17704 Property Development Finance – Handout

By: David Litting ([email protected] / 95143390)(please contact me at any time for research assistance)

Topic: Researching Property Development Finance

Library Website url: www.lib.uts.edu.au

Library Resources for you to consider:

The Catalogue: Is a searchable list of all the things that UTS library owns or subscribes to. It’s useful for finding the location of books, dvd’s and for linking into online journals.

Databases: Databases are specialised search engines that look for articles from across a wide range of journals. You can access lists of databases that are relevant to Property Development through the ‘find databases’ box on the home page, which is in the ‘quick links’ area:

Suggested Databases: ScienceDirect / ABI Inform / Business Source Premier

All three of these databases are fantastic resources for journal articles about the business aspects of property financing, trends in the property industry, new theoretical models and ideas to go with financing and investment, and more. These databases are based overseas but have Australian content

Pictured – Business Source Premier

ScienceDirect is all full text and all peer-reviewed. ABI Inform and Business Source Premier contain a mix of peer reviewed journals, trade journals, periodicals and news. ABI Inform and Business Source Premier are also not all full text.

If you find an article that is not available in full text press the icon (see above as ‘check sfx for availability’ and there is full text available, results should look like the picture below. Hit the ‘full text available via link to access’

Symbols for Database Searching:

An asterisk (*) – can be used to finish a word in a variety of ways.Eg: cultur* = culture, cultures, cultural, etc. Does not work in Google Scholar though.

Quotation Marks (“ ..”) – can be used to search for a phrase Eg; “global warming” searches for these words next to eachother

Suggested Databases: Proquest

ScienceDirect is a very large database that is all full text, meaning everything you find when you search will have a pdf attached. It’s not based in Australia, but has information about Australian property that you can find.

Suggested Databases: Google Scholar

There are other databases that are pertinent to Property Development, such as ScienceDirect, ABI Inform and Business Source Premier. However an alternative to trying these sources is to combine all UTS databases and search them via the Google Scholar interface. If you are off campus you’ll need to provide this url first before being able to access this service (or find the Google Scholar link via the Find Databases page):

http://ezproxy.lib.uts.edu.au/login?url=http://scholar.google.com.au/

Once Google Scholar is configured you should see ‘link to full text’ icons next to anything UTS subscribes to (see below):

Other Resources

Legal Resources - LawOne/ Legal Online

LawOne will track legislation for you. The search interface makes it easy to search by jurisdiction and by the type of legislation you need:

Westlaw AU contains a variety of legal products you can use including commentaries on aspects of Building, case law and journal articles

Specialist Property Resources:

RP Data & Domain Property DataThese are specialist databases of property ownership and sales. RP Data covers the whole of Sydney, Domain Property Data only the CBD and City East. RP Data is pictured.

Costweb: is a database that will calculate the cost of building in various states of Australia and for various types of building.

Finally, the Study Guides for Property Development on the UTS library website contain more information that might suit you including links to consultant reports from Property Council Australia, BIS Shrapnel and more. These guides

are accessible via the ‘Help’ button on the top of the library homepage:

Referencing & Referencing Software

The Harvard(UTS) is the preferred referencing system for your faculty. There is a guide to it on the library website.

There is software, such as EndNote, that will help you with your referencing. EndNote can export references from the internet, stores them, and can place them into your word processing software. The library runs training in EndNote
