Good afternoon, and welcome to WaltonLane for this afternoon’s SouthernCombination League Division 2 fixtureagainst Ifield Galaxy. We extend a warm welcome to our visitorsplayers, officials and supporters who havemade the journey from the Crawley area forthis afternoon’s game, in addition to today’smatch referee, Wayne Webb from Worthing- and hope they all enjoy their short stayhere at Walton Lane.It was another weekend off for the first team– this time though, Intermediate Cupopponents Bexhill United’s PolegroveGround was waterlogged. The tie has since been re-arranged for nextSaturday, November 21, 3pm k.oUnusual circumstances the previousweekend, with Hurstpierpoint scheduledvisitors to Walton Lane – unfortunately theDivision 2 basement outfit were unable toraise a side to hand us a place in the Division2 Cup quarter-final, following a spate ofinjuries, players being unavailable andothers departing. A trip to Roffey awaits inthe last eight (date TBC).The reserves however did survive theweather on Saturday, producing their thirdWest Division home win from four, with a4-1 victory over Rustington here at WaltonLane. Goals from Sam James, Toby Wallis,Kyle Palmer and Ricky Mullen.Goalkeeper Connor Sammon also saved apenalty – Danny Mullen’s squad nowshowing real promise after a difficult startwhich is really pleasing to see.Further up the non-league pyramid, localclubs were doing battle in the 1st Round ofthe FA Cup. Amongst them were ConferenceNational side, Eastleigh stunning League OneCrewe Alexandra.
Those with good memories may recallBosham once played at Eastleigh in the FAVase back in 1988-89, going down 3-1.They’ll probably have mixed feelings aboutdrawing Stourbridge away in round two – awinnable game against lower Leagueopposition, but a missed opportunity for aglamour 3rd round game if they lose.Whitehawk meanwhile continue to fly theflag for Sussex, beating former FootballLeague side, Lincoln City 5-3 at the EnclosedGround on Sunday. They’ll travel toDagenham & Redbridge or Morecambe next.Incredible to think the Hawks were a SussexCounty 1 side only six years ago.We are delighted to welcome our newSports Therapy team, Lee Jones and ScottEverley to the club. Both are currently studying at PortsmouthUniversity – Scott has experience in theSouthern League with Uxbridge, and Leebrings sports massage and tapingqualifications. We are extremely grateful tothe University for answering our need. We’re pleased to be able to give the guys thelive match experience, with both the firstsand reserves set to benefit hugely from theirexpertiseMore good news in that the club has beensuccessful in gaining £750 as part of SussexFA’s Growth Fund in lieu of our FA CharterStandard Status, development and retentionof youth teams at under 15 and 18 levels. In addition, a further £250 from the UKPower Networks sports fund has beengained to put towards training equipmentfor the under 15’s.The u15’s will also be attending Englandu21’s game against Switzerland at the Amexon Monday (16th) with complimentary tickets- again our FA Charter Standard statusshowing its worth.Being voluntary run, this is all of coursefantastic news - and alongside our valuedlocal business sponsors, will go a long way incontinuing a longer term sustainable model, with youth development at our core.Remember the clubhouse and bar is open, with hot and cold food/ drink and scores onthe TV at half and full-time.
Enjoy the game,
Sussex FA Intermediate Cup 2nd RndBy Alan Price
Bosham travelled to CrowboroughCommunity Stadium to get their SussexIntermediate Cup campaign under way -with the return journey a happy onefollowing a two goal win amidst theanticipated return to Bosham colours ofGraeme Dowden. The Robins were two goals up after onlyeight minutes, against a youthful bluesside, thanks to finishes from JakeLafferty and the redoubtable DaveStorey.First, Marco Giambelardini provided asearching cross into the area from theleft which was headed across goal byMatt Docherty for Lafferty, who neededno second invitation to rattle the ball inoff the keeper, Tom Tear.Crowborough were stunned but cameback looking to return the favour butwere quickly caught out again byanother devastating surge from theRobins. This time the defensive frailties wereexposed again with Dowden picking outStorey on the edge of the box andStorey turned on a sixpence and fired anexpert, curling, effort into the roof ofthe net.The match became a little scrappy afterthis with both sides finding it hard togain control of proceedings and fewchances to speak of.
Ollie Hyland looked sharp for them blueswith good, energetic, pace and FestasLori made life awkward for the Boshamdefence. The likes of Ben Blanshard and DaveBryant had few problems maintainingthe clean sheet and keeper, KieranMagee had little to do as the half woreon.Lafferty then drew a superb save fromTear after the half hour as Boshamlooked for more but in the end, theywould only take two goals with theminto the interval. The second half, on an increasinglyheavy pitch saw Crowborough comeinto the game a lot more. Not being out the tie gave them hopeand with youthful pace and confidencein abundance, Bosham were underpressure to maintain their advantage.Clear chances were rare and Magee hadno problems protecting his goal.Substitute, Barry Dickott used his sizeand strength well for the blues to helpcreate space but the Robin’s back linemade sure to, effectively, clear anydangers.Bosham were somewhat guilty of takingtheir foot off the gas during the half but,in the end, were clear winners toprogress in the competition.Next up is another tricky tie away toBexhill United u21’s, with future roundsalso potentially throwing more away tiesat the feet of the reds.Bosham: Magee, Probee, Bulbeck,Bryant, Blanshard, Docherty, Wilson,Giambelardini, Storey, Giambelardini,Dowden. IN THE BEGINNINGI’ve been watching Non-League football ona regular basis since I was 10 years old. What I like most is that the players, clubofficials and supporters are there for thelove of the game. The true spirit offootball exists at Non-League level.I grew up in North-West London and I wastaken by my family to see my local clubQPR as a child in the 1970’s.I’ve always supported the R’s, but whenthey were playing away from home Istarted going to see my local Non-Leagueclubs – Hendon primarily, but alsoFinchley, Barnet and Edgware Town.
GROUNDHOPPERFrom there, I decided to visit every Non-League club in London as mygroundhopping bug began. By the time Iwas 17, I had visited all 92 Football Leaguegrounds and I visited all the ScottishLeague grounds whilst still a teenager.Since then, I’ve continued travelling allaround the country to visit Non-Leagueclubs. Earlier this season, I chalked up my2,000th ground at FC United ofManchester.
WORLD RECORDOne of the best groundhops was beingpart of a world record in March 2004. Ijoined 250 other groundhoppers to watchfive matches at five different footballgrounds in one day in the CentralMidlands League. This is listed in the Guinness Book ofRecords and we received certificatesconfirming the world record at the end ofthe fifth game.
INSIDE PRISON!In December 2011, I set about watching amatch inside Feltham Prison in Middlesex. This featured a team called Phoenix FC,who had to play all their fixtures at home(for obvious reasons!) as inmates of theYoung Offender Institution at Feltham.I received special permission by email toattend a fixture, but I was told not to bringa phone or a camera with me. I wasinstructed to arrive in the main car parkalong with the match referee and thevisiting players from Hanworth Villa Vets.We were met by members of the prisonstaff who escorted us all in together…viaan airport-style metal detector, a bodysearch, numerous locked gates and along apath to the changing rooms. This process took 45 minutes. After theplayers and ref got changed, we were thenaccompanied through more locked gatesout to the playing area.A high mesh fence with barbed wire on topsurrounded the football pitch. There weredug-outs along one touchline and Iwatched the match from there as the onlyspectator.
THE FUTUREBy going to FC United, I re-completed visitsto the top 16 divisions of English footballdown to Non-League step 4. Then at step 5I need 30 grounds and another 81 at step6.There are endless possibilities at step 7and below. Also, I’ve been to 35 Europeancountries plus the USA for football – so itwould be nice to visit more countries.
