Compact Performance Series
The-Safety-Valve.com
Utility Steam Applications Typical application requirements include: - Small to medium capacities - Compact and efficient valve design- Corrosion resistance - Short delivery times ex stock Originally steam technology has been the key invention to enable industrial development and has been enhanced and improved over decades. Even today it is still one of the main mediums to transport energy and heat in process plants and facilities for industries such as:
Chemicals Food and Beverages Power and Steel Pharmaceuticals
Petrochemicals Steel Production Sugar Textiles
As all steam systems are working under pressure, they need to be protected against undesired overpressure situations to ensure the safety of employees, equipment and environment. In India steam applications are regulated by the Indian Boiler Regulation (IBR) and the most common solution is to install a reliable safety valve. The applications can typically be categorized into a high pressure, high temperature primary cycle and a lower pressure secondary cycle of utility steam.
The two drawings below show typical installations of safety valves in utility steam applications:
Primary cycle Secondry cycle
Utility Steam Applications
Utility steam is either generated from a dedicated small capacity boiler (with less than 1000 kg/hr steam capacity) or derived from an already available high capacity boiler and reduced to utility steam through a pressure reducing station. For the low capacity boilers, often referred to also as “baby boilers” Type 237 can be sufficient as a primary protection device on the boiler drum. Where larger capacity boilers are used the application of Type 237 is after the pressure reducing station to protect the utility steam lines or the steam consuming equipments.
Typical utility steam applications:
Applications
Jacketing Steam:In chemical and pharma-ceutical processes the reactor/process vessels are provided with steam jacketing to maintain the required process tempe-rature.
Textile production:In the dying and pro-duction processes for cloth various chemicals are used that have to be activated and distributed under heat which is indu-ced by steam.
Other processes:Where steam is used as a medium for maintaining elevated temperatures:In various processes like block board and plywood manufacturing, paper recycling, Tyre chord ma-nufacturing and moulding utility steam is used as a standard medium.
