OPENING TIP l UTEP (4-0) plays in the championship game of the DIRECTV Wooden Legacy tournament on Sunday in Anaheim, Calif. The Miners will face Washington (5-0) at 8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT. l ESPN2 will have national coverage with Roxy Bernstein and Corey Williams calling the action. l The Miners and the Huskies will be matching up for the eighth time, and the first time since the 2001-02 season when UTEP won 74-62 at the Haskins Center. The Miners have won the last four meetings to take a 4-3 lead in the series led- ger. This is the third time UTEP and Washington have met in a tournament setting; the Huskies won 54-49 in the San Diego Classic on Dec. 28, 1976 and 82-53 in the preseason NIT on Nov. 22, 1985 in Denver. l UTEP’s Tim Floyd has a 3-6 record in his coaching career against Washington and is 3-5 versus Lorenzo Romar. Floyd recorded his 300th collegiate coaching victory versus the Huskies on Feb. 7, 2008 in Seattle. l UTEP is seeking its first championship of an in-season tournament outside of its own Sun Bowl Invitational since December of 1984, when it won the Saluki Shootout in Carbondale, Ill. with victories over Western Illinois and Southern Illi- nois. l Hunter is the first UTEP player to register dou-ble-doubles in the first four games of a season since All-American Jim Barnes had 26 consecu-tive to start 1963-64.lHunter is averaging 18.0 points and 12.5 re-bounds. The last Miner to average a double-double for a season was Terry White in 1981-82 (10.1 ppg/10.2 rpg).l Cedrick Lang has scored in double figures in three straight games for the first time since March of 2013 versus Memphis, SMU and Hous-ton. This matches his career-long streak.l Julian Washburn is ranked 15th in school his-tory with 1,222 points. He needs only four points to pass Jason Williams into 14th place. Wash-burn is also 14th in school history with 477 field goals made.l Washburn is off to another slow start offen-sively, shooting 30.8 percent from the field. Last year he shot 35.6 percent over the first 10 games before finding his stride.l C.J. Cooper is tied for seventh place in school history with 119 three-point field goals.l Cooper has 19 assists and four turnovers in four games. Over his last eight contests dating back to the end of the 2013-14 season, Cooper has dished out 38 dimes with only eight give-aways.l The Miners have won 10 games versus teams from power conferences under coach Tim Floyd, including Washington State and Xavier this sea-son. UTEP’s other victims under Floyd were Michigan & Texas Tech (2010-11 season), Clem-son & Auburn (2011-12), Oregon & Nebraska (2012-13), and Tennessee & Washington State (2013-14).l UTEP hasn’t been outrebounded this season and had a 40-31 edge on the boards against Xavier on Friday. The Miners have a 49-33 ad-vantage on the offensive glass in 2014-15.l UTEP has made more free throws (67) than its opponents have attempted (58). COACH TIM FLOYDl Tim Floyd is in his 21st season as a collegiate head coach.l Floyd has posted a 413-232 mark during stints at Idaho (1986-88), New Orleans (1988-94), Iowa State (1994-98), USC (2005-09) and UTEP (2010-present).l His UTEP record is 85-52 in his fifth season.l Floyd is second in school history in wins. Hall of Famer and Floyd mentor Don Haskins has 719.l Floyd was also head coach of the Chicago Bulls (1998-2002) and the New Orleans Hornets (2003-04) in the NBA.l Floyd has enjoyed 18 winning seasons in 20 years as a collegiate head coach. His teams have made eight NCAA Tournament appearanc-es and four trips to the NIT.l Only Haskins (1,073 games) and Marshall Pennington (146) have coached more games at UTEP than Floyd (137).l Floyd has three former Division I head coach-es on his staff in Phil Johnson (San Jose State), Bob Cantu (USC) and Bobby Braswell (Cal State Northridge).
