The UWA Centre for English Language Teaching hosts test centres for the internationally recognised IELTS and TOEFL examinations.

General English classes are for learners who wish to improve their ability to communicate in English. These classes are also a pathway to all other English language programs at UWA. In five-week modules, students practise reading and listening while developing the skills to write and speak clearly and coherently to convey their message with confidence.

Business English

Business English classes are for learners who are interested in the English language of business and employment. Each five-week module focuses on business topics of interest to students such as tourism, marketing and international business. Business English helps learners to use business vocabulary, listen and read in business situations, and write reports, letters and other forms of business communication. Through Business English, students develop the ability to communicate effectively in business and social settings as well as their knowledge of cross-cultural business practices.

English for Academic Purposes

Length of course: From 5 to 45 weeksIntake period: 9 intakes each yearMode of study: 20 hours per weekLevels offered: Upper-intermediate to advanced

English for Academic Purposes classes are for learners who want to develop their English language ability in preparation for tertiary studies in an English-speaking country. In five-week teaching modules, learners develop listening and note-taking skills, seminar and presentation skills together with academic reading and writing skills. Students learn library search skills and develop their proficiency in using information technology. They also learn to adapt to the academic culture of Australian tertiary institutions.

The UWA Centre for English Language Teaching offers accredited English language programs in General English, Business English and English for Academic Purposes, as well as preparation for internationally recognised examinations such as Cambridge, IELTS, TOEFL and TOEIC. Choosing the best course for you will depend on your goals and your level of language ability. UWA CELT offers different courses from beginner to advanced to help you develop your language proficiency. So, choosing a program is about what you are hoping to achieve whilst studying at UWA CELT.

IELTS Examination Preparation

Levels offered: Upper-intermediate

The UWA Centre for English Language Teaching delivers preparation courses for the internationally recognised International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination. There are five terms per year for the intensive 20-hour per week course. In addition, UWA CELT delivers part-time IELTS workshops throughout the year. Students wishing to take the IELTS test will be able to register and sit the exam at the UWA IELTS Test Centre.

Cambridge Examination Preparation

Length of course: 10 weeksIntake period: 3 intakes each yearMode of study: 20 hours per weekLevels offered: Intermediate to advanced

The UWA Centre for English Language Teaching offers preparation courses for the internationally recognised Cambridge English language examinations. There are three Cambridge terms per year, prior to examinations in March, June and December. UWA CELT prepares students for the Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), for students at a pre-advanced level, First Certificate in English (FCE), for students at the upper-intermediate level and Preliminary English Test (PET) for intermediate students

Courses and Programs

participants tend to stay together

Study Tours and Customised Courses

UWA CELT has extensive experience in the planning and delivery of intensive English language courses. These individually tailored programs are for groups of participants from high schools, university faculties, corporations, government and cultural bodies. The programs vary in duration from four days to 12 weeks and generally fall into one of three types: English + Australian Culture, English for Special Purposes and TESOL Professional Development. UWA CELT has designed and delivered English for Special Purposes courses with a focus on discipline areas such as engineering, medicine and management, amongst others. Customised programs can be offered throughout the academic year and delivered across all levels of English proficiency.

Afternoon program

UWA English language programs focus on the very highest quality teaching and learning with a high degree of action and interaction...it’s all about having very serious fun!

The UWA Centre for English Language Teaching runs dual timetables for mainstream programs, including General English, Business English, English for Academic Purposes, and Cambridge and IELTS Examination Preparation. Students will either study a morning program from 8.45am to 1pm, or an afternoon program from 1.15pm to 5.30pm. Students do not need to identify which timetable (in the 20-hour option) they would like to enrol in. The Centre will place students in the most appropriate timetable based on their level of English and general demand.

Students unable to meet the Bridging Course entry requirements have the option of improving their English competency by starting with a General English, or English for Academic Purposes course at UWA CELT.

An alternative pathway for university entrance is also available through our English for Academic Purposes program, together with preparation for the IELTS or TOEFL examination.

Whilst it is a structured course with an underlying pedagogy, English for Academic Purposes, which is offered in five-week modules, is modified every term to meet the needs of the class group.

By accommodating itself in this way to the knowledge and ability of its students, this course offers a highly supportive way to develop academic skills and English language ability. This focus on student needs incorporates assessment of achievements according to the composition of each class. For this reason, students choosing to study in English for Academic Purposes must also sit for an IELTS or internet-based TOEFL examination.

The most common pathway is via CELT’s Academic English and Study Skills Bridging Course, (Bridging Course) which has direct entry into tertiary studies at the University. This course is best for students who meet the Bridging Course’s entry standards and who can enrol for 10 or 20 weeks of intensive study. The other route to tertiary studies at the University is through English for Academic Purposes in combination with an IELTS or TOEFL examination. This pathway is for students who do not qualify for the Bridging Course or for students who only need to study for five, not 20 or even 10 weeks.

The UWA Centre for English Language Teaching offers two ways, or pathways to improve English language proficiency to the level required by the University for entry into its undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

UWA CELT’s Bridging Course has been granted NEAS Premium Product Endorsement.

The program is also suitable for students with unconditional entry into UWA who would like to further develop their language ability and confidence before commencing their tertiary studies.

A 70% pass in the Bridging Course meets the University’s English language requirement for most under- and post-graduate courses. However, some courses at UWA have higher entry requirements, for instance:

• Master of Business Administration (Flexible and full-time) require an overall 75% with no skill below 70%

• All Faculty of Law courses require an overall 85%

The Bridging Course will help students to:

• Improve their English language skills to the level required by UWA

Academic English and Study Skills Bridging Course

If entry requirements for tertiary courses are higher than 6.5 and nothing below 6.0, then entry into the 10-week Bridging Course will be no less than 0.5 lower for each individual band and for the overall score. Finding a home away from home

UWA CELT can help you arrange your accommodation, including in homestay, and demi-pair (working part-time for a family while you study).

Living with a familyHomestay accommodation This accommodation is best for students who want to experience Australian family life and have the support of an English speaking family. Homestay families are located throughout the metropolitan area and students may need to take public transport to UWA. Students share meals and facilities with the host family but have their own private bedroom.

Working part-time for a family while you studyDemi-pair programThe demi-pair program allows students to combine full-time study with work as an Au Pair. Students typically work for three hours per evening from Monday to Friday in exchange for homestay accommodation with full board. Applicants for demi-pair must be at least 20 years old (exceptions will be made for 18 and 19 year olds if they hold a recognised nanny qualification) and have at least a pre-intermediate level of English. Placements are for a minimum of three months and are available to students travelling on either a student or working holiday visa.

The Centre will process your application and will send you a letter of offer and acceptance documents. The offer letter will include an invoice for your course, and other applicable fees (including accommodation if requested, and Overseas Student Health Cover if you are applying for a student visa).

You will be required to make your own travel and student visa arrangements. UWA CELT’s overseas representatives will also be able to help you with these arrangements if you need any additional advice or assistance. Students arriving on a tourist or working holiday visa are advised to arrange their own health insurance cover prior to travel. All students are recommended to purchase private travel insurance to cover their personal belongings for the duration of their study and any extended time in Australia.
