UV-CURING INKSARE DIFFERENT!

ComplementaryInformation

UV-curing screen printing inks have

been on the market for more than 40

years. The original offer of only very

few UV inks and UV varnishes for a

quite limited field of applications has

now developed into a very broad

range of products with a huge variety

of different applications.

Meantime UV inks can be used for quitethe same variety of substrates as solventbased inks. UV inks show many specificcharacteristics like weather resistance, resistance in thermo-forming appli-cations, high flexibility. They are resistantand tough, show high mechanical andchemical resistances. And all theseproperties can usually be obtained byprocessing these inks as one-componentsystem (without hardener).

But there are two significant differencesbetween solvent based and UV-curinginks. UV inks are usually delivered inready-to-print adjustment and can beprocessed right away. The seconddifference is their drying, called curing.Solvent based inks dry physically byevaporation of their evaporative ingre-dients (solvents). This is an automaticprocess starting right after printing byair contact. Quicker drying of solventbased inks can be achieved with hot airblowers.

UV inks don´t “air-dry”. They cure atlightning speed by a photochemicalpolymerisation reaction initiated by high-energy UV-radiation in the UV-curing unit. The liquid ink film quickly turns into astable plastic layer. In that process thespecific energy required for curing theUV ink, the energy power of the UV-curing unit itself as well as the belt speedused to pass the prints underneath theUV lamp interact. It´s part of the printer´sjob to carry out the correct adjustments.

General quality control also comprisesregular controls of the efficiency of UV-curing units. Such control is carried outusing corresponding measurementinstruments (”integrators”, “power-pucks”, “UV-disk” etc.) or measuringstrips (foils such as “Powerstrip”). Pleasenote that these measuring devices arenot standardized and thus the measuredvalue mJ/cm2 (milli joule per cm2) is notcomparable.

Similar to solvent inks, which - dependingon ink type - have different drying times,UV-curing screen inks show differentreactivity values; that is to say theyrequire different degrees of UV-energy

for curing. Inks for plastics are highlyreactive and only require low curingenergy. On the other hand inks for glass, coated substrates and metals needa high curing energy. As a guide in-formation we have listed the energyvalues of all UV inks described in thisbrochure (see reactivity), all measuredwith Kühnast UV-integrator.

Screen Printing Applications

UVX2The Elastic System

04

Reactivity: very high,approx. 150 mJ/cm2/*Especially for PVC

When printed with standard UV inks PVCself-adhesive foils often become verybrittle, especially if thick ink layers areapplied. In addition thinner rigid PVC foilsoften loose their toughness and elasticity.

UVX2 inks were especially developed toovercome such problems and to achievebest possible elasticity and flexibility onPVC materials. PVC adhesive foils printedwith UVX2 inks can easily be applied onuneven substrates with edges, slots andcreases.

UVX2 inks are highly reactive and cantherefore be processed on quick running

screen presses and large format multi-colour printing presses.

UVX2 prints are elastic and flexible andwill not become brittle later on. This inktype has been successfully used for theproduction of double-sided stickers, sometimes even with up to 10 ink layers!

As obliterating grey we offer the highlyopaque ink adjustment UVX2 60/688-HD,which is mixed with 3-4% of specialsilver B 79/13 and then printed withmedium fabrics - up to 100 threads / cm.

In addition UVX2 inks exhibit excellentlight fastness and weather resistanceand are therefore suitable for automotivedecorations as well as other outdoorapplications.

UVNThe Classic System

Reactivity: high,approx. 250 mJ/cm2/*For PVC

For many years this UV system has beensuccessfully used for printing of PVC-materials. Originally this system wasdeveloped and used for graphicapplications and later on increasinglyalso for roll label printing. Although UVXhas become first choice for specialapplications - mainly for PVC self adhesivefoils - UVN is still commonly used forthe originally intended applications asthe prints show good chemicalresistances. Such applications focus onrigid PVC and PVC fabric foils for banners.

UVN inks show a good outdoorresistance and a high reactivity, whichis slightly lower than that of UVX,however, still suitable for quick runningprinting presses.

In addition to the C-MIX-2000 andprocess colour shades UVN inks are alsoavailable in ready-to-print fluorescent andphosphorescent colour shades.

UVUThe Versatile System

Reactivity: very high, approx. 150 mJ/cm2/*Broad Range of Applications

Ink Range UVU has beenespecially developed forgraphic screen printers andtheir broad range of diffe-rent substrates.

UVU inks are especiallysuitable for printing onthermoplastics such asABS, polystyrene (PS), PVC(mainly rigid PVC). UVU inksare also suitable for paperand cardboard , po ly-carbonate (PC), PET-G andPP double wall sheets.

UVU inks are highly reactiveand quickly cure to form a hard, slightlybrittle ink film. They can be easilyprocessed on multi-colour printingpresses and quick running fullyautomatic cylinder presses. Evendouble-sided prints are stack proof.Prints also exhibit high light fastnessand weather resistance.

In graphic screen applications the oftenquite problematic substrate poly-propylene is mainly processed for doublewall sheets or rigid foils. After Coronatreatment this material can easily beprinted with suitable ink types.

UVPO has been especially developedfor the decoration of these PP substratesand can also be processed on multi-colour equipment.

Meantime these products are also oftenprinted with our ink type UVU. If,however, maximum adhesion combinedwith exceptional water resistance isrequired UVPO will still be your firstchoice.

The ink type exhibits medium outdoorresistance. Range of suitable substratesalso comprises polystyrene (PS) - mainlyhigh gloss PS types - and ABS,polycarbonate (PC) and various types ofacrylic glass (indoor applications).

*Energy values measured with Kühnast UV-integrator. Values are only guide values.

Reactivity: medium to high, approx. 300 mJ/cm2/*Broad Field of Applications

Musketeer MTR is a special ink systemsuitable for screen printing onto variousplastics. The printed parts are suitablefor subsequent thermo-forming (deepdrawing). Range of suitable substratescomprises thermoplastics such asrigid PVC, polystyrene, acrylic glass andPET-G.MTR prints exhibit medium outdoorresistance.

Reactivity: high, approx. 250 mJ/cm2/*Alternatively: Hardener UV/H, addition 5%For Polystyrene, Rigid PVC & More

Originally UVE inks were developed asa quick curing, tough and stack proof inkfor graphic screen printing ontopolystyrene (PS) and rigid PVC, mainlyfor processing on automatic one andmulti-colour printing presses. Meanwhilesuch applications are mainly carried outwith our UVU inks which are suited fora broader field of applications.

UVE inks are now commonly used forthe decoration of injection moulds (toys, front panels, housings), mainly forapplications requiring good adhesion, high scratch resistance or high chemicalresistances against cleaning agents, acids and alkaline solutions.

This ink range is suitable for medium-term outdoor use. As an alternative UVEinks can be processed with hardenerUV/H to obtain adhesion on difficultsubstrates (plastic compositions, pre-treated PP, aluminium) in individual cases.

UV-650018For Plastic Elements

Reactivity: high, approx. 200 mJ/cm2/*Tough and Resistant

UVPFor Particular Applications

Reactivity: medium,approx. 300 mJ/cm2/*Resistant and Versatile

UVP inks have been successfully usedfor many years. Owing to technicalprogress of recent developments of UVinks such as increased reactivity andspecialization UVP is now mainly usedfor difficult substrates, mostly form partsand housings made of polyolefin, co-polymers or coated housings.

UVP inks show a very good chemicalresistance and medium to good outdoorresistance.

Screen prints applied to plastic partssuch as writing utensils, front panels, polycarbonate or ABS housings oftenhave to meet very high demandsregarding mechanical and chemicalresistances. UV-650018 inks meet theserequirements. Thus this ink system isespecially suitable for technical screenapplications. UV-650018 is highlyreactive and shows a high degree ofcross-linkage and is therefore theappropriate ink system for inline printingor processing on multi-colour equipmentused for printing of pens. Although UV-650018 prints are mostly used indoorsthe ink is also suited for short tomedium-term outdoor applications.

Ink system 80UV is used for direct printing ofvarious hollow articles made of polyethylene (PE)and polypropylene (PP) such as cartridges, bottles, cans, tubes etc. Pre-treatment of PE and PP isessential for such applications. This system ismainly suited for rigid and semi-rigid types ofaforementioned materials. For plasticized/non-rigidmaterials we offer ink type UV-650061.

80UV is primarily processed as 1-component inkon quick running multi-colour presses for containerprinting. Intermediate drying (pinning) with UV-LEDsystems (395 nm) is also possible. For applicationsrequiring outstanding resistances 80UV can alsobe processed as 2-component ink, addition ofhardener UV/H 5%.

Base colours of this high gloss ink range are theC-MIX 2000 colours in LL-version, exhibiting amedium light fastness. Our data base “FormulaManagement for Packaging Printing” containsguide-formulations for Pantone PMS, HKS and RALcolours. Ink range 80UV is classified as lowmigration according to EUPIA Directive (exceptionN50). For details please refer to our product datasheet.

UV/K inks have also been successfully used formany years. Originally the system was developedand effectively used as marking ink for circuitboards, an application requiring exceptionalresistances against various chemicals.

Meanwhile possible applications of this systemalso comprise decoration of aluminium, stainlesssteel and lacquer-coated materials such asdecoration of front panels of white goods, backcovers of electronic items (DVD players etc.) andvarious type-plates.

For especially difficult and demanding applicationsand mostly to enhance adhesion properties UV/K

inks can also be processed as 2-component inkwith a 5% addition of hardener UV/H. On accountof the resins used for the formulation of UV/K thissystem is not recommended for medium or long-term outdoor use.

UVGS is an organic UV screen printing ink for directprinting on glass sheets. Depending on requirementsthis ink system can be processed in three differentways. If prints are to be used in a dry environmentUVGS can be processed without adhesion promoter. The resulting prints will show good adhesion andscratch resistance but no water resistance. Whenprocessed with 5% adhesion promoter UVGS/HSand possibly also with subsequent post-curing at140 C for a period of 20 minutes prints will exhibitgood water resistance.

Base colours of UVGS ink range are the C-MIX 2000colours. In addition we also offer special adjustmentssuch as milk glass effects, etch imitations, matttextures. On account of the resins used for theformulation of UVGS this system is not recommendedfor medium or long-term outdoor use.

09UV-curing inks offered by Coates Screen Inks GmbH are delivered in a ready-to-printadjustment. Generally addition of auxiliary agents/additives prior to processing is notnecessary.

Depending on specific requirements, special printing conditions etc. addition of certainauxiliary agents can be beneficial in some individual cases.

Coates Screen offers a range of auxiliary agents and additives for UV-curing inks. Theseadditives are used to adjust viscosity or increase reactivity if necessary. We also offer flowagents as well as hardeners for further enhancement of certain resistance properties.

Adjustment of Viscosity

Contrary to solvent based inks viscosity of UV-inkscan only be changed to a very limited extent.

Additive UV/V (Universal Reactive Thinner):Addition: 3 - max. 10%Reduces viscosity of UV inks (ink will becomethinner). Can be used in nearly all UV-inks (but not for MTR,and PDO).Additive UV/V is a clear, colour-less liquid withlow viscosity, non-yellowing.Reacts with the ink, does not evaporate.

Thickening Powder:Addition: 1 - max. 3%Increases viscosity and thixotropy of UV-inks (inkwill become thicker).Thickening Powder can be used in all UV inks.White, fine powderUse of an agitator to mix thickening powder intothe ink is recommended.

AUXILIARYAGENTS /ADDITIVES

Formulations of our UV-curing screen inks alreadycontain flow agents to achieve good substratewetting properties and surface flow. In someindividual cases, however, flow problems mayoccur. To solve these the following additives areavailable:

Additive UV/VM (flow agent):Addition: 1 - 2%Improves flow and slipping propertiesUV/VM can be used in all UV inks.UV/VM is a cloudy, whitish liquid with a lowviscosity, contains silicone.

Additive UV/N (wetting agent):Addition: 1 - 2%Improves wetting of substrate on difficult materials.UV/N can be used in all UV inks.UV/N is a clear, colourless liquid with a lowviscosity.

Flow Additives

Addition of photoinitiator solution may increasespeed of curing reaction (polymerisation) of UV-inks.

LAB-N 560700 (photoinitiator solution):Addition: 1 - 3 % (recommended), max.5 %LAB-N 560700 increases reactivity, especiallyreactivity of coloured inks.LAB-N 560700 can be used in all UV curing inktypes.LAB-N 560700 is a clear, slightly yellowish liquidof low viscosity, non-yellowing.

Increase of Reactivity

LAB-N 551564 (photoinitiator solution):Addition: 1 - max. 3 %. Highly effective!LAB-N 551564 increases reactivity, especially thatof coloured inks and opaque ink adjustments.LAB-N 551564 can be used in all UV inks.LAB-N 551564 is a clear, slightly yellowish liquidwith a medium viscosity.

Usually UV-curing inks are 1-component inks, which, depending on ink type result in high resistances. With solvent based screen inks you would require2-component inks to achieve similar resistancevalues.Alternative addition of hardener to some of our UVink types, however, will further increase these highresistances or enable printers to print on a broaderrange of substrates.

Additive UV/H (Hardener):Addition: 5% (= 20:1), pot life at room temperatureapprox. 6-8 h.Increases adhesion and resistances on variouscoated substrates and pre-treated polyolefines(PP/PE), sheet metal and stainless steel of ink typessuited for these applications.Reaction of hardener UV/H is completed within72 hours. Wait at least 24 hours before carryingout adhesion and resistance tests. Can be used in UVE, UV/K, 80UV.Additive UV/H is a clear, colourless liquid with ahigh viscosity.

Additive UVGS/HS(Adhesion Promoter for Glass)Addition: 5% (= 20:1), pot life at room temperatureapprox. 5 days.Increases water resistance on glass materials.UVGS/HS can only be used in UVGS.Additive UVGS/HS is a clear, colourless liquid witha low viscosity.

Additive SVC/H(Adhesion Promoter for Glass)Addition: 5% (= 20:1), pot life at room temperatureapprox. 6 - 8 h.SVC/H is necessary for processing SVC inks.Additive SVC/H is a clear, colourlessliquid with a low viscosity.
