CONFESSIONSaudition do’s and don’ts

of a casting directorA Casting Director is the middleman between the agency/actor and the director. Essentially, the goal of the CDis to employ people who will fit the director’s (and possibly the producer’s) artistic ambitions. Oshi Williamsinterviews an anonymous casting director, giving us the inside scoop: What will book you the job? What willturn them off? Read on to find out...

OSHI: What is the craziest thing that an actor has ever done during an audition?CASTING DIRECTOR: One of the actors pulled out a gun during an audition for a gangster role. The director actually hired the guy on the spot! (TheBiz does not recommend this at all. It’s bad! It could get you arrested.)

OSHI: What is the stupidest thing that a person has ever done during an audition? CD: I once helped get two friends cast in a film. They both auditioned for the main character, when one of the women did not get the lead role and her friend did, she accepted the lesser role, then never showed up to the set.Horrible. It made me look bad.

OSHI: Describe a great casting call.CD: A good turn out of the people who fit what the clients are actually looking for. For instance, when they are looking for a young white kid and theagencies send older black women, it’s a waste of time and money. When theyfind the people that they can actually use, it is time and money well spent.

OSHI: What is the one thing that a person could do during an

audition to immediately disqualify him or her from getting the part?CD: Other than pull out a gun? (he laughs)… two things: talk about money, and be a pest. Never pester the director or the producers, anddon’t demand money... leave the money talk to your agent, and beagreeable, unless you feel uncomfortable with something. Then youcan speak to the director. Don’t demand anything or be difficult orannoying. Remember that everyone is replaceable in this business.

OSHI: Give me three do’s that every actor should adhere to dur-ing a casting call.

DO:LEARN THE LINES. Take a few minutes alone to go over thesides, and memorize them as best you can. Then jump into thecharacter.

ASK QUESTIONS about the film or commercial that you’re audi-tioning for. But keep your questions light and simple.

DRESS THE PART

DON’T:DISROBE. If there is nudity, they’ll tell you ahead oftime and you shouldn’t be expected to take yourclothes off at an audition, especially the first call.

OVERSELL YOURSELF VERBALLY.Unless you were in a film with TomCruise that released last week, wedon’t care. We don’t want to hear aboutthe role you had in Joe Shmo’s inde-pendent feature or the 5 thousandplays you did. We don’t care whoyou are unless you are a householdname.

DIVULGE YOUR SEXUALITY.

Okay, now you have some tips, straight from the source...good luckon your next audition!

Remember...In Process...Remember that everyoneyou meet today is stilllearning, growing andexpanding. Rememberthat you are still learn-ing, growing andexpanding. We are neverdone. We will never get itall nor will we ever get itall right. Life is a contin-uous process of growth, discovery and expan-sion. Ease up on yourselfand others. You don’thave to get it all right, and you don’t have toget it all done. Embracethe idea that you areperpetually “in process,”and you will begin tolighten up, relax andenjoy the ride

‘The Daily Dose’

Dear Safiyah, I’m a 28 year old actress who has beenfocused on my career for so long, that I haveno idea how to date. I’m ready to findsomeone, but this process is going to befrustrating. I don't think I can do it.Signed, Scared in Secaucus

Dear Scared in Secaucus,Change is always difficult. Try this: makethe commitment to give the person you’redating a fair chance. Don’t talk yourselfout of it before you begin, It's only frus-

trating if you make it that way, so relax. The key is to take yourtime and to not be afraid to take a chance for your love life.Sometimes we confuse our fears with our capabilities. Trust me, youcan do it. Go ahead and take a leap of faith. After all, what's theworst that could happen?

When considering an acting career, you have torealize that there will be ups and downs, and youhave to stay positive and open to what the universe

brings you. You also have to keep your determination and will to succeed. When youfeel like giving up, don’t! Stick with it, make the right moves, and eventually you willmake it to where you need to be. Throughout this whole process, study. Take actingclasses that pertain to the kind of acting you will be doing. Learning never stops.

Step 1: HEADSHOTSYou must have a great headshot that not only looks like you, but expresses your per-sonality. Think about what you want to portray, be it smiling, serious, character shotsor glamorous. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on professional pictures, justmake sure they are recent, clear and well cropped.

Step 2: GET AN AGENTTo find an agency to suit you, look online at commercial, theatrical, legit agencies.Find the best 5-10 that suit you. Contact the agencies and ask them what their poli-cies are to join the agency. Some accept email submissions only, some allow drop-ins and some have open calls. Each agency is different. Then follow through. Manytimes this is the difference between the actor who is signed and the one who is not.Follow-Through! Be honest about the type of agency you are looking for, and alwaysbe punctual and professional when dealing with them.

Step 3: AUDITIONNow that you’ve land the agent, you’re on your way. Now its time for you to show utilize your skills to do what you love. Once you have an agent sending you out, it’sup to you to get the part. Before your audition, be sure to memorize your sides, goover them again and again, and try different things. The day of, dress the part. At theaudition, take some time to relax, breath and prepare yourself mentally. Be friendlyand personable to the casting director, and don’t apologize if you mess up, impro-vise.

Step 4: GET THE GIGYou’ve landed the job, congratulations. Always show up 15 minutes early. Be kind, personable, professional and easy to work with. In this business, word travels fast, solet all news about you be good news. m.b.

modelEvaluate yourselfFirst evaluate yourself to determine the path of your modeling career. For example, how tallare you? What are your measurements? You may opt to pursue commercial print modeling. These are the models that appear in products shots, catalogs, magazine ads and other adver-tisements. Height is not an issue because you are not modeling clothing. It does require thatyou have measurements to suit your height and an attractive face and are in shape. If you aretall, you may do fashion and editorial modeling. This includes runway work and high fash-ion print ads. There are also other types of modeling, if you are interested, explore youroptions thoroughly.Take professional picturesWhile some agencies accept snapshots, it’s always best to show up with professional model-ing pictures. Find a photographer who specializes in modeling shoots. You can use resourcessuch as TheBiz or the Internet to find photographers that suit your needs.Find an agencyLook for agencies in your area either by searching online or in resource books. Call them andask what their policy is for seeing people. When you meet with them, gauge their profession-alism, ask who some of their current clients are and what model types they represent. Afterall, once you join an agency, they are working for you and your best interests. If they ask youto sign a contract, look over it very carefully and consider showing it to an attorney beforesigning. If it is exclusive, this means you have to be with this agency only, so make sure thatit is a good agency that will keep you working. m.b.

This dramatic beauty goes for the gusto in vibrant lipcolor. Rihanna is wearing bright, vivid lipstick that bringsinstant attention to the mouth. This hue by Shu Uemura,Rouge Unlimited, is a creamy, rich textured, highly pig-mented lipstick with ultra-smooth application. It alsopromises to last for 8 hours with vivid color and tremen-dous moisture. To apply, load up your lip brush with thelipstick. Don't worry about keeping the stick intact.Lipstick applied directly from the tube will never stay onall day. Don’t be shy, lay the color down richly on thelips and go right along the lip line.

Angelina Jolie-Pitt is famous for her talent, humanitarianismand beauty. And on any given day, she has dramatic liq-uid-liner drenched eyes. To apply liquid eyeliner like hers, restyour pinkie on your cheek. Try working in two steps: First startat the center of the eye and draw a line from the center tothe outer corner. Then, go back to the inside corner of theeye and connect that line to the center. This will help keepthe eyeliner close to the lashes. You can continue the out-side line upward slightly to give lift to your eye. Make the lineas thin or wide as you like. Try Almay Liquid Liner, or for a dramatic look.

WORK OUTHere in New York we're already ahead of the game; we walk every-where. That's actually number one in my list of tips for staying fit. This activity alone drops the laziness factor to a minimum. Insteadof taking a cab or the train, walk wherever you can.

EAT RIGHTEating right should already be a basic thought in your head. I don'trecommend crash dieting or extreme sudden changes. Drastic shifts inyour diet are difficult to maintain, you run the risk of going back toyour old eating habits. Instead you may want to try the replacementmethod. Substitute whites (rice, bread, etc) with browns (brown riceand whole wheat bread). Eat less. If you're not hungry, don't eat.

Don't use eating as a habit because it's a mealtime or because you'rebored. Eat for the right reasons, to nourish your body. Notice whatyou are putting into your body and think about it before you do it.

INNER STRENGTHIn such a crazy, busy city, we need to make sure we make time to relaxand take in the happenings of the day. One great way to do that isthrough meditation. Meditation is a devotional exercise of or leadingto contemplation. It has been said that meditation is the path to allreal knowledge. If you want to further your knowledge and depth asa person, meditation is wonderful way to propel your intentions. Theact is to reflect deeply on a subject, not allowing distraction. Methodsare endless. If you're interested, I suggest you go to a bookstore andget a book on beginning meditation methods.

The goal is to be strong, healthy, positive contributors to this society. In order to do this effectively, we must be of sound mind and body.Take care of yourself. And remember, your inside is equally importantas the outside. What is inside of you shines through, it is your spirit. So nourish your mind, your body and your soul. m.b.

Swimwear casting in 24 hrs…3 NO-NO’s

Excess weight is not composed of just fat. All weight gain has three components: fat, leanweight and water. If you lead a healthy lifestyle of exercise and a balanced diet, some weight gainwill consist of water. Water gain is often the result of increased daily sodium intake. If your sodi-

um consumption exceeds an amount the body can handle, the build-up causes the body to hold extrafluids in the blood and around the cells. This process is known as water retention. So be aware - daily sodi-

um intake is generally high inthe American diet!

Alcohol can be a majorsource of calories. Oneglass of wine contains

about 120 calories (andas many as 150 calories for alarger glass). If you drink two tothree glasses of wine everyevening, you may be consuming300 to 450 extra calories perday. This can result in a poundof weight gain every one or twoweeks!

Also, alcohol may increase yourappetite, causing you to eatmore than normal at dinner. Asa result, your caloric intake maybe from eating, in addition tothe two to three glasses of winethat you may already be drink-ing. Stick to one glass of wineand substitute water for the sec-ond glass. Or avoid alcohol alto-gether on a daily basis. Permityourself a glass or two on week-ends only.

Research shows alink between stress

and weight. Stress oftencauses people to drop good eat-ing and exercise habits thathelped them lose weight. Whenpeople are stressed they can alsohave trouble falling asleep.Studies show that a lack of sleep leads to lower levels of the hormone leptin, which can cause an increasedappetite. Tired people often turn to food, too, to replenish their energy. So just take in a deep breathe, release, and relax whenever possible!

RELATIONSHIPS

elieve me, relationships can be a challenge. Communication, compro-mise and patience are key in making a relationship flourish. But for actors, models, makeup artists, wardrobe stylists, celebrity hair stylists, directors, producers, entertainers, and everyone else in this industry...you can multi-ply the challenge by ten. This is why people in the industry tend to minglewith other industry folk. It's more difficult for a person with a “9-5” to under-

stand his or her mate jetting across the country for two weeks or a month at a time, last minute. Do not get discouraged though, it is possible. The number one key is trust.A person can be a garbage man, a stockbroker or congressmen; if he or she wantsto step outside of the relationship, he or she will. If you trust your mate (because he orshe has earned your trust) this is half the battle.

The next key factor is equally important: communication. If you are not happy withyour current lifestyle or you feel neglected, talk about it. Let your partner know howimportant it is when they send you that text or make a quick call to say hello. On theother hand, do not become a nag. Understand that the entertainment world is usual-ly hectic and busy. Offer ease and positivity to this person and he or she will appreci-ate you more for it. m.b.

If you're single, busy and on the search for amate, this may be the right venture foryou...Speed dating. It's a fast, exciting way tomeet other single people. You might not findyour soulmate on the first round, but you mayfind someone worth getting to know. If nothingelse, you can work on your flirting skills withhardly any risk. Here's how it works: You haveup to 15 mini speed dates during the night, each one lasting about 4-5 minutes. After eachdate, you will circle yes or no on your scorecardto indicate your continued interest or lackthereof. At the end of the evening you will turnin your scorecard for them to tally. The nextmorning you receive an email with the contactinformation for your mutual matches. Formore information log ontowww.WeekendDating.com... Happy Dating!! m.b.

I’ve always advised people to avoid dating at the job. So, Iwas less than impressed with myself when I ended up fallingin love with my very own costar.

From the minute he showed up on set, I knew he would bemine. We started rehearsing together and the chemistrywas amazing! On and off-screen. There I was, all grown upyet feeling like a teenager with stupid butterflies in my stom-ach when we shot our scene that ended in our first kiss. Itseemed like so much more than a scene from a movie, more like a chapter from the book of the rest of my life.

We got closer as the days went on. We kept our off-screenromance a secret, but people undeniably started to notice. There was an awkwardness in continuing to work togetherwhile trying to keep our relationship under wraps. When wefinally showed up together at an event in the city, othermembers of the cast and crew happened to be there andall of a sudden, the cat was out of the bag! Oh well! Whatwe had was passionate and unforgettable. He made show-ing up to the set everyday so much more enjoyable. Ourrelationship was very intense and lasted for two and a halfyears after the wrap party. Though this is nowhere near thetime of the Brangelina saga, it was absolutely amazing whileit lasted.

Sometimes this is what happens: you work with someonewho you have an undeniable connection with, and sparksfly! If it seems like a mutually beneficial situation, go for it. Butbeware of letting your guard down while on the set, because you may be writing the next article about falling inlove with your costar.

The Cinematographer, also known as the Directorof Photography, is the head of the camera depart-ment. They are in charge of all camera operators, camera assistants and the lighting crew. Their jobis to capture the photographic impression of thedirectors' vision. The director gives his/her visionof a particular shot to the DP, who then translatesthat idea into an image the camera can capturewithin the frame. The DP gets a "shot-list" fromthe director and then analyzes how each sceneshould be lit, what filters and lenses to use, andthe positioning of the camera.

Qasim basir writes:

I could sit here all day writing down the reasons why I support BarackObama. In my lifetime, I don't remember another person who has beenmore influential. He is intelligent, logical, strong, honest, dedicated, hon-orable, passionate and, most of all, inspirational. He has inspired me, ausually self-motivated individual, to try to be a better person overall. Isometimes find myself in situations where I have a choice do my best orjust get by. And something in me refers back to something Obama mayhave said about making this country better. Then I realize that if I can dobetter in all of my endeavors and we all do the same as a collective nation, this place can actually get better. How basic does that seem? Well, that'show Obama makes things: basic, logical and attainable. And this is fact,he is the only one right now who can take this country in a fundamental-ly new, positive direction.

As a filmmaker, I wanted to do something to support this man that I trulyadmired. So I stayed awake one night and drafted up some ideas for ashort film series. This series would capture the quality that I most appre-ciated about Barack Obama, The Inspiration of Barack: "Yes We Can"Film Series.

I took the series on a tour to several different cities while Obama wasmaking his run for the White House. The “Yes We Can Tour” was creat-ed to encourage people to get involved with the movement and remindpeople of the importance of doing their part. I don’t know exactly howmany people my team and I affected, but I do know Obama is now ourPresident. And the formula he used to come to power is the same onethat we will have to use to pull this country together. Hard work, sacri-fice and most of all, hope.

As an actor you must loseyourself to the world ofyour character for honestresults. Research and thepractice of certain"methods" help the actorpolish his or her craft.Heath Ledger was anadmirable embodimentof the acting craft at it'sbest.

His 1999 debut in "10Things I Hate About You"quickly put him on themap. Heath was versatileenough to avoid theteenybopper stereotype. He accepted challeng-ing projects that offeredthe sort of character workworthy enough to gainattention for 33 nomina-tions and 17 wins.Including The GoldenGlobe for his highly antic-ipated interpretation ofthe Joker in "The Dark Night."

In the 2008 summer blockbuster, Heath took on a role so intense, many speculate this it mayhave been the task that sent him over the edge. Dark Night costar, Maggie Gyllenhaal isquoted, "what he does in the movie is very unusual even for the most incredible actors. Hehad that thing happen where you hit that stride, and you are absolutely free, you can dono wrong."

Admired by colleagues and fans alike, his most memorable nomination came in 2005when the Academy recognized his controversial portrayal of a gay cowboy in BrokebackMountain. The role solidified his presence as a Hollywood heavyweight.

A healthy approach to your craft sustains longevity and fun in your career. But pleaseremember to pace yourself and step outside of character long enough to remember whoyou are.

“”Clean water: an element that runs freely through our faucets, showers, and even toi-

lets. Most individuals are unaware of how fortunate we are for such accessibility. Inother countries it's custom to walk miles at a time to retrieve contaminated water;the same water source shared with animals. Such conditions cause illness and createenvironments to harbor disease. Many of these diseases could have been avoidedwith a clean water supply. Throughout the world this is simply a factor of life.

In 2006, Drop In the Bucket, a non-profit organization, was created to provide waterwells throughout Africa. It started with a few good samaritans from Los Angeles whothought they could make a difference. On their first trip to Africa, they came face toface with children, sick, from drinking disease-infested water. They immediatelybegan work on their first two wells. Drop in the bucket is proud to spend the bareminimum on operating costs. Workers pay for their own travel accommodations andreceive no compensation for their time.

In a world littered with suffering, Drop in the Bucket offers an immediate and attain-able solution for those looking to make a change for the better. You can even namea well after yourself or your organization and leave your mark. What better gift togive, than the gift of life. For more information, visit www.dropinthebucket.org
