PHY, Physical layer

155 Mbit/s: SDH, Synchronous Digital Hierarchy, (most countries) or SONET (america) 1.5/2 Mbit/s: PDH, Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy: E1 (most countries), T1 (america), J1 (japan)

ATM, Asynchronous Transfer Mode Divide the phyical medium between several users via the use of cells. Different cell header information (VP/VC) for each user. Quality of Service.

AAL, ATM Adaption Layer To adapt the upper layer to the ATM layer. AAL5 for data traffic (IP, Signaling). SDUs vary in size but are not sensitive to delay. AAL2 for air interface traffic over Iub and Iu-CS payload. SDUs have fixed size but are sensitive to delay. AAL0. no adaptation, straight ATM, each SDU is fitted into one cell.

SAAL, Signaling ATM Adaption Layer A link control protocol for signaling. Establish link in secure mode, acknowledge messages. MTP3B, Message Transfer Part 3 Broadband A routing protocol to transfer signaling messages within a SS7 network. (compare with IP
