Utah State Parks Seeks Dark Sky Interns We Need You—Around the world, Dark Skies are rapidly disappearing due to light pollution. Utah is fortunate to have many areas that have high elevation, dry climate and isolation from major urban areas. Our Utah State Parks harbor some of the darkest, most breathtaking skies in North America and we need to let people know how to enjoy and help protect this precious natural resource! Utah State Parks International Dark Sky Recognition—Utah State Parks was honored that Goblin Valley State Park and Dead Horse Point State Park attained Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park designation in 2016. Antelope Island State Park has submitted its application for designation and is awaiting the decision from the International Dark Sky Association. East Canyon State Park, Rockport State Park, Wasatch Mountain State Park, Jordanelle State Park, Deer Creek State Park, Steinaker State Park, Red Fleet State Park, Fremont Indian State Park, Quail Creek State Park and Gunlock State Park have been compiling and plan to submit their applications for International Dark Sky Park status this year (2017). Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park and Goosenecks State Park will submit their applications in 2018. Help with Fun and Interesting Programs—All of these parks could use energetic and inspired interns to help refine their International Dark Sky Park applications and put on exciting Dark Sky programs such as: constellation tours, meteor shower parties, full moon hikes, scorpion safaris, bat expeditions and owl outings. These programs are fun to put on and the people who attend them are fascinated and appreciative. Interns would learn how to: skillfully use a telescope; identify and describe constellations, nebulas, and other celestial phenomena; help people learn about and lose their fear of nocturnal creatures; and aid people in understanding the importance of dark skies and how they can help reduce light pollution. Other related program opportunities often arise.
