A t the end of 2011, CDC announced its partner- ship with the University of Toledo’s College of Business and Innovation. By the terms of the partnership, CDC would offer the MBA program right here in Egypt. Never before has it been so easy to ob- tain an MBA program from a prestigious overseas in- stitution without boarding a plane. Through this partnership, CDC was able to bring this dream home for many and offer unprecedented accessibility. It’s been well over a year since this important part- nership was concluded and we are now witnessing its wonderful results. It is with much pride that I announce that the first group of attendees have successfully completed the program and obtained their well-earned MBA. The first group was comprised of 18 partici- pants. The program began in May 2012 and was completed a little over a year later in June 2013. In May 2013, the second group of participants commenced the program. They are scheduled to complete the program and obtain their MBA in June 2014. Many of the students currently enrolled in the program have been referred by graduates of the first group – one of the greatest testaments to the success and value of the program. Instruction for the classes are carried out by highly-esteemed professors from the University of Toledo. The MBA program consists of in-depth business courses and a comprehensive Strategic Management Capstone course. The program utilizes relevant case studies and simulations. Six of the program’s courses are delivered live in Egypt by the University’s professors and two of the courses are delivered via video conference. Upon completion of the program, graduates earn an accredited MBA degree from the United States. The University of Toledo is based in Ohio, USA. The College of Business and Innovation was established in 1930 and is among the five percent of business schools to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), one of the highest standards of achievement for business schools worldwide. The College of Business and Innovation is known for integrating disciplinary excellence with technological expertise and knowledge with practice and is highly regarded as a learning partner. We are looking into other possible partnerships with the University of Toledo in hopes of making even more programs accessibly to the Egyptian population, Once again, I congratulate the first graduating class for their hard work and commitment to the program and for earning their MBA. I look forward to seeing the next group, and many more to come enjoy the same level of achievement. Sincerely, Dr. Mohamed Amin S. At the end of 2011, CDC announced its partner-

ship with the University of Toledo’s College of

Business and Innovation. By the terms of the

partnership, CDC would offer the MBA program right

here in Egypt. Never before has it been so easy to ob-

tain an MBA program from a prestigious overseas in-

stitution without boarding a plane. Through this

partnership, CDC was able to bring this dream home

for many and offer unprecedented accessibility.

It’s been well over a year since this important part-

nership was concluded and we are now witnessing its

wonderful results. It is with much pride that I announce

that the first group of attendees have successfully

completed the program and obtained their well-earned

MBA. The first group was comprised of 18 partici-

pants. The program began in May 2012 and was completed a little over a year later in June 2013. In May 2013, the second

group of participants commenced the program. They are scheduled to complete the program and obtain their MBA in June

2014. Many of the students currently enrolled in the program have been referred by graduates of the first group – one of the

greatest testaments to the success and value of the program. Instruction for the classes are carried out by highly-esteemed

professors from the University of Toledo.

The MBA program consists of in-depth business courses and a comprehensive Strategic Management Capstone course.

The program utilizes relevant case studies and simulations. Six of the program’s courses are delivered live in Egypt by the

University’s professors and two of the courses are delivered via video conference. Upon completion of the program, graduates

earn an accredited MBA degree from the United States.

The University of Toledo is based in Ohio, USA. The College of Business and Innovation was established in 1930 and is

among the five percent of business schools to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business

(AACSB International), one of the highest standards of achievement for business schools worldwide. The College of Business

and Innovation is known for integrating disciplinary excellence with technological expertise and knowledge with practice and

is highly regarded as a learning partner. We are looking into other possible partnerships with the University of Toledo in hopes

of making even more programs accessibly to the Egyptian population,

Once again, I congratulate the first graduating class for their hard work and commitment to the program and for earning

their MBA. I look forward to seeing the next group, and many more to come enjoy the same level of achievement.

Thinking, Fast and Slow Daniel Kahneman (Author)

In the international bestseller, Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman, the

renowned psychologist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, takes us on a

groundbreaking tour of the mind and explains the two systems that drive the way

we think. System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more delib-

erative, and more logical. The impact of overconfidence on corporate strategies,

the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future, the profound effect

of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning our next

vacation—each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems

shape our judgments and decisions.

Engaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think, Kahneman re-

veals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the ben-

efits of slow thinking. He offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices

are made in both our business and our personal lives—and how we can use different

techniques to guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble. Winner

of the National Academy of Sciences Best Book Award and the Los Angeles Times

Book Prize and selected by The New York Times Book Review as one of the ten

best books of 2011, Thinking, Fast and Slow is destined to be a classic.

Call your contacts only when you need them and your network will fall apart. Instead, devote some time each day to connecting with

people when you don’t need them. Add these simple activities to each week:

• Share a meal. At least three times a week, invite a contact to dine with you. If time is tight, have a cup of coffee together.

• Write a note. At least three times a day, send an e-mail, comment on a blog or handwrite a message to connect with someone

who isn’t on your to-do list.

• Send a gift. Instead of giving during the holidays, show people that they are special throughout the year. Once a week send a

small gift, such as a book or framed photo, to someone.

People will remember you well—and be more willing to give—when you need them.

AmCham’s Career Development Center (CDC) organized two employment fairs last

April. The first fair took place on April 20, 2013 in the city of Alexandria. The fair took

place at the Hilton Alexandria Corniche. Over 500 job seekers visited the fair and 12

exhibiting companies participated.

The second fair took place on April 28, 2013 on the campus of Assiut University.

Over 750 job seekers visited the fair during the day and 10 exhibiting companies par-

ticipated in search of potential candidates to fill their company vacancies.

Since 2004, CDC has been organizing its Annual Employment and Professional Development Fair for Middle Manage-

ment in Cairo with much success. The Fair has proved to be a valuable recruitment resource for both employers and job

seekers and offers a professional outlet for qualified candidates in search of employment opportunities. The Fair also

offers employers the chance to showcase their companies and fulfill their staffing needs. Organizing employment fairs in

Assiut and Alexandira allows CDC to extend this valuable job-seeking service to a wider audience outside the greater

Cairo area.

Field All Types of QuestionsCustomize your persuasive pitches according to the kinds of questions decision makers are likely to ask. Pre-

pare for these four types:

• “What” questions. People who ask “What” typically want results, speed and control. They may be somewhat

hot-tempered or immediate you with their directness. Your best approach: Warm up quickly, and use a

just-the-facts approach. Offer them options, so they feel in control.

• “Who” questions. People asking “Who” want you to display enthusiasm and excitement. They generally

are upbeat people who may be talkative or become emotional. Your best approach: Use an entertaining,

fast-approach and don’t offer a ton of details. Compliment prospects, and ask for their opinions.

• “How” questions. People who ask “How” want to know you are trustworthy. They may appear indifferent

and withdraw if they feel “sales pressure.” Your best approach: Warm up slowly and use a low-key, but de-

tailed, approach. Show them respect.

• “Why” questions. People who ask “Why” want you to assure them about quality, safety and logic. They may

become a bit aloof or sarcastic. Your best approach: Use an analytical, detailed approach. Offer them ad-

equate time to “think it over.”

Employees are more likely to trust

managers and colleagues who are

able to acknowledge their own er-

rors or weaknesses. When is the

last time you said one of the follow-

ing important phrases at work?

• “I’m sorry.”

• “I made a mistake.”

• “I was wrong.”

• “I don’t know.”

• “Would you help me?”

• “Could you explain this to me? I’m

not sure I get it.”

• “What do you think?”

• “What would you do?”

Rather than being signs of weak-

those phrases show self-confidence

Add Drama to

Your Slide Shows

Make slide presentations more memo-

rable by injecting them with emotion.

How? Use vivid pictures and poignant

stories. Adopt these techniques:

• Paint a picture. Avoid the unoriginal

clip art that everyone uses: the

handshake, the lock and key, the

calculator, the diverse team of smil-

ing people. Instead, make the audi-

ence “see” the emotion behind your

message. “When I tell one of my sig-

nature stories—of how our families,

friends, health and integrity are like

glass balls that we can’t just drop—

I show an image of a glass ball,”

says communication expert Re-

becca Ryan. “I don’t shadow a slide

that says ‘Work/Life Balance: Job,

Family, Friends, Health and In-

tegrity.”

• Tell a story. Imagine that you are

preparing a slide presentation for a

sale meeting and you want your

prospects to think: “Wow! They have

a lot of experience in our industry.”

Many presenters would prepare a

slide listing all the clients they have

served in that industry. A better idea

is to tell a story about a client who

has faced a similar predicament.

Relate how you helped solve the

problem for that client, and include

a twist or funny ending that is partic-

ularly memorable.

Tailored Workshops

Find the Flaws in

Your DraftsBecome your best critic. Clearly see how to im-

prove your writing by adopting these habits:

• Pause. Before you review what you have

written, take a break. Ideally you will have

several days between when you write and

when you review. If that’s not possible, take

a short break and change your view. Exam-

ple: If you wrote the document on your desk-

top computer, print it out and sit in another

room to review it.

• Read through it once without making any

changes. If you want to note something so

you won’t forget it, write on another paper.

• Strengthen words. The next time through,

carefully review each part of speech. Can

your nouns be more specific? Your verbs

more vivid? Tip: Try to replace each form of

“to be”, such as is, are and was. Are your ad-

jectives and adverbs improving clarity?

• Moderate sentences. Divide long sentences

to make them easier to read and understand.

Use short sentences to emphasize points.

• Listen. After polishing the work, read the new

draft aloud. That will tell you if the writing

flows and if you have omitted any words.
