A Message from our President

Dear Congregation,

June is the last month of our Fellowship fiscal year. July is a new beginning with a new commitment for giving, a new time for examining our budget, some new Board of Directors and a new president, and a worthy part of the year to start afresh.

June 11 is our annual membership meeting, immediately follow-ing our morning service. A lovely meal will be served, provided by the Fellowship. Please plan to attend. Your input and voting is important. If you cannot attend, we hope you will provide a voting proxy to represent you, using either a form provided at the Fellowship, or by sending that information in an email to the administrator.

The Program Committee of our Fellowship chooses a theme for each month’s service, as a topic for consideration and conversa-tion. The theme word for June is DOUBT. If ever there is a word that stamps on my heart what my UU-ism means to me, it is this word. Follow along as I share the words of UU Robert Weston:

Cherish your Doubts

Cherish your doubts, for doubt is the attendant of truth. Doubt is the key to the door of knowledge; it is the servant of discovery. A belief which may not be questioned binds us to error, for there

is incompleteness and imperfection in every belief. Doubt is the touchstone of truth; it is an acid which eats away the

false. Let no one fear for the truth, that doubt may consume it; for

doubt is a testing of belief. The truth stands boldly and unafraid; it is not shaken by the

testing: For truth, if it be truth, arises from each testing strong, more secure. Those that would silence doubt are filled with fear; their houses

are built on shifting sands. But those who fear not doubt, and know its use, are founded on

rock. They shall walk in the light of growing knowledge; the work of

their hands shall endure. Therefore let us not fear doubt, but let us rejoice in its help: It is to the wise as a staff to the blind; doubt is the attendant of

truth. Sincerely,

Larry Janzen

YOU TOO can host a Supper Circle! Use the sign-up sheets on the foyer

bulletin board.

If you are interested in hosting a dinner at your home (or at UU if you don’t have room at home), sign up today. You can choose how many people you’d like to invite, may choose a theme if you wish, and everyone brings a dish to share. Plenty of upcoming months are available! This is a wonderful way to get to know oth-er UUs in a smaller setting, and some great friendships have grown from these gatherings. Both hosting and attending are open to our members and friends, so don’t hold back.

Want more news from UUA? The UU Bulletin is available by email from the Unitarian Universalist Association. This monthly e-publication is full of information about issues and activities of our denomination. You can subscribe at:

UU Galveston Annual Business Meeting Sunday, June 11

This annual business meeting of UU Galveston will include a catered lunch. We hope that all members attend if possible, or appoint a proxy to vote for them for board members and officers, and approve the proposed 2017-2018 Fellowship budget. If you will be unable to attend, please complete a proxy form (available at the Fellowship) or appoint a proxy by sending an email to the Administrator with the name of the person you appoint to vote on your behalf.

Members are encouraged to go to the church website at uugalveston.org and review the proposed amendments to the UUFG bylaws. The proposed changes include a requirement that the Board Members physically meet once a month, allow for additional meetings as needed through electronic means, and allow for an additional two-year tenure for the Secretary and Treasurer positions, as needed.

These amendments are proposed to reflect how the Board already does business, clarify required meetings, and include the ability to communicate by email and texting. Changes to the bylaws are required to be voted on by the membership, which will occur at the upcoming Annual Meeting in June. If you have comments or concerns, please contact any Board Member or email the administrator."

We need your help with our Sunday services! The Facilitator's role is critical to a successful Sunday wor-ship service. Facilitating is an opportunity for you to con-tribute to our Fellowship in a meaningful way. If you are interested in becoming a UU Facilitator, please plan to attend a brief training session right after our Sunday service on June 4. Please let Cheryl Henry know if you would like to attend the training session.

June Compassionate Collection to Benefit Hospice Care Team

The compassionate collection for Communities in Schools raised $333.00.

Thanks to all for your generosity.

Hospice Care Team, Inc. is the June recipient of our Compas-

sionate Offering. The HCT is a not-for-profit, community-

based, and community-supported organization serving resi-

dents in Galveston and Brazoria counties. The hospice team

specializes in providing health care services for people with a

terminal illness and support for the patients' loved ones.

These highly qualified professionals focus on meeting the

physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patients and

families who are coping with a life-limiting illness that is no

longer responding to aggressive curative therapies. The goal

of hospice care is to allow the patient and family to direct the

palliative or comfort care. They, along with their own physi-

cian and the expert team of hospice nurses, social workers,

home health aides, spiritual advisors and trained volunteers,

participate in the person's care. The team focuses on provid-

ing comfort and pain relief, helping each person to live as

fully as possible.

More information about the HCT can be found on their web-

site, www.hospicecareteam.org.

The “Bowlers” are back in action!

The “Bowlers” are a group of people who meet weekly during the year to create handmade bowls to feature at the “Empty Bowl” fundraiser for Jesse Tree each spring. Weekly meetings will start again on Wednesday, June 7, at 5:00pm.

This is a fun and creative group and you do not need to be an expert to participate, and can learn by doing. Be part of this important social action outreach of UU Galveston. If interest-ed, talk with Madeleine Baker or email her at [email protected].

It’s easy to sign up for your preferred date to provide flowers.

The sign-up form is located on the

bulletin board in the foyer.

Flowers can be of any type, from any

source, and for any occasion!
