Good afternoon, and welcome to WaltonLane for this afternoon’s SouthernCombination League Division 2 fixtureagainst AFC Roffey. We extend a warm welcome to our visitorsplayers, officials and supporters who havemade their journey from the Horsham area,in addition to today’s match referee, AndrewHinton from Worthing - and hope they allenjoy their short stay here at Walton Lane. It’s always a good weekend when all ourteams notch up three points – and that wasexactly the case seven days ago.Andy Probee took his first team toHurstpierpoint, with a scintillating startbeing rewarded by an incredible threeRobins’ goals in the opening five minutes, before Marco Giambelardini added hissecond of the afternoon just before thebreak to effectively end the game as acontest. Neil Redman and Alex Barnes werealso on t he score sheet. While the hosts clearly have challengesahead since reverting back from theiramalgamation with Burgess Hill Albion - apartnership that only lasted one season –they did rally in the second half and to theircredit, pulled a goal back.No doubt we’ll be disappointed in notkeeping a clean sheet and seemingly falling abit ‘flat’ in the second half. That said, the win moves us up to second inthe Division 2 table, and a return of 14 goals‘for’ from the last four League games isperhaps testament to how ruthless we’vebeen in front of goal.Danny Mullen’s improving reserves notchedtheir second win of the season with a localderby victory (2-1) over Selsey, here atWalton Lane.
Sam James restored parity after going a goalbehind, before captain Ben Isaac netted thewinner late on from the penalty spot tomaintain their 100% home record. The reserves visit Billingshurst this afternoon(also 3pm).The under 15’s then made it a ‘full-house’ onSunday morning, as they beat WorthingTown Red 2-0. Cameron Cassar and LewisRustell with the Bosham goals – who moveup to third in the Arun & Chichester ‘C’Division after a positive start. So on to today’s game with AFC Roffey – aclub who historically – we’ve had manytussles with during their previous guise as‘Forest’.No bigger example of this was the SussexIntermediate Cup final in 2009 when Forestbeat us 1-0 at Lancing’s Culver Road ground. It’s perhaps a little ironic that we’ve playedopponents of both our Intermediate Cupfinals in successive home fixtures, followingthe Rustington game a fortnight ago!Last week saw their first win of the season –a 4-1 home win verus fellow newbies, Alfold.Off the field, we are delighted to announceSims Williams as our new ‘Pitch Sponsors’ -with the village estate agents’ backingensuring the club can continue to maintainthe pitch to a high standard, given theincrease in use across the club’s two adultand two youth teams this season. We thank them for their support and hopeto work to a long and successful partnership.Special mention to our first team players,James Wilson, Louis Bell and Matt Docherty– all of whom are running the Great SouthRun on Sunday, October 25 in aid of theirrespective charities which are promotedwithin this programme, on our website andsocial media – do give what you can, and letthe betting commence as to who will be firstover the line?!If you can’t get down to Southsea seafront tocheer them on, all the action unfolds onChannel 5!Remember the clubhouse and bar is openserving hot and cold food/ drink and scoreson the TV at half and full-time.
Enjoy the game,
Southern Combination – Division 2By Alan Price
A stirring early blast from Bosham leftHurstpierpoint reeling and heading forinevitable defeat as the Robins kept uptheir recent surge in form to moveanother step closer to the top of thedivision two table. The blues meanwhile, languish at thebottom of the pile and need a majorturnaround in fortunes to avoid furtherhardships at the Fairfield. The writing was on the wall as early as thesecond minute when a Neil Redman wasthe beneficiary of good work from strikepartner, Dave Storey. Storey rosepowerfully at the back post to head downinto the path of Redman who fired hometo open his account for the match.Minutes later and the lead was doubled asBosham continued to break down theblues defence, seemingly at will. On thisoccasion Marco Giambelardini was in theright place at the right time to lash homeinto the bottom corner afterHurstpierpoint failed to deal with a setpiece swung in from wide right. From the re-start Bosham surged forwardagain and this time Alex Barnes was onhand to flick the ball in at the near postafter Giambelardini had used his wizardingskills to gain yards to the bye line and hislow drive was cheekily put home byBarnes, leaving the blues shell shocked atthe score line and fearful of just how badthe game could get.Bosham maintained their progress as thehalf wore on but the number of chanceswere not as clear cut as they had been.
‘keeper, Martin Smith, was getting a toughtest but rallied somewhat, making somesterling saves to keep the hosts hopesalive. The youthful blues kept going and TomWard showed good pace down the right tokeep Bosham on their toes but was unableto create meaningful chances for strikers,Tim Ojo or Jamie West.Hurstpierpoint didn’t get frustrated andhave to be credited with the spirit theyshowed despite being firmly behind in thegame - and things almost got worse onthe half hour when Redman went throughon goal but saw his curling effort go justwide.Close to half time and the inevitable didhappen as Bosham added a fourth throughGiambelardini who turned Levi Austininside out before finding the bottomcorner with an excellently placed effort. The blues were still in the game andneeded a big effort in the second half ifthey had any intentions of turning the tiearound.Indeed Hurstpierpoint were muchimproved after the break as Boshamseemed to retreat into their shell andbecome worryingly flat, allowing the bluesto enjoy much increased possession andterritory. With around ten minutes left on the clockHurstpierpoint finally got their deservedgoal through the excellent substitute, JohnBrazil.Ward again bamboozled the Boshamdefence with a jinking run and then causedmayhem in the reds defence who failed toclear properly and Brazil was on hand tofire home to ruin Bosham’s hopes of aclean sheet from the tie.The match fizzled out after that but thepoints were firmly in the bag for the reds.Bosham: Magee, Docherty, Blanshard,Stevens, Bell, Wilson, Giambelardini, Storey,Redman, Barnes. Forest celebrate winning the Sussex County FA Intermediate Cup in 2008/09 – beating Bosham1-0 in the final (Photo: Terry Buckman)
The 2008-9 season saw the club not onlycelebrating its 50th anniversary but alsoreturning to its original club colours ofTangerine and White.Completing the season with a decentleague finish of 6th place was enhancedby winning the Sussex FA's IntermediateCup – ironically, a 1-0 win over Bosham atLancing’s Culver Road ground.A Jake Holmes goal enough to separatethe teams and ensure Forest's name wasadded to the trophy for a second time.It was the turn of the reformed Reserveteam to take the honours in the 2009-10season as they won West Sussex LeagueDivision 4 (North) and gain promotion intheir first competitive season. The club asa whole benchmarked the season as itgained recognition from the SussexCounty Football Association with theaward of the FA Charter Standard. At the time, the reserve team wereplaying in the West Sussex FootballLeague, evolving to become the club’sfirst team, with a successful run of fourstraight promotions.AFC Roffey were one of six new-intake forthe re-branded SCFL this season – joiningfrom Division 1 of the West SussexLeague - and after a challenging start atthe higher standard, recorded their firstLeague victory last weekend – a 4-1 homewin against fellow newcomers, Alfold.Ben Hands scored two for the hosts, withLouis Masih and Chris Manvell also findingthe net, which will give the Spooners Laneoutfit renewed confidence coming intotoday’s game.
AFC Roffey – formerly known as ForestFootball Club – were founded in 1958under the name ’Forest Old Boys’, beingoriginally for former pupils of ForestBoys' School in Comptons Lane,Horsham.Matches were played at the schoolplaying fields and the club progressedthrough the Horsham League andCrawley & District League into the now-defunct Southern CountiesCombination.1987-88 was a turning point for theclub. A move from Forest School to thebetter facilities at their current home -Roffey Social & Sports Club in SpoonersRoad - meant Forest were eligible forpromotion to the County League.During their one season in the MidSussex League, the first-team won boththe Premier Division title and the SussexIntermediate Cup.Forest's 20 seasons in the CountyLeague have produced many ups anddowns, but the club has alwaysremained in Division Three.Improved guard rails and hard-standingareas were installed in the summer of2001.The club enjoyed its most successfulseason ever in 2001-02 when finishing inthird place in Division Three, just onespot away from promotion to seniorfootball for the first time.An important landmark was reachedwhen the reserve team was elected tothe County League's reserve section andthe under-18 team re-joined the CountyLeague.

On Saturday, October 25, Bosham’s captain, James Wilson - alongside team mates, Louis Belland Matt Docherty – will be taking part in the Great South Run - all in the name of charity.

Do please visit their charity pages listed below, and give what you can for some terrific causes:
