UTSC Campus Council Members’ Biographies 2015 - 16 Administrative Staff Members Ms Kathy Fellowes I am an Academic & Learning Strategist with the Academic Advising & Career Centre at UTSC. I have worked at UTSC since 2003 and at the University of Toronto since 1989. My career began at the St. George campus with the Career Centre. In my present role, I meet daily with students one-to-one to discuss their academic plans and effective study strategies. I deliver workshops on study strategies and a variety of other relevant topics. I have been an active member of university governance for the last nine years holding positions as: the sole elected Administrative Staff Representative on the former Executive Committee (8yrs.); elected member of College Council (9yrs.) and Academic Committee (1 yr.). I have been serving in the role as Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee and the Academic Affairs Agenda Planning Committee since 2013. Mr. Scott McRoberts Scott McRoberts serves as the Director of Athletics and Recreation and sessional instructor in Health Sciences, at UTSC. He has experience in business development, strategic planning, project management, governance, lecturing, consulting and working with various organizations at the highest levels. He has been directly involved with the planning, building and management of TPASC. In addition to overseeing a range of programs for students, staff and faculty at UTSC, Scott is focused on creating opportunities for students. Administrative Staff Members

Ms Kathy Fellowes I am an Academic & Learning Strategist with the Academic Advising & Career Centre at UTSC. I have worked at UTSC since 2003 and at the University of Toronto since 1989. My career began at the St. George campus with the Career Centre. In my present role, I meet daily with students one-to-one to discuss their academic plans and effective study strategies. I deliver workshops on study strategies and a variety of other relevant topics. Mr. Scott McRoberts Scott McRoberts serves as the Director of Athletics and Recreation and sessional instructor in Health Sciences, at UTSC. Community Members

Ms Nancy Lee Ms Lee is the Chair of the UTSC Campus Council. A member of the Governing Council of UofT, Ms Lee also serves on Business Board and is the incoming Chair of the Elections Committee for the Governing Council. The U of T Governor worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in the radio and television divisions and was Head of Sports (2000-2006). She then worked for the International Olympic Committee’s host broadcasting company as the Chief Operating Officer for Olympic Broadcasting Services Vancouver (2006-2010). Ms Lee was responsible for the coverage of the Winter Olympics, overseeing a staff of 2,700. Most recently, she worked at the Sochi Winter Olympics and the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Currently, she is a consultant for national and international sports organizations on matters related to the media, women in sports and leadership.

Mr. Preet Banerjee Preet Banerjee graduated from the University of Toronto’s Scarborough Campus in 2001 with an HBSc. His major was neuroscience. Since graduation, he has been an active member of the Alumni Association and a regular contributor to the campus in many ways. He is a regular speaker, moderator and facilitator at campus events, including the annual Leader to Leader conference, an initiative that invites business leaders to share their stories with UTSC students, staff and alumni. Since 2005, Mr. Banerjee has been a trusted advisor to the Management & Economics Students’ Association (MESA) at UTSC. He also served as an advisor to an alumnus’s entrepreneurial venture, Tunezy, Inc. Since 2013, Mr. Banerjee has served on the UTSC Campus Council. In October, 2014, he was host of the UTSC Legacy Fund competition, a competition in support of the 50th anniversary of the campus.

Mr. Harvey Botting Harvey Botting completed his career in communications as Senior Vice-President in the media arm of Rogers Communications Inc. Prior to that, he was Vice-President, European Publishing, with Maclean Hunter Limited. He was responsible for publishing companies in eight European countries. During the 1980s, he served on the Board of Directors of Maclean Hunter, and spent 20 years on the company’s Management Committee, it’s most senior operating unit. His University of Toronto service includes membership on the President’s International Alumni Council; Committee for Honorary Degrees; UTAA executive; Chairman, Rotman Alumni Board; Chairman, Rotman Vision Fund; Alumni Affairs and Advancement Committee, Victoria University. He received an Arbor Award in 2001.

Mr. Asher Chohan My involvement with the University of Toronto, and UTSC in particular, runs long and deep. I was a student at UTSC in the late 90’s, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1999. Following graduation, I spent many years studying on campus for (finance) industry exams I was taking, culminating with the Chartered Financial Analyst designation I obtained in 2006. In 2008, I enrolled for the newly created Master of Finance degree at the Rotman School of Management and finished it in 2010. In 2010, I subsequently moved my residence into the UTSC community. Looking back on my experiences, it was my involvement on the UTSC Student Council as an elected first year, second year, and fourth year representative and eventually as VP Finance that I found to be the most rewarding.

Ms Sue Graham-Nutter Sue Graham-Nutter is on the senior management team of the Rekai Centres, long-term care facilities. She is a founder and chief organizer of Taste of the Danforth, one of Canada's largest festivals. Ms Graham-Nutter has distinguished herself as a successful businesswoman, founding her own marketing firm specializing in tourism promotion. Drawing on her valuable experience as executive assistant to the deputy minister of Culture and Communications, and as director of Revenue Development for TV Ontario, Graham-Nutter has proven herself a marketing force to be reckoned with. She has served as Chair of the Campus Affairs Committee since 2013.

Mr. John Kapageridis John Kapageridis graduated from UTSC with an Honours BSC in 2010. He is currently a health care industry sales executive. Mr. Kapageridis was a student leader while at UTSC, including serving as President of the Scarborough Campus Athletics Association, the Finance Sub-Committee of the Council on Students’ Services and Vice President of the Greek Students’ Association.

Ms Brenda Librecez Ms Librecz is a graduate of University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. The Economics Major holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Marketing Diploma from Seneca College of Applied Arts. She possesses strong public sector experience. She was Executive Director of Economic Development for the former City of Scarborough and worked with UTSC on economic development projects, from business outreach and hiring of Co-op students. Ms Librecz was the first head of Economic Development for the newly amalgamated City of Toronto. She was General Manager of Economic Development from 1998 to 2004. From 2004 to 2008, she was General Manager of Parks, Forestry and Recreation, working with UTSC on the development of the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre. She is currently Commissioner of Community and Fire Services for the City of Markham.

Dr. Jennifer McKelvie I completed my B.Sc. in the Environmental Science Co-op program at UTSC in 2000 and very much enjoyed the field work in Highland Creek that we conducted as part of the learning experience. At that time, there were no graduate studies at UTSC in my discipline so I completed my M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology at the St. George Campus. I served as President of the Geology Graduate Students Association and participated in meetings as our representative on the Graduate Student Union. During graduate school I was a teaching assistant at UTSC and as a result of my love for the community, I moved near the university in 2004 and continue to reside in the area. I completed my postdoctoral research from 2007-2009 in the Environmental NMR Centre at UTSC.

Dr. Christopher Ollson Dr. Christopher Ollson is Vice President, Strategic Development, of Intrinsik Environmental Sciences. Dr. Ollson has been involved with UTSC since 2009 when he taught a Master of Science course in Environmental Risk Assessment. A co-op employer, Dr. Ollson regularly recruits UTSC students from the Master of Environmental Sciences program. He has co-supervised MSc and PhD students at four academic institutions.

Mr. Mark Rowswell Mark Rowswell, whose stage name is Dashan, has been called the most famous foreigner in China. He has become a regular fixture on Chinese television and a cultural icon across the nation. Born and raised in Canada, Mr. Rowswell began studying Chinese in the mid-1980s, first at the University of Toronto and later at Beijing University. While in Beijing, Mr. Rowswell became interested in traditional Chinese performing arts, particularly xiangsheng, a popular form of comic dialogue. Almost 20 years later, Dashan is still a popular icon in China. Having diversified and developed into a multi-faceted performer, language educator, and television host, Mr. Rowswell is already considered a cultural ambassador between China and the West. Today, Mr. Rowswell is involved in a wide variety of activities, from hosting television programs and live events, to dramatic acting, public speaking, publishing, education, and celebrity endorsement. When he is not working in China, In December 2006, Mr. Rowswell became a Member of the Order of Canada for his work in uniting the Canadian and Chinese peoples through laughter, understanding and goodwill.

Student Members

Ms Nourhan Ahmed Nourhan Ahmed was born in Cairo, Egypt. She is currently a third year undergraduate student specializing in Computer Science and Statistics. During her time as a full-time student she worked closely with peace work, a non-profit organization dedicated to oppose developmental roadblocks around the world. She is currently the President of Fighting for Hope, UTSC’S cancer charity club. With Fighting for Hope she has lead successful fund raising events to a number of Cancer Research foundations. When she is not coding or leading events, she enjoys reading, photography and graphic design.

Mr. Andrew Leung Andrew completed his B.Sc in biology and environmental science and M.Env.Sc at University of Toronto Scarborough. He is currently pursuing for Ph.D. His doctoral research focuses on the impacts of climate change on air mass patterns and global oscillations in the Canadian arctic. In undergraduate and graduate studies, he researched on the conditions of permafrost in northern Ontario and the frequency and intensity of thunderstorms in Toronto as a result of climate change.

Mr. Joshua Miller My name is Joshua Miller. I'm a 3'd year in the specialist Arts Management program with a double minor in Theatre and Political Science. I'm the Chair of the Scarborough Hospital Foundation's Young Professionals Philanthropic Council. I was the first City Youth Councillor to represent Ward 44 Scarborough East in City Hall. In 2013 I was named one of Canada's Top 20 Under 20. I want to use my experience and knowledge of governance to stand as a strong voice for students. If elected I promise to uphold the office with integrity and respect. Above all, I promise to listen.

Teaching Staff Members

Professor Paul Kingston Paul Kingston is associate professor in the department of political science at the University of Toronto Scarborough. He completed his DPhil at Oxford University. He is the author of Britain and the Politics of Modernization in the Middle East, 1945-1958 (Cambridge University Press, 1996 and 2002). His research interests focus upon political economy, civil society and development assistance in Middle Eastern states. Dr. Kingston’s lecture will concern his current research into non-governmental organizations, civil society advocacy and postwar politics in Lebanon, and their implications for Canadian foreign policy toward the region.

Professor Leslie Chan Leslie Chan is Associate Professor, Teaching Stream, in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough, where he serves as the Program Supervisor for the International Development Studies program. A pioneer in the use of the Web for knowledge exchange and learning, Leslie has been the Director of Bioline International, a collaborative platform based at CRIA Brazil for open access distribution of research journals from close to twenty developing countries. Leslie has worked with organizations such as the Open Society Institute, UNESCO, and IDRC, in the development of alternative forms of knowledge media and communicative practices enabled by social network and collaborative software, and in the evaluation of human centered design principles and participatory approaches to media for community development. Leslie is on the editorial board of Open Medicine, and the advisory board of the Scholarly Communication in Africa project based at the University of Cape Town. He is also a member of the Research Dissemination Committee of the Canadian Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Dr. Tarun Dewan Tarun Dewan joins UTSC as a lecturer in management with a specialty in marketing. He will be teaching several marketing courses. He has taught at U of T's Rotman School of Management, Ryerson University and the University of Toronto Mississauga. His areas of interest for both teaching and research are pricing, economic models, retailing and marketing science. Dewan is the lead author of the book, Marketing: What is it Good For? [Revised Second printing, July 2006, Copley Custom Textbooks, ISBN: 1-58152-410-2] as well as the writer of several papers at proceedings, conferences and journals.

Dr. Brian Harrington I am currently a lecturer in the Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, University of Toronto Scarborough. Prior to coming to the University of Toronto, I was a research scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee working with Professor Hong Yu on the application of semantic computing and large scale information extraction to medical informatics. Until 2011, I held a Research and Tutorial Fellowship in Computer Science at Keble College, Oxford and lecture in the Oxford University Department of Computer Science. In 2009, I completed my Doctorate in Computer Science at the Oxford University Department of Computer Science.

Dr. Elaine Khoo Elaine has studied, taught and researched in universities in four different continents over the span of 27 years. Her education in the sciences culminated in her doctorate in second language education focusing on assessment. She is a Senior Lecture in the Centre for Teaching and Learning. Her research on pedagogical solutions to students’ challenges acculturating to university expectations and demands have resulted in her developing innovative co-curricular programing conducted by the English Language Development Centre (ELDC) as well as credit courses offered by the Centre for Teaching and Learning. Elaine is currently the Coordinator of UTSC’s English Language Development Centre. Elaine’s work with engaging students was recognized with University of Toronto’s Joan E. Foley Quality of Student Experience Award in 2009. Elaine has been an invited speaker to other universities in Canada to share her innovative approaches to addressing the English language challenges students face at university.

Ms Lynn Tucker Lynn Tucker is currently the Interim Chair of Arts, Culture and Media department. Engaging students in music and lifelong participation in the arts is at the forefront of her work at the university. Lynn is the conductor of the UTSC Concert Band and has been active in growing the UTSC Music program by founding the UTSC Jazz Band, the UTSC Flute Choir, as well as advocating for studies in Chamber Music. Lynn successfully co-founded the UTSC Music Ambassadors Program, and the UTSC Alumni and Community Concert Band. In 2008, she introduced the Music Performance Lecture Series to UTSC and has been instrumental in bringing nationally and internationally recognized musical artists to campus. Further, in 2010, Lynn formed a partnership with the Ontario Band Association and was thrilled to host the first annual UTSC/OBA Chamber Music festival. She recently received the Canadian Music Educators’ Association Excellence in Leadership Award.

Presidential Assessors

Professor Bruce Kidd Professor Kidd is Vice President, U of T and Principal, U of T Scarborough. He joined the University of Toronto as a lecturer in 1970. He was appointed an Assistant Professor in 1973 and an Associate Professor in 1979. In 1991, he was appointed a Professor. He was formerly Director of the School of Physical and Health Education and Acting Director of the Department of Athletics and Recreation. He is a Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education and is the past Warden of Hart House at the University of Toronto. He won 18 national senior track and field championships in Canada, the United States, and Britain. He won a gold (in the 6 Miles event) and bronze medal (in the 3 Miles event) at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games and was a member of the Canadian 1964 Summer Olympics team (competing in the Men's 5000 metres, Men's 10000 metres and scheduled to start in the Men's marathon).

Mr. Andrew Arifuzzaman Over the past 20 years, Mr. Andrew Arifuzzaman has held progressively senior leadership roles across the academic and health sectors in some of Canada’s most prestigious organizations. Throughout his career, he has led teams in a wide range of business disciplines including operations, finance, marketing and communications, information technology, research, partnerships, government relations, capital development and strategy. As Chief Administrative Officer at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC), he has spearheaded the development of the campus Strategic and Master Plans as well as its new brand strategy, positioning UTSC as a distinct, emerging pillar of Canada’s leading research-intensive university. He has also fostered partnerships across the public and private sectors that have brought together diverse groups and built innovative new programs and opportunities.

Professor William Gough Professor Gough is Interim Vice-Principal, Academic and Dean at UTSC. He joined the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough in 1991. Professor Gough is a leading researcher of climate change. He has been recognized by the Canadian Association of Geographers for Excellence in Teaching, and for Service to Geography (2011), in addition to receiving numerous research funding awards. He is also the recipient of several faculty teaching awards at UTSC. Professor Gough began his term as the University of Toronto Scarborough’s (UTSC) Vice-Dean Graduate Education and Program Development in July of 2009. Professor Gough served as a Governor on U of T’s Governing Council from 2006-2015. He was a member of its Executive Committee was the inaugural Chair of UTSC’s Campus Council.

Ex-Officio

The Honourable Michael H. Wilson, Chancellor Michael Wilson is Chancellor of the University of Toronto. He is the Chairman of Barclays Capital Canada Inc. Previously, Mr. Wilson was Ambassador of Canada to the United States of America from March 13, 2006 to October 9, 2009. Prior to taking up his position as Canada’s 22nd Ambassador to the United States, Mr. Wilson was Chairman of UBS Canada, an operating division of UBS AG. Before joining UBS in July 2001, Mr. Wilson was responsible for RBC Financial Group's Institutional Asset Management business. Mr. Wilson was elected to the House of Commons in 1979. In September 1984, he was appointed Minister of Finance and remained in that position until May 1991. He then became Minister of Industry, Science and Technology and Minister for International Trade. Mr. Wilson has been active in a number of professional and community organizations, including NeuroScience Canada Partnership, The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships and the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance. Mr. Wilson is a Companion of the Order of Canada and has honorary degrees from the University of Toronto, York University and Trinity College at the University of Toronto.

Professor Meric Gertler, President of the University of Toronto Professor Meric Gertler is President of the University of Toronto and one of the world’s foremost urban theorists and policy practitioners. Previously, Professor Gertler was dean of the University of Toronto’s largest and most diverse academic division, the Faculty of Arts & Science. Before becoming dean, Professor Gertler was vice-dean, graduate education and research in the Faculty, where he led the division’s ambitious graduate expansion plans, established governance mechanisms for graduate education and played a key role in U of T’s tri-campus graduate curriculum committee. Internationally renowned as a distinguished scholar, Professor Gertler’s research focuses on the geography of innovative activity and the economies of city-regions. He has been a frequent advisor to government agencies at all levels, both in Canada and abroad, as well as to multilateral organizations such as the European Union and the OECD. He was the founding co-director of the Program on Globalization and Regional Innovation Systems (PROGRIS) at the Munk School of Global Affairs and has also served as director of the Department of Geography’s Program in Planning.
