istation We started a club for our ESL students titled the B.E.S.T. club (Bilingual Education Study Team) that's available everyday, Monday through Thursday, before and after school. The students were invited to participate in at least two of the available sessions per week to give them the opportunity to work on our fantastic new istation computer program. The students are thrilled to be in the club and they are benefiting from the extra language and reading practice. Thanks to the Multicultural/ESOL Department for affording us this terrific program! We love it! Odalys Sage Reading/Curriculum/ E.S.O.L. Specialist Lakeside Elementary

On 11/3/09 we had the opportunity to celebrate our Hispanic Heritage Musical Celebration with over 400 hundred parents. Students were able to perform in different Hispanic costumes representing various countries. They performed to the rhythm of Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Carlos Vives, Oscar De Leon, Daddy Yankee, Selena Quintanilla, and a special visit of the Mariachis Pacho Villa. We also had the presence of the Sun Sentinel Newspaper, who kindly placed a photo in the 11/4/09 edition. Many hours where invested and it certainly paid off. One of our student expressed, "Thank you Ms. Mendoza for helping us with the program, now they will know that our music is bella y caliente". ELL Recognized by Kids of Character

The Sun Sentinel highlights students who best exemplify the Broward County School District’s eight character education traits. Congratulations to Linda Diaz, student at Northeast High School, who is being recognized for “Cooperation”. Linda learned how to speak English by talking to friends, listening to music, and watching television. Linda helps other students at the school who need her assistance with assignments. She also aids her teacher Loren Price by translating when needed. Keep up the good work!

Holocaust Student Awareness Days for High School Students The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center has planned and funded a prejudice reduction program for 9th - 12th grade students on December 3rd, 9th, and 15th at David Posnack Jewish Community Center. Each high school, center and charter high school has the opportunity to send twenty-five students as participants. With the widespread terrorism in our world today, this program has become more significant and appropriate in sensitizing students to the dangers of discrimination, bigotry, and hatred. Student Awareness Days create an atmosphere of reflection and remembrance and encourage a sense of responsibility for those who attend. Students will learn how and why they can and should take the steps to stand up, speak out, and make a difference. Lectures given by prominent educators and survivors on the history of the Holocaust, its ramifications and implications for today will be augmented by the eyewitness testimony of survivors of the Holocaust who have offered to share their personal experiences with the students and who will be seated at round tables with them. The objective of the program is to create a greater understanding and respect for one another regardless of race, religion, or creed. For more information contact Linda Medvin at 754-321-2969 or [email protected]
