Here are a few tips: Using good manners- Teenager Maya Van Wagenen was new to her Brownsville, Texas , school and wanted to be more popular. So using a 1950s etiquette book called “Betty Cornell’s Teen-Age Popularity Guide,” Van Wagenen began to follow advice such as being yourself, not putting on “airs” and treating everyone with the same kindness. The advice not only helped the teen become more popular, but the chronicling of her efforts garnered her a $300,000 book deal. DreamWorks has optioned movie rights to the book. If being nice and polite can make a teenager popular and successful, why not you? Offering compliments-Compliments are a great way to make others feel good about themselves, and that can help them feel good about you. Just be careful of what you choose to compliment. Avoiding gossip-Do you like being gossiped about? No? Neither does anyone else. Don’t do it if you want to be liked by other people. Listening better-If you offer your undivided attention to someone, you convey the message that you think they’re important. If you become a good sounding board, others are more likely to seek you out more often. Don’t fake it ‘til you make it- Don’t try to be someone you’re not when you’re trying to increase your popularity. We all have individual strengths and gifts, so think about the positive things people have said about you. Use those abilities to increase your popularity, whether it’s an ability to stay calm during stressful times or a gift for negotiating. I am sure you have read the famous book “How to win friends and influence people”. It is really interesting to

follow the practical tips given by Dale Carnegie in his book. As a matter of fact there are lots of other such books

easily available for self-improvement. One has to really create that desire for enhancing self- esteem. Once the

desire is created then it becomes easy to win friends and influence people. It is possible by following and

practicing simple things in day- to- day life. Here are a few tips:

Using good manners- Teenager Maya Van Wagenen was new to her Brownsville, Texas , school and wanted to be more popular. So using a 1950s etiquette book called “Betty Cornell’s Teen-Age Popularity Guide,” Van Wagenen began to follow advice such as being yourself, not putting on “airs” and treating everyone with the same kindness. INDEPENDENCE DAY “15th August 1947” a golden day engraved in

the history of the world. The day that marked

our independence, our victory and our

freedom. Achieving independence was not

easy. A lot of struggle and sacrifices have given

us this freedom that we enjoy and, at times,

misuse. It is not just a national festival but a

celebration within. It gives us the warmth and

security we all seek. It reminds us of the

innumerable sacrifices and selfless services of

our defense forces, who act as the guarding

angels of this freedom. We were the

priviledged to have been born in free India but

we must not allow those hard times, struggles

and sacrifices to fade away from our

memories. It is befitting for us to celebrate this

national festival and recall the heroic deeds of

our national heroes and pay oue sincere

homage to them. Today we have come a long

way in the path of free India. On the occasion

of the 67th Independence Day, let us as

students pledge to do our duty of preparing

ourselves to be well educated and

knowledgeable citizens of tomorrow. India will

be a super power in the coming years but it

can only be achieved if we, the torch bearers

of the future break free from the cages of cast,

creed, religion and language and stand united

as only Indians. If we break free from the

clutches of dishonesty, corruption and

ignorance then we have achieved true

independence.

I remember on this occasion the famous poem

of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. I quote

“Where the mind is without fear and the head

INTERVIEW WITH COLONEL V.N.THAPAR Arvind: Good morning sir, we welcome you to

Jagran Public School.

Colonel Thapar: It is a wonderful school. I have

seen your programme it was very good and

you all are very talented children.

Arvind: Sir we have a newsletter ECHO which

comes out in every three months and is

circulated through the internet. We would like

to ask you a few questions for the same. Sir we

know that you have a family lineage in the

armed forces. Your grandfather, father and son

all were in the army. We would like to know

something else about you. How are you

spending your life after retirement?

Colonel Thapar: It is a fully packed life for me

and my wife. Normally people are known for

their parents but we are known for our son. He

fell while fighting against Pakistan. We go to

many functions like yours. We also do a lot of

social work. There is a lot of reading and

writing that is done and then there is my

granddaughter who keeps me

busy.

Tanmayata: Sir we are proud of Captain

Vijyant's sacrifice and gallantry. We wish some

of us will follow his footsteps to join the army,

but sir in the recent years we have seen that

the youth today is demoralized, they are

choosing other careers over the army. What

steps would you suggest to bring back the

youth?

Colonel Thapar: You know army is a

profession. Those who want to fly will join the

airforce. You can take them to IITs and IIIMs ,

you can take them anywhere, they’ll leave it

and go back to the army. If you want to lead a

full man's life, you should join the army. It is

not like the corporate life "paisa mil gaya".

They move in AC cars,AC offices and go back to

their houses. What is their life? At 15, I had

gone to NDA, there you have horse riding,

firing, flying, sailing, whatever you like and

studying. I used to study 23 subjects. You

become a complete man.

Tanmayata: Which was your favourite subject?

Colonel Thapar: Now, you dont embarass me!

I wasn't good in studies.

None of the subjects were my favourite.

Arvind: Sir we are all aware of the brutal

slaying of our soldiers by Pakistan's army.

Should we just keep on talking about it or

should some action be taken? What is your

take on it?

Colonel Thapar: I don't want to make any

critical comments about how the country is

being run. When I was selected for the army,

everybody wanted to join army first and then

the IAS. Gradually you know, the neglect of the

army has resulted this but the quality of life

doesn't diminish. Every cantonment has got

swimming pool, personally you have to play

with your men every day. 1 hour you have got

to play. You have P.T. You have to pass

examinations. Where else do you get this kind

of life? You have sports club, golf courses.

Playing golf in Noida is a very big thing but for

an army person, every cantonment has got its

Page 9: V 5 I 2 J ULY 20I3 SEP 20I3 From The Desk of the … July, 2013 to...“Bastille Day”. In France it is a national holiday which is celebrated all over the country. Origin of this

own golf course. Rations are free,

accommodation and transport is free.

Arvind: Few politicians have said unacceptable

things for those soldiers who died in a recent

attack by Pakistan's army. How do you

feel about it?

Colonel Thapar: Did you listen to me on the

T.V? ‘humne un logo se kaha ki aise bayaan

islie aate hain’ because if they had their own

sons among those who died they wouldn't

have tolerated it. I asked Chief Minister of the

state that why wasn't he there to recieve the

dead bodies? Obama can come 400km to

recieve just 2 bodies but when a body of an

Indian soldier comes, nobody goes.

Arvind: Isme kabhi sudhaar hoga?

Colonel Thapar : Sudhaar hoga kyu nahi hoga?

Aap log hai na, aap layenge sudhaar.

Tanmayata: How do you rate the Indian army?

Colonel Thapar: Best army in the world. But

equipment wise I am sorry!

CAREER COUNSELLING

On Monday 19th august 2013,a seminar was held by the International Knowledge Centre in our school's A.V Room for class 11th and 12th.Different representatives of American Universities were welcomed by J.K Sharma Sir. After the welcome address, the Indian coordinator Mr. Girish Ballolla briefed us about certain mechanisms of American Universities and how & why it is beneficial to study there. Mr. Girish handed over the mike to a 17 years old girl named Apoorva, who got inspired through this very seminar a year ago and decided to study in one of the American Universities. She told us how she started thinking about studying abroad and also about

different obstacles that came her way. It was very difficult for her parents to accept her wishes. According to her parents, sending their child to a place which was several thousand miles away from their country was firstly unsafe and too expensive. But after enquiring about the universities and procedures to get admission in these universities it became a little easier for her parents. She told us about the various steps or levels she had to clear to get admission in American University. It was very difficult for her to study simultaneously for 12th boards and for American University entrance examinations. She concluded by giving us advice to start thinking today about studying abroad so that we can plan out our future in advance. After Apoorva's inspirational story we were motivated and eagerly made enquiries from the representatives of the various universities present there regarding campus, location, functioning, events, etc. there were seven universities namely:-

1. University of Denver- Represented by Aliklein

2. IUPUI- Represented by Evelyn Havel

2. Rutgers University- Represented by Marlo Divovelli

4 Salve Regina University- Represented by

Tricia Mckinney

5. University of Nebraska Lincoln- Represented by Jake Hay Elswick.

6. University of Wisconsin Stevens point-

Represented by Martha Youke

It was a highly motivating and informative session with them, we got a lot of information about the American Universities. SATAKSHI AWASTHI XI-A
