the 4-

door diesel BMWs segment. The 4-door cars segment contains all the 4-door cars in the database apart from those premarked the 4-door diesel BMWs segment. The diesel cars

segment contains all the diesel cars in the database apart from those premarked to the first or second segments.

Segment Reports

The Segment Reports display the details and conditions of all the user defined segments in the

database to which you are currently connected:

Page 100: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

Segment Report displays the segments individually.

Concise Tabulated Segment Report displays the segments as a list.

Tabulated Segment Report displays the segments as a list and optionally highlights

those conditions that segments have in common, that overlap or are unique.

Segment Report

Go to the JATO menu/ribbon bar, select Segments/ and click on Segment Report:

Check Group conditions, then click on OK:

Note You display the conditions by using the Excel outlining functions.

Tabulated Segment Report

Go to the JATO menu/ribbon bar, select Segments/ and click on Tabulated Segment Report:

Note Runtime segments do not have a Status.

Select the segment(s) for the Report(s) and click on Add. They are added to the bottom box.

The Concise Segment Report contains all the selected segments with all their conditions:

The Tabulated Segment Report contains all the selected segments with all their conditions:

All the Duplicate conditions will return the same vehicles (based on the Engine:Liters).

The Overlapping conditions will return some of the same vehicles (the “small hatchbacks” segment vehicles are contained within the other Overlap conditions).

The Unique conditions will return vehicles not returned by any of the other segments (based on Body style:Body type).

Module 18 - User Defined Vehicles

JATO V4 allows you to create your own vehicles. This allows you, for example, to plan new

model ranges or special editions. They can be saved to any Specifications database and used elsewhere in JATO V4, particularly in the Value Analysis procedures, (where they are mainly

used as the Benchmark).

Note They can be imported and exported between databases.

You can create a user defined vehicle (UDV) with any equipment you wish. This is different

from Built vehicles, which can only have existing optional equipment built onto them.

Note Any data or equipment you edit is indicated in mustard colored text in the

worksheet.

Excel 2000, to 2003

Go to the JATO menu, select Procedures and click on User Defined Vehicles:

The Vehicle Editor toolbar will now be displayed:

adds an item to the vehicle.

deletes an item from the vehicle.

edits an item on the vehicle.

allows you to remove all the edited items from the vehicle.

allows you to save the vehicle to the database.

Excel 2007 to 2013

Go to the JATO Edit ribbon bar:

in the Vehicle Editor section:

duplicates the highlighted vehicle by inserting a copy into the worksheet.

Creating a User Defined Vehicle

1. Close any open workbooks.

2. Select a Specifications database.

3. Create a Query containing a single vehicle, together with a Subject, such as Seats or Roof.

4. Check Options/Incentives and Build support boxes and click on OK.

Note It can be helpful to retain the original vehicle and to create the UDV next to

it in the worksheet, so that you can compare the differences. This is done by

duplicating the reference vehicle (including the options).

5. Select the vehicle column/row header and click on / in Vehicle Editor:

Amending Standard Equipment

It is possible to change the Standard equipment of a vehicle, for example change the colour of the Roof rails to body color.

6. Click on the attribute value you want to change and click on / in Vehicle

Editor:

Note If the item you are changing has more than one Location, for example Front

Seats, make sure you set the correct value for all of them. You can check All

Instances to apply the same value change to all the locations at once.

7. Select body color from the drop-down list and click on OK:

Note The data that you have changed is displayed in mustard until the vehicle is

committed to the database.

Deleting Standard/Optional Items

Sometimes you may want to remove existing Standard equipment/Option from a vehicle, for

example you now decide that Roof rails aren’t available on the new vehicle:

8. Click on the attribute you want to change and click on / in Vehicle Editor:

The item is now not available, (unless there were more Options available for this item and they

can be deleted in the same way).

Note All the item’s attributes are cleared as well.

Changing an Item from Not Available to Standard/Optional

You might want to add a Standard item/Option where it was not available before, for example add Convertible roof:

9. Click on the item you want to amend and click on / in Vehicle Editor:

Saving a User Defined Vehicle

There are two ways to save a UDV. You can either save it within the Workbook or commit it to

the database. To decide which option is best, the following points should be borne in mind:

A UDV committed to the database is visible to all the users authorised to connect to it, so

to keep your work confidential, you should only save it in your Workbook.

If the UDV isn’t committed to the database, it will be lost if you re-run the Query in Replace mode.

If the UDV isn’t committed to the database and the reference vehicle disappears from the database (for example the version is no longer offered) you will lose the UDV because its

base Unique Identity does not exist.

In Excel 2007 and 2010, it is possible to delete a committed UDV from a database.

Saving in a Workbook

12. Save the Workbook as “German UDV”.

Committing to the database

Module 19 - Data Updating

Databases can be automatically updated using Data Update or manually updated using Quick

Update files (together with replacing the database on a monthly basis using Database Update). This functionality allows you to keep your Workbooks up-to-date with the latest available data.

Note You can integrate new data into your existing work quickly by using Refresh

Manager (see Module 26).

JATO V4 allows two ways to update your databases:

Data Update performed automatically (at a frequency of your choice) via the Internet, (JATO

recommends that you use this method).

or:

Database Update performed manually once a monthly from a DVD.

Note This must be completed each month as Quick Update files don’t update the

databases in an efficient way and can be missing some identification data.

and Quick Updates performed manually (preferably on a daily basis) via the Internet.

Note Regularly updating your databases is essential as you need to be working

with the most current data.

Module 20 - Refreshing JATO V4 Workbooks

One of the biggest benefits of JATO V4 is that you can update existing workbooks to include

the latest data.

There are two ways to refresh old workbooks once you have updated your databases:

a single Workbook, when you open it,

multiple workbooks, using Refresh Manager.

Refreshing a single Workbook

When opening a workbook

If a JATO V4 workbook is opened and Subject Group has changed in any way, you will be

asked if you want to continue:

If you click on No the workbook will be opened as an Excel file.

Note This enables you to use Excel facilities on the workbook, but the query

associated with it will be lost and so you can no longer run procedures on it.

If you click on Yes and database used has been updated, you will be asked if you want to

update the data:

If you click on No the workbook will be opened without updating.

Note If the Subject Group was modified, it will be open as an Excel file.

If you click on Yes and any procedures have been run in the workbook, you will be asked if you want to re-run any of them:

Select the procedure(s) you want to refresh and click on OK.

The worksheet, query and selected procedure(s) will be rerun and updated. By default, any changed data will now be shaded light green and the data will be in black and italics.

Page 118: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

Manually

To force JATO V4 to refresh a workbook, select Refresh from the Excel File/Microsoft Office button menu/File ribbon bar.

Refreshing multiple workbooks

To refresh more than one Workbook at the same time, go to the JATO menu/ribbon bar and

click on Refresh Manager / then Refresh Manager:

The directory that contains all the JATO V4 workbooks is displayed on the left hand side and the workbooks it contains are displayed in the top Filename box. Select the Workbook(s) you

want to refresh and click on Add.

Use the check boxes to determine the refresh actions and click on OK.

If there were any issues you will see the Refresh Manager Summary:

Page 119: V4.4.1 TOOL KITww11.jato.com/In/MembersArea/V4/Documents/V4.5.2... · 2013-12-09 · V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT 2 Examples There are many examples in this document that you can

V4.5.2 SPECIFICATIONS TOOL KIT

113

Any cells that contain amended data are shaded light green with data in black italics:

Note The Workbook can be returned to its normal appearance by manually

refreshing it again.

Specifications Changes

Specifications Changes is a procedure that allows you to display any data changes that have occurred to the worksheet vehicles when a Workbook has been refreshed, (together with any

built or user edited data, if required).

Note This procedure is most useful after Quick Update files have been loaded or

running Database Update.

1. Refresh a Workbook.

2. Select Specifications Changes:

for all countries).

For example, SSCGB is the Specifications data for Great Britain and VEU is the Volumes data

for the whole of Europe.

The database type letters are:

A (Specifications): full specifications for commercials, including prices and standard/optional

equipment. This data allows you to compare vehicles, monitor markets, plan new Models and carry out Value Analysis. Some Countries also have Incentives data.

H (Historical): historical data for cars (can also include Incentives data).

M (Model Mix): enhanced and improved Volumes databases that provide complete sales and

registrations data at version level together with the Price that was valid on the month that the vehicle was sold or registered. Apart from tracking results and trends, this data allows

you to generate price banding and weighted price analysis.

N (Specifications): combined specifications data for cars and commercials. This data allows you to compare vehicles, monitor markets, plan new Models and carry out Value Analysis.

O (Historical): historical data for commercials (can also include Incentives data).

S (Specifications): full specifications for cars, including prices and standard/optional

equipment. This data allows you to compare vehicles, monitor markets, plan new Models and carry out Value Analysis. Some Countries also have Incentives data.

V (Volumes): the volumes of vehicles sold or registered, together with enough specifications data to identify them at least on Make and Model level. This data are used for track the

results, trends and find niche markets.
