FOR APPOINTMENT AS TELEGRAPH MESSENGER.

(Held on 2nd Not'cmber, 1907 : 327 Candidates Examined3 E following candidates were successful at the above

examination, and have thereby qualified for appoint-ment to the position of Telegraph Messenger at the placesunder which their names respectively appear.

The following should be noted : --(1) The names will remain on the Register of Qualified

Candidates for eighteen months, that is, untiland including 28th May, 1909, when they must,in accordance with the law, be removed therefrom.

(2) A candidate,though successful, cannot be appointedafter he attains his sixteenth birthday.

(3) A candidate passes this examination if he secures atleast half marks in Handwriting and in Spellingonly ; but those who have also gained half marksin Arithmetic at this examination will, if appointed,be eligible for promotion to a higher position inthe General Division without further examinationin these subjects.

(4) Those who have not secured at least 100 marks inArithmetic will be required to pass a furtherexamination, after appointment, in Handwriting,Spelling, and Arithmetic, in order to becomeeligible for promotion. Promotion examinationsare held annually.

151 Unless a Telegraph Messenger receives promotion toa higher position before reaching the age of 18years, he must retire from the Service on attainingthat age.

(6) Where two or more candidates secure the samenumber of marks, their order of merit is deter-mined by the number of marks obtained for (a)Arithmetic, and (b) Handwriting, and, wherethese numbers are also equal, then by ballot.

CADETSHIPS IN THE ROYAL NAVY.

THE following particulars are published for the infor-mation of parents who desire their sons to obtain

nominations for cadetships in the Royal Navy :The Commonwealth is granted eight nominations for

Cadetships in the Royal Navy annually.Application for nomination must be made to the

Governor - General or to the Governor of any State in theCommonwealth, and must be lodged before the 1st ofNovember of the year preceding that for which thenomination is desired.

Candidates must pass a qualifying examination in educa-tional subjects, which will be held in the capital of eachState. in the months of March, July, and November ofeach year.

Candidates at these examinations must not be less than12 years and 8 months nor more than 13 years of ageon the dates set forth hereunder :

Candidates must also pass a medical examination.If a nomination is approved and the candidate passes

A private allowance of ¿5o per annum is also re-quired to be made to cadets from thé expiration of theirperiod of training until they reach the rank of ActingSub Lieutenant.

FRESH Tenders, sealed and indorsed " Tender forConveyance of Mails," are invited, and will be re-

ceived at the office of the Deputy Postmaster- General,Perth, until noon on 'Tuesday, the loth December, 1907,for the conveyance of mails, as under, for a term of one,two, or three years, from the rst January, 1908, viz.:

To leave Southern Cross by Parker's-road ; thence toJacoletti Mine ; thence across to the Marvel LockMine; thence to the Meyer Never Mine, by thenew road ; thence to Spring Hill, vid McKenna'sBattery, a distance, approximately, of 40 miles,returning by the same route to the Never NeverMine ; thence by the new road to Southern Cross,calling at the chief centres en route, to deliverand collect correspondence from the letter -boxesthat may be erected on the road. Alternativelyweekly or fortnightly.

Tenderers must state how they propose to carry themails.

Where mails are conveyed by vehicle, the contractorwill be required to convey, without extra cost to the -De-partlìient, Parcels Post parcels up to eleven (i i) poundseach in weight, and Where carried on horseback or bycamel, Parcels Post parcels up to three (3) pounds eachin weight.

The arrival and departure of mails will be subject toinstructions from the Deputy Postmaster - General, Perth,and liable to alteration at any time during the period ofcontract.

Every tender must bear the boned fide signatures, dulyWitnessed, of the tenderer and of two responsible personswillisl_7 to become bound for the due fulfilment of thecontract in- a sum not exceeding the gross amount of thetender, for the whole period over which it extends.

Every tender must be accompanied by the written con-sent, duly witnessed, of persons proposed as bondsmen,to execute the necessary bond for the due performance ofthe contract in the event of such tender being accepted.

Tenders must be accompanied, in cases where theamount thereof exceeds .45o per annum, by a depositequal to 5 per centum on the annual amount of such ten-der up to ,m,000, and 22 per centum on any furtheramount beyond J'r,000, such deposit to be in cash or inthe form of a cheque indorsed by the manager of thebank upon which it is drawn, or a bank draft made pay-able to the Receiver, Public Moneys, General l.'ost Office,Perth.

White labour only roust be employed in the conveyanceof mails.

'l'he rate of Nyages paid by the contractor and the work-ing conditions shall be those recognised in the localityin which the work is performed.

The Postmaster- General reserves the right of terminat-ing the contract at any time by giving three months'notice to the contractor.

Special forms of tender, with conditions attached, mayhe obtained gratuitously upon application to the Dcput--Postmaster- General, Pcrlh, or at any Post Office in theState, and no tender will be entertained' to less on theprescribed form.

Contractors who have carried out a contract satisfac-torily shall, when again tendering for a service that theyare performing at the date of tendering, if all other con-ditions are equal, be allowed a preference over other ten -derers to the extent of ç per centum.
