these aesthetically pleasing New England inspired villages with vintage rural character. Founded in 1787 by pioneers from Connecticut, the picturesque Village of Clinton was widely known during the 19th century for its many private secondary schools, a distinction that earned it the nickname “Schooltown.” For nearly 100 years, Clinton’s academies and seminaries met the educational needs of hundreds of students throughout the Northeast, including U.S. president Grover Cleveland, Red Cross founder Clara Barton and transcontinental railroad visionary and university founder Leland Stanford. Hamilton College, which sits atop a hill overlooking the village was founded in 1793 as the Hamilton-Oneida Academy by the Reverend Samuel Kirkland, a missionary to the Oneida Indians, it was chartered as a college in 1812. Today it stands as one of America’s oldest and finest liberal arts colleges. Among its many prestigious alumni are abolitionist Gerrit Smith, U.S. Vice President James Sherman, painter Daniel

Huntington, poet Ezra Pound, and distinguished statesman Elihu Root. A Clinton native, Mr. Root won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912, and for many years his family tended to the gardens in the glen behind the Root homestead on the Hamilton campus. Today, the Root Glen is open to the public and has become a favorite spot for quiet walks among the shaded red-shale paths to admire 65 species of trees, shrubs, plants and flowers. traffic that connect welcoming small towns and villages. Even the largest communities—the Cities of Utica and Rome—are easily accessible and provide plenty of amenities for bicycle tourists. There are very few unpaved roads in the area and the majority are suitable for riding. Rome is the historic starting place of the first dig of the Erie Canal in 1817. Join the fun of the annual Cycle The Erie bike tour, a 400-mile fully supported ride along the legendary Erie

Canalway Trail, part of New York’s 750-mile Empire State Trail system. For a shorter organized ride, start with the Tour the Tow-path, a 36-mile long land and water trail between DeWitt and Rome in Central New York. It follows a portion of the Erie Canal which was active between 1825 and 1917. Some of the best riding in Oneida County is on the backroads. ish for anything? From eight-inch bluegills to fat walleyes to big, muscular carp to relentlessly combative smallmouth bass? How about fly fishing for trout? For many anglers, it’s

way more than a hobby. It’s more like a lifestyle, and there are plenty of opportunities to live it right here in Oneida County. We have more than 100 miles of public fishing rights on trout creeks and rivers in the county, and hundreds more that run through state lands or are accessible by landowner permission. Oriskany Creek is one favorite destination. It is easily accessed, and it is terrific, with many wild fish in the upstream areas, includ-ing occasional brook trout, and some bruisers in its last few miles as it flows toward the Mohawk River. West Canada Creek has an even bigger reputation, and for good reason—it offers the real possibility of a 20-inch brown on any trip. It has been regarded as one of New York’s top trout streams just about forever, and it’s been even better since the DEC began stocking two-year-old fish more than 20 years ago. There are many other choices: Sconondoa Creek, Sauquoit Creek, the upper Mohawk River, the east and west branches of Fish Creek, and several others with low-key reputations that offer high-end experiences. Not into fly fishing? There are innumerable waters where you can fish with bait or lures for almost any species with great success. Oneida Lake and Lake Delta are terrific walleye and bass fisheries, and the Mohawk River and Erie “Barge” Canal offer a wide variety of species, including occasional northern pike of impressive dimensions. If you love to fish, Oneida County is a great bet, no matter what you are after.

The Utica Curling Club dates back to 1868, and with six sheets of ice, it’s the oldest and largest curling club in the eastern US. The BREIA Trails are a cross-country skier’s paradise covering more than 31 miles (50km), making it one of the largest groomed X-country ski systems in the east. The 2021 AIS Empire State Classic will be a once-in-a-lifetime showcase with the first ever AHL outdoor game in Oneida Coun-ty featuring the Utica Comets vs. the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday, February 13, 2021 on the grounds of Griffiss Business & Technology Park in Rome. The event will also feature a game between the Utica College Men’s Hockey Team and Oswego State on Friday, February 12, 2021. The AIS Empire State Classic will be part of a larger Winter Festival celebrating the 25th anniversary of Griffiss Local Development Corporation and the best of Oneida County with interactive exhibits, family- friendly events and cutting- edge demonstrations.
