CURRICULUM VITAE

Yama Issa was born on 9th of May 1985 in Kabul, Afghanistan. The first six years he grew up in Kabul. Because of the war, he and his family moved to the Netherlands. He grew up in ’s-Hertogenbosch and graduated from secondary school at the Koning Willem 1 College in 2003.

He studied medicine from 2003-2010 at the Radboud University Nijmegen. In his final year he joined the Dutch Adhesion Group as a student-assistent, headed by Prof. dr. H. van Goor at the department of surgery. In 2011 he joined the Dutch Pancreatitis Study Group, chaired by Prof. dr. H.G. Gooszen,

to do clinical research on chronic pancreatitis under supervision of Prof. dr. M.A. Boermeester in the Academic Medical Center, at the department of surgery. He coordinated the nationwide ESCAPE trial and the CARE Registry study. During his PhD research he trained to become a registered clinical epidemiologist under supervison of Prof. dr. K. Stonks and Prof. dr. M.A. Boermeester.

In September 2015 he started working as a surgical resident not in training at the Tergooi Hospital in Hilversum/Blaricum. In January 2017, he started his training in General Surgery at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam (Prof. dr. O.R.C. Busch), which will be continued at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (Dr. J.A. van der Hage), Tergooi Hospital in Hilversum (Dr. A.A.W. van Geloven) and Gelre Hospital in Apeldoorn (Dr. P. van Duijvendijk).

He is very passionated about the foundation Medical Committee Afghanistan Netherlands (MCAN), where he works as the treasurer since 2010. This committee consists of a multidisciplinary group of medical doctors living in the Netherlands who are committed to advancing and strengthening the level of health care in Afghanistan. Currently their projects focus on knowledge sharing.

Besides his work in the hospital, doing research and his work for the MCAN, he loves to participate in different sports. He lives together with his wife Mina and their daughter Zahra in Amsterdam.
