THE OF AFRICA VOICE 1 Copyright 2015 TATA | All rights reserved Message from the MD This is a dramatic time across the world, with news headlines in recent weeks including the apparently unstoppable rise of ISIS in the Middle East, the sensational leak of spy cables from South Africa’s state security agency, devastating floods in Mozambique and Malawi, and an eleventh-hour bailout of Greece – again. Meanwhile, the plunging international oil price has brought welcome relief to many consumers, but it has presented a double-edged sword for African oil and gas producers, which often face higher costs in extracting technically difficult reserves in remote locations. South Africa’s power woes continue, with load shedding (a weekly reality in Gauteng), the country’s economic heartland, which has severe implications for some of our neighbours who have traditionally relied on the country for power. As if this wasn’t bad enough, Southern Africa as a region is likely to record a maize shortfall of between seven and eight million tons following a severe drought. There is, however, some good news. In 2014, more companies than ever before sought to raise capital in African financial markets, an indication of the ever-maturing state of the continent’s bourses, while also showing that investor sentiment remains strong. At Tata, we believe that business is a force for good in every economy, and we’re determined to reach greater heights than ever this year as we continue to build a good news story in this economy. As the MD for the Tata International Limited’s Distribution vertical over the past two years, my team and I were tasked with transforming the organisation while ensuring that business continuity is not compromised and promises are delivered on. The business has been verticalised and we have implemented some key processes and policies that will help the vertical to realise its vision of becoming a global Top 25 distribution business by 2025. In my other hat, as the geography head for the Group, we have endeavoured to build the Tata Africa story and enhance the brand as well as showcase its might on the continent. It is a journey that requires a dedicated team and our businesses working together in unison, in order to leverage the rich history that the Tatas around the world enjoy today. It is work in progress and not far in the future, as Tatas in Africa, we will have contributed

significantly in supporting the Group to realise its vision to become among the 25 most admired corporate brands globally.

Sadly, however, this is my last message as MD and Geography Head, for the Voice of Africa. Though I have enjoyed every step of this journey, it is time now for me to focus on other activities. I am glad I was part of the Tata family, and I know that there are great things in store for this company.

Thank you, and keep moving.

This much needed facility is to offer the opportunity to both existing and prospective customers within the Ashanti/Northern Regions of Ghana to access our quality services, spare parts replacement as well as making available the Tata brand of vehicles within the sector.

In addition to the official opening of the facility, four Tata products namely, the Manza, Aria, Xenon and Ace, were also launched. A promotional discount was offered by MAS, at the launch, on the purchase of new vehicles. This promotion will run up till March 2015.

Over the years, the Tata brand has done well and the new partnership with MAS is geared to deliver on continued excellent customer services and product offering. The sentiment echoed by the vice-King was that the Tata cars and trucks offered true value for money to our customers.

He was also pleased that having the dealership set up in the Northern Sector would create more employment and opportunity for the youth.

Mr. Vivek Saraswat - GM Tata Ghana and Mr. Amine Kabbara - GM MAS, thanked the management of Tata for the support given to the dealership and Akyempemhene for his commitment to the brand.

Corporate Social ResponsibilityTata supports Operation Smile

The Tata group, through Tata Africa, has donated R100 000 to Operation Smile South Africa, an organisation which provides free surgeries to repair cleft lips, cleft palates, and other facial deformities. The donation will be used to offset the costs of surgery and provide education and training.

“Tata is honoured to be able to support the work of Operation Smile, which continues to change the lives of so many children in the most profound way,” said Thami Mbele, MD of Tata in Africa.

Since 2006, more than 4 000 children have benefited from Operation Smile South Africa’s work.

As a result of Tata’s support, at least 18 children will be able to benefit from surgery at no cost to their families.

“Tata has supported Operation Smile in India for over five years and it is wonderful to see this relationship grow into the Southern African region and develop into a global partner-ship,” said Operation Smile South Africa Regional Director, Tamlin Abrahams.

In South Africa, Tata’s community initiatives focus on three areas: education and skills development, entrepreneurship and health. The group supports educational initiatives that empower beneficiaries, enable sustainable livelihoods and provide them with the possibili-ty of becoming leaders across industries and in the government.

The donation was handed over to Operation Smile during a ceremony in Cape Town, hosted by Taj Cape Town, part of the Tata group.

Human ConnectionWays to deal with stress

As many of our Tata companies are drawing close to the end of the financial year, we know that this could be a very stressful time of the year. So we thought that in preparation for this time, we should share five effective ways to deal with stress that you can implement and incorporate in your routine with minor changes, which in return can bring a major change in your lives.

Stress is perhaps one of the most unavoidable events we all encounter in our regular setup lifestyles. It comes to us in various differing packages. However, it’s nothing but the response made by our body and mind to adjust to pressure or ‘stressors’ in our day-to-day lives. We face stress most commonly when there is an imbalance between our individual capabilities and the varying demands of our personal lives! Therefore, it is of significant importance that we learn the ways to deal with stress effectively since it is directly related to our health.

Page 19: V OICE A A AA - Tata International · PDF fileT T V OICE A A AA opyright 1 TATA All rights ... Tata Africa story and enhance the brand as well as showcase its might ... four Tata products

You can only deal with stress effectively when you have learned to identify and segregate your stress factors or ‘stressors’ as they are generally termed. Once you have attained this, half your work is done:

1) First, set for yourself realistic attainable goals both at home and at work. Do not strive to be Superman/ Superwoman! Work at resolving conflicts with people you interact with and do not get worked up with things beyond your control.

2) Managing time - learn to set clear boundaries for the day; reducing tension means getting some of the work done. Start by sorting out your diary and placing the most important items that you have to start with at the top. When you are done with the task, make it a point to tick it off the list to help you see how far your work progress is.

3) Learn and practice to balance work with play, if your work and personal need escalates, ask for help from family, friends, or professionals.

4) Relaxing - making sure you are getting enough sleep and eating well-balanced meals is equally important for your body to cope with stress.

5) Eliminate interruption - most of us during the financial period, we find ourselves bombarded with phone calls, emails, back-to-back meetings, urgent deadlines that are conspiring to make today’s workers more distracted than ever. While you may not have control over the interruptions you may have control over the response.

Try to change your perspective of life to look at changes as a positive challenge, and not a threat. Mentally, gear yourself to the best of your capability for events you anticipate could be stressful. Try to develop a non-work hobby by taking a break, with perhaps a change of environment which could be exactly what you need. Give in sometimes, talk to friends about your worries instead of keeping them bottled up inside. Give way to humor into your daily lifestyle and that can keep you from brooding.

Stress is a powerful and unavoidable feeling. The way we manage and react to stress is important for our health. When you have had a productive week, there is nothing as rejuvenating as taking time to rest.
