Biography The Reverend Dr. Roger Lincoln Shinn was born in Germantown, Ohio on January 6, 1917, son of the Reverend Henderson L. V. Shinn and Carrie Margaret Shinn. He obtained his B.A. from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio in 1938, his Master of Divinity (at that time Bachelors of Divinity, summa cum laude) from Union Theological Seminary in 1941, a doctorate from Columbia University in 1949, and was ordained with the Evangelical and Reform Church (now United Church of Christ) and the Northwest Ohio Synod in the years following World War II. Shinn’s work as an ecumenical scholar and minister was framed largely through his academic work with some of the most prominent theologians of the 20th century, notably Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Paul Tillich, all of whom he studied with during his time at Union. He went on to hold academic posts instructing in the philosophy of religion at Heidelberg and Vanderbilt University before returning to teach at Union. While at Union he also co-taught courses at New York University and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and also served Union in an administrative capacity as Dean of Instruction and Acting President. Shinn’s scholarship was supplemented by a varied public service career that included a period serving in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, in which he participated in the Battle of the Bulge, was imprisoned by the German army and subsequently won a Silver Star medal for gallantry in action. A champion of the ecumenical movement, Shinn provided leadership with the United Church of Christ, the World Council of Churches, the American Theological Society, and the National Council of Churches, and consulted for a number of civic bodies, including the Religious Advisory Council to the President’s Committee on Government Contracts from 1959-1961 (appointed by President Eisenhower), the Special Commission on Ethical Standards in Public Service from 1969-1970, and the National Institute of Health. In all of these arenas, Shinn’s investments in theological thought drew heavily on an ethics of social responsibility

within the moderate Protestant community. His style of exploring ethical issues in the field was famously interrogative and social justice-oriented, an approach that can be seen through his extensive publishing, teaching and speaking activities, most notably in the book and television program The Tangled World (1965) and the books Wars and Rumors of Wars (1972), Forced Options: Social Decisions for the 21st Century (1982; 1991 with Reconsiderations), and The New Genetics: Challenges for Science, Faith, and Politics (1996). Shinn is well-known for his deep involvement with social activism in the Protestant churches in the 1950s-1960s, and for his leadership in crafting the Statement of Faith of the United Church of Christ, a denomination which formed out of the merging of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches. The revised Statement of Faith continues to draw on Shinn’s guiding principles, which encouraged the church to espouse a “joyful testimony” of faith in God over an authoritative testament to orthodoxy. Even in retirement, Shinn continued to teach at the Pacific School of Religion, Drew University, Vanderbilt University, Vancouver School of Theology and Princeton Theological Seminary, and went on to engage in a number of ecumenical organizations and speaking opportunities. His exhaustive academic pursuits led to honorary degrees from Mission House Theological Seminary in 1960, Franklin Marsha UC in 1960, Heidelberg in 1963, Drury College in 1984 and Blackburn University in 1985. Reverend Shinn died on May 13, 2013 in Southbury, Connecticut at 96 years of age. He was survived by his wife, Katharine Cole Shinn, his partner of 69 years with whom he had been classmates at Heidelberg, their daughters Carol and Marybeth, his sister Ruth, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The papers donated by Shinn’s family and arranged here provide a thorough understanding of the varied and inquisitive nature of Roger L. Shinn’s lifelong scholarship and personal activities, and commitment to service through faith. Collection Scope and Content Notes This collection consists largely of Shinn’s own theological scholarship and career within the church, society, and academy. His papers also contain textual materials related to the history of Union Theological Seminary, with official documents as well as Shinn’s personal correspondence relating to major events in the seminary’s life and to Shinn’s ongoing academic correspondence with his students. Correspondence and materials relating to Shinn’s teaching and publishing activities show Shinn’s connections to important figures in Union and broader theological history, notably Reinhold Niebuhr, Paul Tillich, Henry Sloane Coffin, and Robert McAfee Brown, all of whom Shinn knew personally. Shinn’s materials relating to his personal life illuminate his extensive careers in the U.S. Military and in his teaching well into retirement, periods in which Shinn’s interests expanded into the arenas of warfare and civic service. These materials further cover Shinn’s affiliations to numerous ecumenical and civic organizations such as the United Church of Christ, the National Council of Churches, and the World Council of Churches. Finally, there are non-textual and graphic materials such as awards, degrees, licenses, and biographical clippings. The collection is organized in 10 series, with further divisions into subseries:

Series 10: Biographical and General, 1949-2010 (8 boxes [2 oversize], 8.25 lin. ft.) This series consists of mixed media materials pertaining to Shinn’s accreditation, honorary degrees, and faculty acknowledgments, as well as biographical materials and agendas showing biographical evidence of Shinn’s career. This series is divided into three subseries:

o Subseries 10A: Clippings and Biographical Materials, 1940-2007 (4 boxes, 2 oversize], 5.75 lin. ft.) This subseries contains photographs, high school reunion materials, biographical clippings, ordination licenses and certificates, faculty awards, and obituaries. A small but substantial group of news clippings and other materials collected by Roger Shinn's mother, Carrie Margaret Shinn, formed a late donation to this collection. This group contains his birth certificate and Christening document. The papers and occasional correspondence cover key events from Shinn's early childhood throughout his career ending with his work at Union in the 1960s. Also included among Shinn’s mother’s clippings are approximately 9 color photographs from later in Shinn’s life, including some photos of Shinn in his signature neckties, some of which are housed with Shinn’s military jacket in 10A, OS Box 4. Materials also uniquely consist of realia including Shinn’s Silver Medal of Valor from WWII, approximately 32 military pins and 2 dog tags, a military jacket and related patches, and Shinn’s personal collection of remarkable ties. Photographs of Shinn wearing the ties can be found in Series 10A, Box 3.

o Subseries 10B: Union Appreciation of Roger Shinn, 1985-1998 (1 box, 0.5 lin. ft.) This subseries contains materials from the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Shinn’s graduation from Union, his distinguished alumni certificate, and letters
