Welcome Message to New and Returning Students from the Acting President and ProvostIt gives me great pleasure to warmly welcome all new and returning students across the greens of UTT’s nine (9) Teaching campuses...

As we cross the threshold of each Campus, we acknowledge the confl icts which the rights of passage that life at a University brings as we move from one stage of our emotional and cognitive development into more elaborate patterns of our life-worlds. But more than that, we are reminded that the intellectual life of the university is itself the perpetual confl ict between the constellation of beliefs, practices, tools and techniques that are cherished by clusters of scholars within our community and the free inquiry of the human spirit.

Our campuses have come alive with an elevated sense of excitement as students; eager, electrifi ed and empowered to learn, have breathed new life into the hallways of UTT. Indeed, this is the hallmark of any great University, as its students are the true testament of its Relevance to society. The Relationships that you foster during the course of your journey at UTT, both with your professors and with your peers, will determine the extent to which your stay with us will truly encompass a holistic University experience. In this regard, I encourage you to get to know your classmates as these bonds will serve to sustain you for the duration of your study at UTT and will allow you to fl ourish in veracity and freedom.

There is no development outside of freedom: freedom which will allow for the unfolding of your capabilities and talents. ‘Economic Citizenship’ is therefore our principal objective. Do not lose sight of the fact that you are part of an ensemble team; a team which is all the better for your input and involvement in UTT’s Student Guild or in areas of debate, sport or community activism. Here you are part of a greater student body who want to make a difference. My wish for you is that you experience the full spectrum of opportunities that UTT has to offer.

Remember that there is no disconnect between the idea of a university grounded on the autonomy of

reason and guided by self-criticism. One of the main functions of the university is to produce technicians-of-state, that is, men and women of affairs.

As you move into this new phase of your academic career, remember to keep your commitments to school and family. Practice proper time-management skills and be prepared for your classes. Explore unshaped territories by broaching questions and offering your own opinions while inside and outside of the classroom. Your UTT experience should be the catalyst to propel you from being a passive observer to that of an interactive learner.

Permit me to also remind you that a good plan will go a long way. A plan will, to be sure, make some provision for your future. It will ensure against certain broad contingencies and general means will be provided for, but the details will be fi lled in gradually as information arises and as your needs and wants are discovered with greater clarity. Indeed, one principle of rational choice is that of postponement: if in the future you plan to do one of several things but remain unsure which, other things being equal, plan now so that these alternatives are both kept open. A rational plan is therefore not a detailed blue print for action but a hierarchy of plans, with more specifi c subplans being fi lled in at the appropriate time. Thus, planning is in part scheduling. Let us get to work with seriousness and let our watchwords this semester be

Talent, Technology and Tolerance.

In closing, I challenge you to take advantage of the unique opportunities which are inherent at UTT; opportunities for breakthroughs in Research and for capacity development. Again, I say, “Welcome to the 2012/2013 Academic Year”.

UTT’s re-branded campuses are all adorned with depictions of the Moriche Palm. Some persons may however ask, “Why the Moriche”? For the answer to this question, one must fi rst look at the physical attributes and geographical nature of the Moriche Palm as it relates to Trinidad and Tobago.

The Moriche Palm, also known as the “Tree of Life”, is integral to the natural setting of Tamana InTech

Park, the Signature Complex and Main campus of The University of Trinidad and Tobago. UTT, in

its efforts to sustain the natural environment of the Tamana site, has sought to preserve

much of the Moriche Palm which is resident locally in this region of the country. The Moriche Palm, through the years of UTT’s existence, has therefore taken on symbolic meaning as both students and staff continue to identify with it on a daily basis.

The Moriche Palm is not only seen on the walls of UTT’s campuses, but overt references to the Palm are evident throughout the University. The University’s graduation gowns are embellished with a replica of the Moriche Palm, so too does this emblem appear on the University’s branded and promotional items. The University’s offi cial Newsletter also bears the name of this majestic Palm. Like the growth of the Moriche Palm, The University of Trinidad and Tobago has experienced tremendous expansion in its eight years of operation; offering quality tertiary education and training to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

Independence Message from UTT’s Student Guild President

In commemoration of our nation’s 50th Anniversary, it is only fitting that we, students of the National University, make our mark upon history. The University of Trinidad and Tobago, an institution young in age, but nonetheless significant among its tertiary counterparts, is home to a rich culture that is characterised by a people as diverse as our twin island republic.

I need only to remind you that we are a blessed and privileged people: We have seen, only a few months ago, what free and independent men, women, and children of honourable intentions were able to accomplish having been motivated, driven, and sustained by a common interest that outranked and outweighed the sum total of their individual aspirations. Among our people [and by extension the Americas], we have always been regarded as “trendsetters” and “trailblazers”.

Our knowledge and competence have benefitted not just our own nation but numerous others, all the while we have remained humble and have personified unparalleled respect and appreciation for the individualised and inalienable rights, freedoms, differences and humanity of others. However, we are once again poised for the ushering in of a new era of servant-leadership: Aung San Suu kyi (Burmese dissident and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate) in her message to the International Conference on Universal Human Rights and Human Values (2000) stated that:

“Few rational human beings anywhere, regardless of their race, religion, or culture would deny the supreme value of peace, justice, and freedom in their positive, vigorous aspects. It is now widely seen that peace should be more than the mere absence of war; it should be a positive force that counters violence as a mean of resolving the problems of human society. Justice should not only aim at controlling the negative traits in human nature. It should work to promote a sense of fairness, compassion, and universal brotherhood. Freedom should be more than a lack of shackles. It should mean an environment where the right to develop one’s own potential, without curbing that of others, can be exercised without fear. “

As we ambitiously aspire to make our mark upon the pages of our history, and rightly so, I adjure us to remain true to our “founding documents”, The Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, as we aspire to live out our noblest profession: “Here every creed and race find an equal place, and may God bless our nation.”

UTT’s Corinth Students Pledge Commitment in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS The U.S. Embassy recently presented a President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) grant in the sum of US$10,000 to the UTT Corinth Campus to benefit in the fight against HIV/AIDS. UTT Corinth and Valsayn campuses, home to the Learning Cognition and Education department of UTT, will create a team of students who will provide basic HIV/AIDS services, specialising in testing. At-risk women will also be taught skills relating to the flower industry, which should impact their economic standing.

PEPFAR is the U.S. Government’s initiative to help save the lives of those suffering from HIV/AIDS around the world. This historic commitment is the largest by any nation to combat a single disease internationally, and PEPFAR investments also help alleviate suffering from other diseases across the global health spectrum. UTT is pleased to be affiliated with such an initiative as its students once again demonstrate what it truly means to be “future global leaders”.

UTT Receives Chartered Engineering Status and Specialised Accreditation from Energy Institute, UKThe University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) has successfully explored uncharted territory by becoming the first institution in Trinidad and Tobago, and the Caribbean region, to receive full Chartered Engineering status by the Energy Institute, UK, for its Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Petroleum Engineering Undergraduate degree.

Dr. Fazal Ali, Acting President and Provost of UTT, commended the students and staff of UTT on this accomplishment. According to Dr. Ali, “This is a historic achievement in the life of UTT and it comes at a most opportune time; a time when our country celebrates our recent Olympic achievements and our milestone 50th Anniversary of Independence”

UTT continues to break new ground with the M.Eng. degree which is awarded to students who complete an extended four-year period of full-time study, subsequent to successful completion of UTT’s Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc.) degree. Chartered Engineering status ensures that UTT’s graduates have a recognisable, international engineering qualification which adequately distinguishes and sets them apart.

UTT’s programmes which have received Accreditation by the Energy Institute, UK:

↗ Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) Petroleum Engineering

Accredited for Partial Chartered Engineering (CEng) status

↗ Master of Engineering (MEng) Petroleum Engineering Accredited for CEng

↗ MSc Reservoir Engineering (FT/PT)

Accredited for Further Learning for CEng

↗ MSc Petroleum Engineering Accredited for Further Learning for CEng

In March 2012, an assessment panel from the Energy Institute, UK visited the Petroleum Engineering Department at the UTT Point Lisas…The Energy Campus to assess UTT’s Engineering programme offerings.

The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) is the beneficiary of a donation from Mr. Ali Khan, former General Manager of Hilton Trinidad & Conference Centre, of some 350 books in diverse genres ranging from Leadership and Management to History, Philosophy and the Culinary Arts. Mr. Khan’s personal donation was sparked by a need to, “Donate [these books] to an Institution where young people could benefit and encourage others to read.”

He took the opportunity to challenge other persons with impressive literary archives to donate in the future as this one act can serve a two-fold purpose by benefitting future generations and giving back to society at the same time. Mr. Khan’s collection was amassed over a period of forty years and the donation was made in its entirety to UTT so as to retain the integrity of the collection. These books will be catalogued and available to staff and students of UTT through the University’s Campus libraries.

The handover was witnessed by UTT’s Acting President and Provost Dr. Fazal Ali, as well as several Members of UTT’s Board of Governors. Dr. Ali expressed UTT’s pleasure at receiving such a unique collection as its inclusion will be a welcome addition to UTT’s libraries.

UTT’s Associate Professor, Dr. Prahalad Sooknanan, is the author of several books, including: “Perceptions and Attitudes in Diffusion of Innovations”; a book which discusses the role of educators in the successful implementation of computers in the school environment. He is the co-author of, “Intercultural Communication- Building a Global Community”, and has co-edited “Information Technology, Development, and Social Change” which explores the role of innovative technology in national growth.

Dr. Sooknanan continues to research as well as to lecture in the sphere of Communication Studies.

Congratulations to UTT’s very own Benny Gomes, Associate Professor-Lighting Design and Programme Leader at UTT’s Academy for the Performing Arts, who provided production management for the opening ceremony of the recently concluded London 2012 Olympic Games. Benny teaches all courses related to Lighting Design at UTT.

This is not the first occasion whereby Benny loaned his expertise at this prestigious international stage. He also provided production management at the Vancouver and Beijing Olympic Games in 2010 and 2008 respectively. Benny’s lighting credits also include the Inauguration Ceremony of President of the United States of America, Barrack Obama and the Opening Ceremonies for the Fifth Summit of the Americas and Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2009, Port-of-Spain in 2009.
