v-gel®

advanced veterinary airwaymanagement system

The v-gel® is the first true veterinary species specificsupraglottic airway devices. Its core technology wasfirst proven to work in the human anaesthesia andresuscitation airway management sector, specifically the‘i-gel’ airway device (www.i-gel.com), which is deliveringsignificant patient and user benefits on a global scale.

Docsinnovent® are innovation leaders in airway managementdevices. Its founders led the ‘i-gel’ product and manufacturingtechnology development programme all the way to marketrealisation. After an extensive new research and developmentprogramme, Docsinnovent bring the same benefits experienced inhumans into the veterinary anaesthesia and resuscitation sector with thefirst-ever species specific veterinary supraglottic airway devices.

‘v-gel®’ name is derived for ‘v’ for ‘veterinary’ and ‘gel’ to highlight that it usesa very soft gel-like material that contributes with anatomically shaped featuresto give a trauma-free high quality pressure seal around the airway andoesophageal structures. ‘v-gel®’ is an internationally patented, radicalinnovation for veterinary anaesthesia which delivers significant benefits:C

•No post-operative coughing or gagging

•Low airway breathing resistance due to the large airway channel within the device

•High quality pressure seal restricting leakage of volatile anaesthetic agents, thusimproving health and safety in anaesthesia and overcoming patient sensitisation tosmell – a common problem in rabbits.

•Super soft contoured tip for a highly effective upper oesophagus seal to preventpotential aspiration of reflux fluid.

•Integral gas sampling port to reduce re-breathing dead-space and making highquality monitoring easier.

•Integral bite block to stop patient damaging device and occluding the airway

•Materials validated for autoclave sterilisation to eliminate cross-infection.

What it doesv-gel®, has been researched, designed and developed specificallyfor veterinary use to establish a highly efficient and effective airwayduring general anaesthesia and resuscitation without the need forendotracheal tube intubation and therefore reduce anaesthesiaairway-related morbidity and mortality issues.

How it worksThe v-gel® shape is contoured to be a mirror of the upper airwayanatomical structures in each of the species of animal for which itis designed, and incorporates a unique soft gel-like material toprovide a fine adjustment of fit and super soft pressure seal. Theseelements merge to give a proficient user a fast, easy, accurate andsafe airway device placement with a high quality seal around theperipharyngo-laryngeal framework and the upper oesophagus, which overcomes tissue compression and displacement trauma topatients.

Research and developmentThe v-gel® research and development programme has beenconducted over several years and involved conducting extensiveliterature research; exhaustive post mortem neck dissectionanalysis with each relevant specie of animal; anatomicalmodelling; CAD modelling; radiological imaging; and extensiveproto typing to obtain the correct shapes to mirror the anatomicalairway structures which when combined with the super soft gel-like material give a high quality seal to overcome issues oftracheal and upper airway trauma. Following on from this, ownerconsented preliminary clinical trials were conducted for initialanalysis and evaluation which, once approved, then led onto largescale patient clinical trials conducted at both private veterinarypractices and university hospitals across the UK and Europe.v-gel® is therefore a product of a diverse expert user and in-useexperience.

Advanced veterinary airway managementv-gel® is at the very core of delivering an ‘advanced veterinaryairway management system’. Our tube holder (d-grip®), tyingmaterial (V-Tie); device lubricating gel (VetLube™) together with ourpatient monitoring equipment provide the essential comple -mentary components to further optimise the delivery of advancedairway management in veterinary practice.

Reusablev-gel® is guaranteed for re-use up to 40 timesfollowing an auto clave procedure between eachpatient use. The holding tray features a useful indexchart to assist compliance towards best practice

against cross-infection. We recommend thatthe 121°C autoclave cycle is used forsterilisation.

v-gel® key features

Shoulder – provides tactile stoppoint for insertion control andimproves resistance to rotation andmalposition when device is in place

All v-gel® devices aresupplied sterile andready for use

v-gel® for RABBITSThe v-gel® for rabbits isdesigned exclusively for thisspecies and includes all of thefeatures of the v-gel® for felinesexcept for the inflatable dorsalpressure adjuster

Tongue pressure relief areareduces risk of lingualcompression or cyanosis

Cuff – anatomical matchingcontours with soft gel-like sealing ventral (airway) face

Cuff Tip – Contoured softgel-like material to deliver atrauma-free oesophagealseal

Airway channel – large airway channel tominimise the increase in airway resistancenormally seen with small diameterendotracheal tubes. The device can begently flexed without collapsing the airway

Integral bite-blockprovides protection forthe airway, preventingthe device frompuncture if the patientbites down

Monitoring port cap –prevents gas leakagewhen monitoring samplingline is not attached

Wing sections andmoulded tie ridges onthe body provide variousdevice-to-patient securingpoints to ensure toprevent malpositionduring use.
