What is low life?

Low Life: The Rise of the Lowly is a tabletop RPG (and a

horde of related products) designed and illustrated by Andy

Hopp and published by Mutha Oith Creations.

The premise is simple, yet hideously complex. Gazil-

lions of years have passed since the Time of the Flush and

the extinction of the vaunted Hoomanrace. The descend-

ants of cockroaches, snack cakes, worms, and lowlier things

now rule the Oith and society is greatly influenced by the

(often misinterpreted) archeological evidence of said Hoo-

manrace.

It’s low brow high adventure in a world where attitude

wins the beans and even the lowliest pile can become a king

by is own spork.

What is living low?

Living Low is the Low Life living campaign (just like it

says in the picture). Of course, if you don’t know what a liv-

ing campaign is that information may be of limited value.

Allow me to explain:

A tabletop RPG living campaign allows participants to

create a character and play that character in multiple, often

interconnected, adventures at various conventions, game

days, and private gaming sessions. The character gains expe-

rience and equipment along the way and maybe, just maybe,

learns a little bit more about himself (or herself) in the pro-

cess. After each session a the Game Boss fills out a brief

online form (at www.LivingLow.org) that describes changes

to each player’s character including: Experience gained,

clams and equipment gained or lost from both the game and

between game activities. After submission, the Living Low

Admins are notified and once approved, you will be notified

and any XP accrued will be available to buy advances.

Your Living Low character can be the same persona you

use on The Whole Hole Suppository of Knowledge

(www.thewholehole.info) or it can be someone else entirely.

How about a table of contents?

Right, I guess I should have put that first. Here you go:

the rules

Living Low uses a slightly modified

version of the Savage Worlds

Deluxe rules by Shane Hensley and

PEG, Inc. (available at www.peginc.com and at game stores

everywhere). Savage Worlds is very simple and easy to play,

which makes it perfect for the time slots offered at most con-

ventions.

Unless otherwise directed follow the rules as described in the

Savage Worlds Deluxe rulebook. In the event of a conflict the

Low Life: The Rise of the Lowly core rulebook takes prece-

dence. Some minor changes to the rules are described in the

following section of this guide.

Living low character generation

The process used to create a character for Living Low

(hitherto known as a Peep) is mostly identical to that used in

the regular Low Life game. Follow the instructions as they are

published beginning on page 114 of the Low Life: The Rise of

the Lowly (Redredged) core rulebook (available at

www.lowtique.com and your favorite game store). A stream-

lined version of the process is described below.

An official Living Low character sheet can be found at the

end of this guide, or use the fillable one from the Living Low

site (www.LivingLow.org).

Choose from any of the official Low Life species as detailed

in the Low Life Redredged core rulebook (LL), The Whole

Hole Volume 1: Keister Island (WH1)), The Whole Hole Vol-

ume 2: Holy Crap (WH2), and approved species described in

The Suppository of Knowledge (SK). Currently, that means

these:

the gist

step one: species

Blorbs (wh2) Bodul (LL) Coblin (wh2) Cremefillian (ll) Croach (ll) Dungce (wh2) flew (wh1) funguy (wh1) Hareian (wh2)

Horc (ll) Marshfellow (wh2) Oofo (ll) Pile (ll) Smelf (ll) Snell (wh1) tizin’t (ll)

Unless your Peep’s species description says otherwise,

begin with a d4 in each of its five main attributes: Agility,

Smarts, Spirit, Strength, and Vigor. The gawds have then

gifted you with an additional 5 points to distribute among

them as you see fit. Raising an attribute one die type costs

one point, and no attribute may be raised above d12

(although certain Edges may belie that claim). Some species

have free Edges that alter their starting attributes, so keep

that in mind.

You have 15 points with which you may purchase or raise

your skills. To raise a skill by a die type costs 1 point, as long

as it’s no higher than its linked attribute. It costs 2 points to

raise a skill past its linked attribute.

The following skills are available in Living Low: Boating,

Contanimating, Crafting, Climbing, Danged-Wrangling,

Dementalism, Driving, Fighting, Gambling, Giggity Gig-

ging, Healing, Hocus Poking, Holy Rolling, Intimidation,

Investigation, Knowledge, Lockpicking, Notice, Perform-

ing, Persuasion, Piloting, Repair, Riding, Shooting, Smell-

casting, Stealth, Streetwise, Survival, Swimming, Taunt,

Throwing, Tracking, and Weirding (Guts = Spirit).

You may nab up to 4 points of Hindrances, which you may

then spend on Attributes, Edges, Skills, and clams. Hin-

drances in Low Life fall into three categories (minor, major,

and doozie). You may take more than 4 points worth of Hin-

drances if you want, but you don’t get any more points for

them (unless you’re a bodul or a tizn’t).

minor: 1 point

major: 2 points

Doozie: 4 points

For 1 Hindrance Point you may (choose one):

Gain a new Skill at d4

Raise a Skill one die type

Start with 500 additional clams

For 2 Hindrance Points you may (choose one):

Raise an Attribute one die type

Choose an Edge

In addition to Edges nabbed by spending Hindrance

Points and the free Edge everybody gets (in Low Life every-

body gets one complimentary Professional Edge), each spe-

cies begins with a selection of Edges, as described presently.

Blorb

TBD

Bodul

Boduls begin with one extra free Edge and may take as

many Background Edges as they want when creating a char-

acter, provided they pay for them with the requisite number

of Hindrances.

They also receive the following Edges: CLEVER (LL page

121) PROUD HERITAGE (LL page 124)

Coblin

TBD

Cremefillian

SPONGY FLESH (LL page 125) TWEENKING (LL page 126)

Tizn’t Hindrances. (LL page 137)

Werm

Pallesthesia (LL page 125) and either RUBBERY (LL page 125)

or REGENERATION (LL page 125)

Charisma

This describes how likeable your peep is. It’s added to Per-

forming, Persuasion, and Streetwise rolls. Your Charisma is

+0 unless modified by Edges or Hindrances.

Pace

Pace is 6” for most peeps, but can be altered by Edges or

Hindrances.

Parry

Parry is equal to 2 plus half your Fighting skill.

Toughness

Toughness is equal to 2 plus half your Vigor.

Power Points

Because peeps can have more than one Arcane Back-

ground in Low Life, PP are handled a bit different. A peep

has a pool of PP for each attribute, that are only usable by

Arcane Powers associated with that attribute, but all the

Arcane Powers associated with that attribute share the same

pool. The pools begin with PP equal to 10+1/2 the relevant

attribute (a hocus poker with d8 Smarts begins with 14 PP in

the Smarts Pool, etc...).

Charisma Pool is used by GIGGITY GIGGERS. Crafting Skill

Pool is used by WEIRDOS. Smarts Pool is shared by DEMEN-

TALISTS, HOCUS POKERS and SMELLCASTERS. Spirit Pool is

shared by DAMMIT BINDERS, DANGED WRANGLERS, and HOLY

ROLLERS. Vigor Pool is used by CONTANIMATORS.

All characters are considered to have a d6 in Knowledge

(Ordinary Tongue) unless they have the Illiterate Hin-

drance. A character gains a d4 in a new Knowledge

(Language) skill for each die of Smarts above d6 he has at

character creation. Check out page LL68 for information

about many of Oith’s languages.

We’re not going to send you out into the world naked and

unarmed (unless you’re into that sort of thing). Characters

begin with 500 clams with which to nab some jazz. This

amount can be altered by various Hindrances and Edges.

Visit Gorbo’s Crapwagon and the associated mongerstalls

beginning on page LL165 to nab your jazz.

Think up a creative and interesting back story for your

peep. Where does she come from? What are her motiva-

tions? Why does she do what she does? Who loves her and

who does she love? What, so to speak, makes her tick? May-

be draw a picture or something…

save it and email it to [email protected]. We will validate

your character and then upload it to the Member List. You

and bosses you play with will be able to download the latest

version anytime!

The first time you play in an official Living Low adventure,

the Boss will fill out an online form that describes the ses-

sion, any gains or losses for the character and what experi-

ence they should be awarded (MAKE SURE THE SESSION

BOSS HAS YOUR PEEP ID!!!). Once the session is ap-

proved, the experience your character deserves will auto-

around the top of the right side navigation column. Click it,

put your peep id and password in and your character over-

most fun to the table.

For FIVE XP, a peep may do ONE of the following:

gain a new or repeatable edge

gain a new skill at d4

increase a skill that is equal to or greater than its

linked attribute by one die type

increase two skills that are lower than their linked at-

tribute by one die type

raise an attribute by one die type (only doable once

per rank)

To spend your XP, sign in at the LivingLow.org web site

and Click the “Allocate Experience to Your Character” Link

(C on the Character Management Dash Board to the right).

If there’s anything you don’t like about the way you de-

signed your Peep, you may recreate her one time before she

spends any XP or reaches the rank of Seasoned. To do so,

revise your character sheet and email it to

[email protected] a note explaining the situation. You will

retain any XP or loot you have accrued.

See the Character Management Tutorial at

www.livinglow.org for information on using the online ap-

plications to manage your Living Low Character!

There are 6 options to spend your XP advancement on:

Raise an Attribute (Once per Level)

Buy an Edge. Remember to make sure you meet all the

criteria for the desired edge!

If a Peep is killed during the course of a Living Low Adven-

ture he is removed from that particular session (he’s in a

coma or something). The player should roll on the Wound

Chart and may receive a permanent injury.

A player whose Peep croaks may play an Extra for the rest

of the session, assuming one exists.

A player may only have one active Living Low Peep at a

time. You may officially retire your Peep and create a new

one at any time. To retire a Peep please tell the Boss after

your adventure and he or she will include that information in

the Post Game Report. Once your Peep is officially retired

you may create a new one using the same process as before.

The Boss will make note of all permanent injuries, muta-

tions, acquired giggity traits, minions, and that sort of stuff

in the Post Game Report.

All non-permanent injuries are healed between games.

Also all ammunition, Power Points, and other expendable

commodities are replenished (bring this up with your next

Boss so they may account for clams spent replenishing your

supply).
