The minister spoke during the Mount Frere Department of Education’s stakeholders meeting at the Mount Frere town hall last week Wednesday. She said the challenge of lack of teachers which other (viable) schools were faced with was being addressed by the Department of Ba- sic Education in conjunction with the EC Pro- vincial Department of Education. She said her department was in the process of consolidating unviable schools in rural are- as in order to address the problem of other (vi- able) schools which are operating without teachers. She said that while most schools com- plained about the problem of a lack of teach- ers, the actual problem was the fact that teachers were placed in unviable schools. “All small schools need to be closed down and the children from those schools must be taken to viable schools.” She said in the Eastern Cape especially there are a lot of unviable schools with many teachers who should rather be placed in schools where they are needed. “In a school with 50 learners you need one teacher since the Financing Model of the school is according to learner numbers. In ac- tual cases a school with fewer than 125 learners should be closed down.” According to Motshekga they realise that in some areas it would be hard to close down schools as they were built by community members. She said, however, that they would not be going there to destroy the buildings, but if the number of learners is small they would have to take them to other schools. The buildings would remain in the area for the community to use. She also called on stakeholders and the community, as well as the leadership from the areas, to work with the department and assist and provide guidance to the depart- ment of education. The project, which is funded by the De- velopment Bank of South Africa (DBSA), will cater for 1 832 houses. It was launched last week Wednesday at Lokwe Junior Sec- ondary School in Ntabankulu. The launch of the project brought joy to the people of wards 7, 9, 12, 13, 14 and 18 after many years of waiting for electricity in their homes. On the same day of the launch, destitute families were also hand- ed food parcels by the municipality. Ntabankulu Local Municipality mayor, Vusi Mgoduka, announced that the project of installing electricity in homes in these wards “will start soon and in no time peo- ple will be able to simply press a button to bring light in their homes”. Local people will also be able to benefit from jobs that will be created during the project. Mayor Mgoduka said it was the mandate of the municipality to deliver services to the communities they serve and with the launch of the electrification project they were adhering to that mandate. “This is not the only project that is hap- pening in Ntabankulu. There are other pro- jects which are currently being implement- ed and which are funded by the Municipal Infrastructure Grant. “These include the top of the range Nta- bankulu Multi-purpose Centre, the Ntaban- kulu Landfill site, the Mhlonyaneni Sport Field and the rehabilitation of the Sihlo- nyaneni access road,” said Mayor Mgod- uka. He said they had also received funding from the Provincial Teasury to fix Ntaban- kulu internal roads to the tune of R40 mil- lion. Another project in the pipeline is the con- struction of the Macwerheni sub-station in the April 2015/16 financial year as per ar- rangement with Eskom. MTHATHA-born Dj Stax released his latestalbum lsquoThe Beginningsrsquo in December lastyear This deep and soulful house music al-bum is the first ever house music album tobe released by a record label based in Mthat-ha The album features international and alsolocal artists Express reporter AYANDAMILLISA MADIKIZELA met up with thisson of the soul who now has his own recordlabel based in Mthatha

You evolved from being just a clubber toDJ eventually becoming a producer anda mentor Tell me how all this happened

Irsquove been a DJ since 1998 and I became a pro-ducer in 2009 after I was pursued by many DJswho noticed that I had a good ear for musicI was introduced to music production around2006 and then started to take that side ofthings seriously

Is there a defining moment that trig-gered you to become a producer

When Culoe De Song released his debut al-bum in 2009 I got inspired and decided to takemy music production seriously havingknown Culoe De Song for quite a while

Where do you get your inspiration foryour arrangements

I draw my inspiration from any good musiccomposition I listen to almost every genre ofmusic Deep house had always been the wayfor me and that is the sound that defines whoI am musically

Tell us about your music label and howyou are using it to promote local talent

My label is called iTouch Recordings andmy mission is to give our local artists a plat-form to be able to compete with the best inthe game I normally encourage them to keepworking smart in order for them to get theattention they deserve Irsquom currently work-ing with a number of artists locally with theaim of releasing their material digitally Irsquomalways open to give advice and help with therecordings

Where do you rate Eastern Cape on a na-tional scale when it comes to clubbingDJs and producing dance music

The Eastern Cape is one of the rich provin-ces in terms of music but one of the challen-ges we are facing is artists leaving the prov-ince and going to Gauteng for better opportu-nities This is due to a lack of support - be itfrom municipalities or government depart-ments I have made numerous attempts to in-volve the OR Tambo Municipality King Sa-batha Dalindyebo Municipality and the De-partment of Sport Recreation Arts andCulture (Mthatha) but they showed no inter-est in supporting initiatives that promote ourarts and culture They have their own peoplethat they prefer but those people donrsquot evencontribute to the love GDP boost These arethe kinds of challenges that I have experi-

enced but that wonrsquot stop me from doingwhat I love

Do you have any releases planned inthe near future Do you want to expandyour label

I have a lot of projects lined up for releasebut Irsquom not in a hurry because I believe inquality more than quantity The big projectthat Irsquom focusing on now is an album byMpeshnyk (Mpendulo Calaza) one the bestproducers in SA right now and it will be outin June Irsquom also looking at expanding thelabel and venturing into the hip hop marketas well and signing more artists

Where can people find your studioyour CDrsquos and your music online

My studio is located at Kwezi Townshipand people can call on 0739928095 for anybusiness related matters My album is avail-able at Musica countywide including Bot-swana and Namibia People in Mthatha canalso call the number provided if they wantto buy the cd or they can get it Musica atMthatha Plaza The title is DJ Stax - TheNew Beginnings

THE defending champions of the Safa SABLeague Coastal Stream 2010 Storm Break-ers beat AmaMpondo United FC by 1-0 at theNew Rest Stadium in Lusikisiki last Sunday

But because the game was played underprotest the result could change pending thedecision of the SAFA committee that will betasked with investigating the merits of thecase

The protest was launched after StormBreakers used as substitute MawethuNhlokwana a player who had played forAma-Mpondo last season He left but wasnot given clearance by the club

AmaMpondo captain Lethu Simayi con-firmed that Mawethu was a player they didnot give a clearance to He had used a differ-ent name ldquoMawethu was still their playeras he was not given clearance to play for an-other teamrdquo he said

The game between the two teams StormBreakers and AmaMpondo was tough as onboth sides the defenders were closing thestrikers quickly not giving them enoughroom to shoot the ball

During the first half Storm Breakersrsquo goal-keeper worked overtime After seeing thatthe defenders were not giving them achance the AmaMpondo strikers startedshooting from outside the eighteen area boxand those shots were stopped by the goal-keeper

AmaMpondo only have themselves toblame as during the first half of the gamethey had excellent chances to score but theyfailed to capitalize on them

In the second half they were not given achance to do as they had done in the first halfas this time around Storm Breakers were allover their backline and midfielders ndash untilthe AmaMpondo captain when trying tocontrol the ball stepped on the foot of theBreakers player and the referee gave Break-ers a free kick

Storm Breakersrsquo defender Mlungisi shotthe ball which was outside the eighteen areastraight to the poles The AmaMpondo Unit-ed goalkeeper was unable to stop the shotwhich was too fast for him and which gavethem the lead

Towards the dying minutes of the game

AmaMpondo tried everything to get theequalizer but unfortunately the backline forthe Storm Breakers was equal to the task andprotected their lead

In another game that was played earlier onIqhayiya FC beat FCPV FC 3-0 All the goalswere scored during the first half Odwa Gang-alazana scored twice and Odidi Mbiyose once

Any last words for our readersI would like to urge the readers to support

the local artists in whatever way they canI would like to also urge people to buy myalbum because it is not about me but repre-sents Mthatha and Eastern Cape as whole

I would also like to thank Media24 for theopportunity to communicate with the mas-ses

We understand that if people are going towatch football at the grounds theywant to seefair play which the referees try by all meansto ensure

But what we heard when we were at NewRest Stadium last Sunday uttered by an oldman towards the referee who was officiatingthe game between AmaMpondo United and2010 Storm Breakers was unacceptable

The worst part was that it was an old manand at the grounds therewere also young chil-dren who had come to watch the game
