Rabbis MessageHas Our Country Lost its Mind?

Friends, we are in the Twilight Zone. We must be. We couldnt possibly be in theUnited States of America in the year 2012. Not when the United States Senate isintroducing bills to cut funding for birth control. Not when Planned Parenthood isunder attack from all sides, including other womens groups. Not when women in

our country stand to be forcibly subjected to intravaginal sonograms as a prerequisiteto abortion. A tube forcibly inserted into a woman? No, that would be assault! No,this couldnt be happening here. If it were, it would mean that this country had lostits mind! No, this MUST be THE TWILIGHT ZONE!!!

What can we do? Fight. Fight, fight, fight. Call the senators and members of Con-gress. For those who are opposing access for women to birth control coverage, andthe gamut of preventative health care funding, we must assert womens rights to this

coverage and advocate strongly to these people, who are making life and death decisions over womens lives. For those who have supported womens health care rights, we must thank them. This is extremely important. They need to know that they have the support of their constituents, and indeed, the majority of Americans. And, as members of Reform congregations, we are going to join Reform Jewish Voice of New York State in

Albany on Monday, May 7th, for Advocacy Day. One of our primary concerns is to pass the ReproductiveHealth Act. The intent of this is to move abortion laws to the Health Code, where they belong, and out of thePenal Code, where they have been languishing for over 40 years. Moving these laws will avoid the possibilitythat any doctor would be charged with criminal behavior if, God forbid, Roe v. Wade were ever to be over-turned and the decisions would revert to the individual states. Please access RJVs website and register forthis most important day. I will be there, as will our president, Bea Hanks, and our congregants. Here is thewebsite to register: http://rac.org/advocacy/rjv.

Our Festival of Passover is a celebration of freedom and liberation from bondage. Before women had controlover their reproductive lives, many of them were in bondage. They gave birth to more children than theycould support or care for. Their options for academic and professional achievement were limited at best, andusually closed out altogether. In desperation, many took life-threatening measures to end or avoid unwanted

pregnancies. How can we even be THINKING of turning back the clock to such a situation?! During thisparticular Passover, we must commit ourselves to fight against those who have launched this attack uponwomen, and upon our freedom of choice as Americans. . . .

But now I will step out of the Twilight Zone for a moment to rejoin you, my rational friends, long enough togive thanks for the freedom that we have as American Jews, and vow along with you to protect it. In addition,I will wish all of you, and those you care about, a sweet and joyous Passover holiday. When we gather for ourseders, may our hopes for the messianic era come to fruition - our vision of a just, compassionate, and peacefulworld - even as we remember that it is our sacred mission to work to bring this about.

On a more personal note, I offer my heartfelt thanks to all of you for your kindness and support on the eveningof my installation as President of the New York Board of Rabbis. When you come to temple for services dur-ing the next two years, you will see the very beautiful Torah cover that Rabbi Yaakov Kermaier, immediatePast President, gave to me that evening. This is a wonderful tradition of the Board, as the mantle is quiteliterally passed from one president to the other. I have to say that I was just so intensely proud of our congre-gation that evening. All of you were so welcoming to all our visitors: my rabbinic colleagues, my family andfriends, Steves congregants, and the members of Boards Lay Advisory. And the temple looked great. Thenew lights in the sanctuary make an incredible difference, the social hall was beautifully decorated, and thedessert reception was delicious. And of course, there just isnt any substitute for our cantors and musicians, and our music, and the music that evening was particularly glorious. Rabbi Kermaier made a point of speak-ing with me before he left after the reception to thank me, and our entire congregation, for making him and

A few months ago I wrote that in this column that our membership is growing. I wrote that word of mouth isone of the most effective tools in attracting new members. And if our services and activities enrich your lives, why wouldnt you want to tell people? Now its time for an extra push. A larger membership will allow Un-ion Temple to offer more activities and programming that meet more of our wishes and needs.

We are introducing a program called Member Get A Member. Heres how it works.

everyone feel so welcome. And of course, your gift of that gorgeous Ayala Bar necklace was a wonderful sur-prise, and I am so grateful. I hope you enjoy seeing it, because I intend to wear it often, as I already have ontwo Shabbatot. Thank you one and all. . . .

"Traces of Sepharad," consists of 45 interpretiveetchings of Judeo-Spanish proverbs with literaryand scholastic essays by Antonio Muoz Molina,Spain's most celebrated contemporary novelistand Professor T.A. Perry, a Sephardic and Bibli-cal scholar. Traces of Sepharad is the first bookto use Ladino proverbs as the basis of a largebody of serious visual art (not illustration). Itsunique focus is on language, the most endan-

gered aspect of the Sephardic culture. It is alsothe first book of proverbial wisdom to bring to-gether the disciplines of literature, scholarshipand fine art. Together, the themes of language, history, cultural sensibility, exile, cultural adap-tation, retention and loss of cultural and religiousidentity, as well as connections to life in contem-porary Spain, are explored by respected, interna-tionally recognized writers and intellectuals.

The Etchings:The sheer breadth and number of lovely etchings, withtheir many faceted levels of meaning, appeal to a broadaudience, even those unfamiliar with Sephardic culture. At the same time, the Judeo-Spanish language of theproverbs, Ladino, directs our attention to the Sephardicculture, the exile from Spain, and life as it continued in

the Diaspora, with links to other Spanish-speaking peo-ples. The exhibition also rekindles interest in Spanishhistory, especially the period during which the three re-ligions (Jewish, Muslim and Christian) lived together inrelative peace and with shared cultural val-ues. Additionally, the proverbs themselves give the ex-hibition a unique international appeal: they are easilyrecognized, understood, and shared by many personsspeaking Latin or non-Latin based languages.

    Shalom!

With Passover quickly approaching, spring is in theair. As the first of Nisan marks one of Judaisms fournew years, we start to look ahead toward the rebirth ofa new season. Curiously, it is also at this time that, inour academic calendar, we begin to prepare for the endof one school year and to make plans for the next. So,while were still preparing for our Religious Schools

model seder on April 1st, we simultaneously planahead for next year.

In this light, I want to invite you to imagine with methe beginning of a new program at Union Temple Re-ligious School. The UT Religious School team is pre-paring a family education curriculum for our KinderKef program that will consider both preschool/kindergarten students andtheir parents as the primarylearners. Every week, parents will come to school

with their children, sometimes learning alongsidethem and sometimes learning separately. The majorfocus of the years curriculum is the Jewish family, and concepts such as Living Jewishly helps me carefor my family will guide the learning.

This program isnt yet set in stone, and I encourageinterested parents to share your thoughts, questions, and suggestions. We hope that this pilot initiative

can get off the ground next year and launch someterrific learning in the years ahead; we invite you tojoin us on this exciting journey!

May your new year be one of welcome change andgrowth as the Passover season brings joy to you andyour family.

    Lshalom, in peace,

Preschool Can Spring be Far Behind?March was a month filled withcelebrations. Early in the monththe Hummingbirds, our foursclass, celebrated the 100th day of

the school year. Among the manyactivities which centered on thenumber 100, the children an-swered the question, What wouldyou do if you had $100? Some ofthe responses included: Buy adog, Buy a stuffed unicorn, buy a batman and batmobile, buy a real plane, buy 100 more dollars, and buy 100 things. The Hum-mingbirds also made festive hats which they decoratedwith 100 items, and made 10 page stamp books with

each page containing 10 stamps. On March 8th, Rabbi Goodman joined us to celebratePurim. All of the children gathered in the big room tohear Rabbi Goodman read the Megillah. Theycheered and jeered, shook their homemade groggers, and donned masks and crowns.

Another very special event of the month was a jointprofessional development teacher workshop with thestaff of Brooklyn Heights Synagogue Preschool. Jean

Schreiber, a block consultant recentlyfeatured in an article in the New YorkTimes, visited us for a hands- onworkshop. Our teachers enjoyed get-

ting down on the floor and buildingwith blocks. We learned how to set upa block area, how to encourage girlsto build in the block area, and how toapply block building across the cur-riculum. After a full morning of blockbuilding we spent the afternoon in

groups, discussing classroom set up, what works anddoesnt work in your classroom, and parent teacherconferences. Our staff was thrilled to have an opportu-nity to spend the day learning and interacting with an-

other staff. We are currently planning for our summer program. The program is open to our preschool community andthe community at large. If you would like to receivean application or information about the programplease email us at [email protected].

After our very special Brotherhood Shabbat at the end of a very busy March its time to look ahead to some ofthe special events in the coming months. Its hard to believe that Passover is already here and summer is just afew short months away.

Make sure that your taxes are already done on Sunday, April 15th so you can join us at 10 AM for a very spe-cial program with Marc Shanker, author ofTraces of Sepharad, 45 etchings of Judeo-Spanish Proverbs.Through the use of Ladino proverbs, Shanker focuses on Sephardic visual art and language, one of the mostendangered aspects of the culture. Of course, everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served.

May always brings with Mitzvah Day and many thats always a great day at the Temple. Next months issuewill have great deal more about but save the date for Sunday, May 20th.

and love and religious meaning both outside and inside the Orthodox community. Every reader will be movedby the descent into drugs and sex that eventually led to Reva's ascent to the higher reaches of spirituality. Andeveryone will have an opinion to express about and an insight to draw from her astounding mystical experi-ence.

Haven't read the book? Not to worry. Just bring yourself, your friends, your own life experience, and your ap-petite. For there will be abundant food to enhance our Rosh Chodesh celebration, as well as food for yourmind. Once the discussion gets going, you are bound to have a great deal to contribute. Meet Our New Member Dennies Gajadhar Dennies Gajadhar was born in New Amsterdam, British Guiana, and grew up with twobrothers and two sisters. She attended St. Therese RC Girls School and later the RosignolSecondary and New Amsterdam Multilateral Schools. She worked for Guyana Airways andlater Global Travel as a manager. She also worked with Elegant Resorts as the WinwardIslands representative for the company. She has two daughters, Stacy and Kendra, who livein Anguilla. Meet Dennies in her own words, one of our new Union Temple members!

I have been asked numerous times what brought me to Judaism, to which I reply either, Idont know, or, "Because I love Judaism. When I reflect on where my journey really began, I always thinklovingly of a young boy named Jakob, who, at the tender age of seven, brought his Jewish alphabet home andtried to teach me the Aleph - Bais, telling me I really should be Jewish. It took me another four years to reflecton his words and begin a journey that I am so happy to have started. After another three years, I called around toas many as five different synagogues but the voices on the other end of the phone lacked warmth. After puttingmy search on hold for a while, I decided to give it one last try and called Union Temple of Brooklyn. How goodit was to hear a very warm voice on the phone giving me directions by both bus and subway to the temple.

On my first attempt, I took a walk around the block and back to the bus stop and returned home. The follow-ing week, my second attempt, I got dressed and got as far as my door, but didnt exit. That resulted in mywatching the 6 p.m. news fully dressed. After a few more weeks of procrastination, I decided to give it one lasttry and walked in holding my breath. I was not prepared for such a warm welcome. I knew then, as I knownow, that I had arrived at the right place. I have finally reached that place where I am happy. Not just happy, but very happy. Help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing. Every week as we recite theMi She-beirach during services, I think of all the wonderful people whom I have come to know, and who in the mostunusual ways have blessed my life, for which I shall be forever grateful. I also think of all my friends andrelatives to whom I made numerous excuses, or told little white lies, so that they would not find out that I wasentering the gates of Judaism. Yes, I was worried about their criticism. When we recite that prayer, I turn in-ward and give my own silent prayer of thanks. There is so much to be thankful for, if only we be still, just forone moment and reflect.

Yes, the congregation may be small, but if one would like to experience true fellowship, family, and peoplewith a lot of love to share, it can be found at Union Temple.

During my journey, when I was in doubt, as I often was, one Rabbi said to me, You know, God moves all thebad things and bad people aside and finds a path for you to walk." Is there any reason to question that?

It is with profound sadnessthat we record the passingof longtime member andformer trustee of Union

    Temple

on February 28th.We express our deepestsympathy to Lucille's

    Thank You From Marianne Dreyfus

How can I possibly thank everyone for the verymoving Erev Shabbat "send off" you gave me afew weeks ago. So many people worked hard tomake the evening possible - the delicious home-cooked dinner, the program, the festive atmos-phere and the warm spirit surrounding it all.

Union Temple has been an integral part of ourfamily and will continue to be, with many pre-cious memories. The beautiful silver pin and thepiece of the Brooklyn Bridge you presented tome will add to these memories, a reminder of 47years in the community. Thank you one and all !
