A Doppler radar is a specialized radar that uses the Doppler effect to produce velocity
data about objects at a distance.
It does this by bouncing a microwave signal off a desired target and analyzing how the
object's motion has altered the frequency of the returned signal. This variation gives
direct and highly accurate measurements of the radial component of a target's velocity
relative to the radar.
Doppler radars are used in aviation, sounding satellites, Major League
Baseball's StatCast system, meteorology, radar guns, radiology and healthcare (fall
detection and risk assessment, nursing or clinic purpose), and bistatic radar (surface-to-
air missiles).
The ‘Akademik Lomonosov’ is to be the first of a fleet of floating nuclear power stations to
be stationed in the Russian Arctic.
The 144-by-30-metre (472-by-98-foot) power plant holds two reactors with two 35
megawatt nuclear reactors that are similar to those used to power icebreaker ships.
The power plant has no propulsion of its own. It will be towed up North to avoid the
steep cost of shipping it by land piece by piece to remote areas.
The plant is capable of producing enough electricity to power a town of 200,000
residents, far more than the 5,000 living in Pevek.

FACTS ABOUT GST
Goods and Service Tax (GST) is an indirect tax (or consumption tax} levied in India on the
sale of goods and services. GST is levied at every step in the production process, but is
refunded to all parties in the chain of production other than the final consumer.
Goods and services are divided into five tax slabs for collection of tax - 0%, 5%, 12%,18%
and 28%. Petroleum products and alcoholic drinks are taxed separately by the
individual state governments. There is a special rate of 0.25% on rough precious and semi-
precious stones and 3% on gold. In addition a cess of 22% or other rates on top of 28% GST
applies on few items like aerated drinks, luxury cars and tobacco products. Pre-GST, the
statutory tax rate for most goods was about 26.5%, Post-GST, most goods are expected to
be in the 18% tax range.
The tax came into effect from July 1, 2017 through the implementation of One Hundred
and First Amendment of the Constitution of India by the Modi government. The tax
replaced existing multiple cascading taxes levied by the central and state governments
RBI TO BUY RS 10,000 CRORE OF GOVERNMENT BONDS
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that it would buy Rs. 10,000 crore of government bonds via open market operation (OMO).
The RBI made this announcement after failing to sell all the debt it had offered to bidders earlier.
After the RBI made this announcement, there was a spike in bond yields.
An open market operation (OMO) is an activity by a central bank to give (or take) liquidity
in its currency to (or from) a bank or a group of banks.
The central bank can either buy or sell government bonds in the open market (this is where
the name was historically derived from) or, in what is now mostly the preferred solution,
enter into a repo or secured lending transaction with a commercial bank: the central bank
gives the money as a deposit for a defined period and synchronously takes an eligible asset
as collateral.
A central bank uses OMO as the primary means of implementing monetary policy. The
usual aim of open market operations is—aside from supplying commercial banks with
liquidity and sometimes taking surplus liquidity from commercial banks—to manipulate the
short-term interest rate and the supply of base money in an economy, and thus indirectly
control the total money supply, in effect expanding money or contracting the money supply.
This involves meeting the demand of base money at the target interest rate by buying and
selling government securities, or other financial instruments. Monetary targets, such
as inflation, interest rates, or exchange rates, are used to guide this implementation.
