Quick Look Lesson Plan

This ‘But-the-Pieces’ lesson plan is a 4 week intensive upgrade for your students’ sightreading skills. Over the 4 weeks they will work on inter-val recognition, reaction speed at the piano and thoughtful preparation for sightreading exercises.

The Sightreading Supercharge plan is designed for students at the late beginner level and up. As well as the plan and Vibrant Music Teaching re-sources that are mentioned in it, you will also need a sightreading exercise book or a book of simple pieces that will serve this purpose. I suggest the Piano Adventures sightreading series or Improve Your Sightreading by Paul Harris but any book of short pieces will work well.

But-the-Pieces Plans cover aspects other than repertoire. These plans will work well one on one with a student, or in partner, buddy, overlap-ping or small group lessons. Wherever there would be a modification for working with multiple students, this has been noted. All other activities will work with multiple students sitting side by side at one piano or at separate keyboard without much alteration.

2 min Swoop at Sight • Set a timer for 90 seconds and see how many Swoop at Sight cards your student can complete. • Choose the level based on your student’s experience – most will start at level 1.• Keep a tally of the number of cards your student completes in the time so you can compare it week-to-week.

8 min Interval Sprinterval Shminterval

• Play Interval Sprinterval Shminterval with your student. • If they are less experienced, allow them to count out the intervals. If they are already familiar with inter-vals, make them jump forward instead.

5 min Pianoless Prep • Guide your student through the Pianoless Prep score study (at the end of this pdf) for one of their sight-reading exercises. • Once the score is fully decorated, have them play through the piece.• Ask them what they could have done better, and then instruct them to play through once more and then cross it off. It’s important to build this evaluation time into their practice structure as this helps them to improve each time.

5 min Imaginary Pianoless Prep

• For the next sightreading exercise, tell your student they need to imagine the colours on the page instead of actually adding them. • Give them 2 minutes to think through each of the colours in the Pianoless Prep score study.• Get them to play it.• Ask them what they could have done better.• Get them to play it once more and then cross it off.
