1.0 ABOUT US
UVIKIUTA is a Youth development Organization that values volunteerism as a tool for sustainable development.
The organization was established in 1983 to respond to the needs of young women and men to raise their living
standards through developing and enhancing social and economic capacities. UVIKIUTA’s mission is to
contribute in building communities that are self-reliant with ability address social and economic challenges
using available local resources. This is possible through providing holistic experience that broaden minds,
expand horizons and empower young people and their communities to realize their full potential as productive,
responsible and caring citizens.
UVIKIUTA is among of the Founder members of Eastern African voluntary service Network (EAVS-Network),
formally EAWA, Long term partner with Service Civil International (SCI), Partner with most members of ALLIANCE
and NVDA. We work also very close with Various Government Departments, United Nations Volunteer Program
(UNV), various local/ International higher learning institutions, Non-Government and Community based
organizations.

2.0 LONG & MEDIUM TERM VOLUNTEER PROJECTS
Long and medium term volunteer projects are a unique cross cultural experiences program that connects
people from around the world with local communities in Tanzania. The program offers a powerful vision built on
our belief that volunteers and local communities have a vital role to play in development and in building a more
just and sustainable world community. Long and medium term Volunteer (LMTV) projects offer the chance to
work as a volunteer, experience different cultures, meet people from different countries, learn new or improve
skills, take part in peace making and hands-on on various community development projects. A Long-term
Volunteer and/or Medium-term Volunteer position at UVIKIUTA is an exceptional option for people to gain
experience in service projects and obtain hands on understanding in world issues.
3.1 General Participation Conditions: Participants will be accepted in the program upon meeting the following
conditions:-
a. Application: Applications will be received only through sending organization (s) in the country of
applicants’ citizenship (8) weeks before the project start. Confirmation will base on the availability of
the placements.
b. Language: Official Languages of the program are English and Kiswahili. You do not need to be fluent
though in some specific projects will require English language skills.

5.0 Long and medium term volunteer project’s short descriptions

Name: Childhood education Country: Tanzania

Location: Mbande Min & Max age: 18-99
Project description: Childhood education project has been implemented in the area for five years now to
ensure that every child receives a good quality education and gains the skills and knowledge they need to thrive
achieve their desired life goals. The project is implemented in cooperation with pre-schools and children day
care centers in the community to build their capacity in supporting the children to access quality education.
Project activities: Volunteers will be assisting existing local teachers and staff at the Nurseries schools in
teaching English, math’s, writing and drawings; Playing various sports and games with Children; Preparing
various competitions; Teaching music; organizing excursions and educational trips with Children. Depending on
the skills and interest of the volunteers they might also requested to work on capacity development activities to
the local staff which might include English language skills improvement, sharing creative teaching
methodologies.
Food: To be provided for free at the host family and at the project. Food will not be available outside
designated project location.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated at the local host family in the community. Staying with a
host family is a great way to learn and understanding the culture. The host family will be able to introduce
volunteers to the nuances of life and the food and culture. Volunteers are expected to be part of the family and
not guest!
Location of the Project: Mbande is a community located in the outskirts of Dar es Salaam about 40km to the
South. It is a fast grown urban community with diversity of people from various societies of Tanzania. It is
accessible by public transport as well private. Basic facilities like shops, hospital and recreational facilities are
available.
Free time activities: Weekends will be free for volunteers to spend time with their host families. However there
is also a possibilities to visit places like Zanzibar and Bagamoyo historical towns, Wildlife safari), cultural and
eco-tourism activities (We can provide some tips and price quotes if needed).
Special Requirements: Potential volunteer for this project should be interested in working with children,
patient and committed, creative and flexible to work in an environment with limited resources, Be a good team
player, interest in Teaching and basic English language skills.
Language: The official working Language will be English. However you should have interest to learn the local
Language (Kiswahili). Optional language classes will be provided.

Location: Vigoa Min & Max age: 18-99
Project description: English language importance has been now recognized worldwide. The language is being
taught as a second language and as an official language for more than 80 Counties worldwide. It is considered
the most important language when it comes to studies, searching for jobs, business, traveling, etc. Each country
including Tanzania has its own National language spoken and understood by people in different regional
blocks. Some languages are spoken by millions of people, the others by just a few thousand people. In
recognition of this reality, UVIKIUTA Youth center has developed English Language program with the aim of
providing learning opportunity to economically disadvantaged members of the community to access free Basic
English language courses to enable them to access various business, education and employment opportunities.
Project activities: Volunteers will join the Community English classes at Youth center where various sessions
will be running for maximum 2 hours each. The main tasks will be delivering lessons to community classes with a
focus on practical use of English. Other tasks will be testing and grading students and find creative means to
encourage learners to practice their reading, writing and speaking English skills through group settings and
one- to one exercise.
Food: To be provided for free at the host family and at the project. Food will not be available outside
designated project location.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated at the local host family in the community. Staying with a
host family is a great way to learn and understanding the culture. The host family will be able to introduce
volunteers to the nuances of life and the food and culture. Volunteers are expected to be part of the family and
not guest!
Location of the Project: The Project will be hosted in Vigoa community located in the outskirts of Dar es
Salaam about 30km from Dar es Salaam city center. It has a beautiful landscape and natural attractions where
some wild animals (Monkeys, rabbits and birds) are still visible. It is accessible by public and private transport.
Convenient shops are available and there is signal for mobile phones where internet can be accessible as well.
Free time activities: Weekends will be free for volunteers to spend time with their host families. However there
is also a possibilities to visit places like Zanzibar and Bagamoyo historical towns, Wildlife safari), cultural and
eco-tourism activities (We can provide some tips and price quotes if needed).
Special Requirements: Commitment to treating learner with respect, Non-judgemental approach that values
different cultures, Good English language skills, Strong inter-personal skills, Interest in people and their stories,
open minded, flexible and ability to work under less supervision.

Name: Teaching Mathematics Country: Tanzania

Project description: In educational environment, mathematics has been often referred to a bridge of success or
failure for high school graduation and career. It is a fact that mathematics subject has become a pump rather
than filter in the pipeline of education system. Inadequate mathematics skills and understanding affects one’s
ability to make critically important educational, life, and career decisions. The results of National examinations in
Tanzania still indicating poor performance of students in Mathematic subject. The reasons and factors affecting
are many. This project is therefore aiming to contribute to the Secondary schools mathematics examination
results for better career and future.
Project activities: Volunteers will join existing local school teacher to teach Mathematics for secondary school
students (13-18 years range). Various classes and on different levels will be running every day following the
National curriculum. Volunteers will be provided with induction seminar to be familiar with the system before
starting the assignment. A part from working with the school; remedial classes for mathematics will be
organized at the community Youth center in the evening to support slow learners or Students with learning
difficulties in various schools.
Food: To be provided for free at the host family and at the project. Food will not be available outside
designated project location.

Project description: Development education is a creative approach hoping to bringing about change in our
society.it is learning process based on the universal values of tolerance, solidarity, equality, justice, inclusion, co-
operation and non-violence. The process begins with raising awareness of global challenges such as poverty or
the inequalities caused by the uneven distribution of resources, environmental degradation, violent conflicts or
human rights, thus creating deeper understanding of the complexity of the underlying causes. It aims to change
people‘s attitudes by them reflecting on their own roles in the world. Development education motivates and
empowers people to become active, responsible global citizens. UVIKIUTA Youth centre is hosting a good
number of various programs that are direct or indirect connect to the development education. This project is
organised to provide support needed to realise the DE goals in the organisation.
Project activities: Volunteers are expected to be involved in providing support to the existing staff memebrs
and participants of other programs; volunteers will be involved in the following outlined activities:-Welcoming
participants, volunteers and users of the Youth center and provide information and instructions; Supporting the
orientation and training activities; Analyzing and summarizing of projects evaluations; Updating volunteers and
volunteer sending organizations data base; Documentation of stories and impact of volunteerism on volunteers,
projects and involved partners.; Providing assistance to the Center’s staff in cooking for the volunteers, cleaning
and other activities.

Location: Mikindani Min & Max age: 18-99
Project description: Salem is Pre and Primary School that is dedicated to provide quality education to children
of age between 2-14 years. The School is English medium that has a team of committed local and International
teachers who always strive to ensure that pupils get incomparable quality education to prepare them for the
future.
Project activities: Volunteers will be involved in the following activities:-Assisting existing teachers and staff in
teaching English language, mathematics, and other subjects which they might be comfortable with; assisting
staff to organized fun and learning activities for the children; teach and assist the students who are struggling
with English language (Slow learners) on their free time.
Food: To be provided for free at the host family and at the project. Food will not be available outside
designated project location.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated at the local host family in the community. Staying with a
host family is a great way to learn and understanding the culture. The host family will be able to introduce
volunteers to the nuances of life and the food and culture. Volunteers are expected to be part of the family and

Location of the Project: The Town is located on the coast of south-eastern Tanzania, along the rugged patch
of coastline that leads to the country’s border with Mozambique. It takes about 6+ to travel by bus from Dar es
Salaam. The town is fast growing due to discover of natural gas and other industries. It is accessible by road, air
and water transport from Dar es Salaam.
Free time activities: Weekends will be free for volunteers to spend time with their host families. However there
is also a possibility to visit places like Kilwa and Mikindani historical towns, Wildlife safari, cultural and eco-
tourism activities (We can provide some tips and price quotes if needed).
Special Requirements: Interested in teaching, working with children and young people. Commitment to
treating students and staff with respect, Non-judgemental approach that values different cultures, Interest in

Location: Bungoni Min & Max age: 18-99
Project description: Empowering girls and women is powerful. Today, we know it is the key to economic
growth, political stability, and social transformation. In recognizing this fact, the YWCA of Tanzania is running a
project that contributes to disadvantaged women and girls to gain economic independence through vocational
trainings, micro finance and entrepreneurship. This project reflects the sense that, women plays a key role in
family and community development, so once empowered and given opportunities they can effect significant
change in development.
Project activities: The project is implementing a number of activities including tailoring, designing, tie dye,
cooking classes, Small scale food processing and micro finance. Volunteers will have an opportunity to
participate in all those activities. Depending on the interest and skills of the volunteers; the women might need
training on basic computer application, basic business management skills, cooking and home management,
health and sanitation. Workshops of various women development issues in the community and globally will be
part of the project.
Food: To be provided for free at the host family and at the project. Food will not be available outside
designated project location.

Project description: Upendo kwanza (Love-first) is an education project under the YWCA of Tanzania. It
provides early child education and day care services for the children in the area to prepare them to join primary
schools. Kids who attend this school are expected to gain Spiritual growth and maturity, positive social
development, enhanced social skills, good character formation, improved academic performance, and
confidence. The school accommodates 100 children coming from the families around and the nearby
communities.
Project activities: Volunteers will be involved in the following activities:-Assisting in teaching English, math’s,

Name: Children with special Needs Country: Tanzania

Location: Bungoni Min & Max age: 18-99
Project description: Cerebral Palsy is usually caused by brain damage that occurs before or during a child's
birth, or during the first few years of life. Kids and teens with CP may have learning disabilities, visual
impairments, hearing problems, speech problems, drooling issues, and behavior problems. In recognition of this
fact and enabling CP children to access education, YWCA of Tanzania is running a school for children with
special needs mostly CP.
Project activities: Volunteers are expected to join existing teachers and local staff in taking care of the children,
playing and teaching them new games. Volunteers will also help the children during lunch time, helping them to
learn how to eat by themselves. Other activities will be helping them to make speech, exercise using special
available equipment, using mirrors, massage etc. Volunteers interested in this project will need to stay a
minimum of eight weeks, in order to follow up with the children’s progress.
Food: To be provided for free at the host family and at the project. Food will not be available outside
designated project location.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated at the local host family in the community. Staying with a
host family is a great way to learn and understanding the culture. The host family will be able to introduce

Location: Kisewe Min & Max age: 18-99
Project description: Child care and education is a project aiming to lay foundation for children’s learning and
holistic development. By involving Children in this project we develop the cognitive, physical, social and
emotional skills that they need to succeed in life. These early experiences are largely determined by among
other factor supportive family and community care practice learning opportunities. In responding to this need,
Cleopatra memorial school a local and community based project was established. The project accommodates up
to 70 children at a moment from the age of 3-7 years.
Project activities: Volunteers will assist the local project staff in four main areas: - Academic skills development:
- To assist Children to develop academic skills on literacy, mathematics, science and even social studies. Physical
Development: - To support the children to learn about moving - demonstrates basic gross motor skills,
demonstrates basic fine motor skills. Cognitive Development:- To assist children learn about the world-sustains
attention, understands how objects can be used, shows a beginning understanding of cause and effect, shows a
beginning understanding that things can be grouped, uses problem solving strategies, engages in pretend play.
Social development: - To support the children about self and others - trusts known, caring adults, regulates own
behavior, plays with other children, learns to be a member of a group, and uses personal care skills. Language
development: To learn about communicating, develops receptive language, develops expressive language,
participates in conversations, understands and uses words, enjoys books and being read to, shows an awareness
of pictures and print, experiments with drawing and writing.
Food: To be provided for free at the host family and at the project. Food will not be available outside
