,' t,MERRY CHRISTMAS and GOOD SAILING IN 1976.

Commodore P. Clift Price

Q AYC ANNUAL BANQUET

All that attended would no doubt join in to say that this was the be-st Banquet ever. The 1ood, dancing and fellowship was great and everyone seemed .to be having a good time. Our thanks to Judy Reinhart and her co!TITiittee for planning a good party.

Special awards were presented, and for the benefit of those that did not attend, they were:

JiQ B. Card Memorial· - Ed Halter

Al Burke Memorial - Bobby Hardin

Jesse McElroy Smith Bowl - Bud Boucher

Single Handed Championship - Dave Hasti

Blue Duck - Pete Reinhart

Texian-Navy Cup - Jack Kern

AYC Ladies Champ.ionship - Mary Goodwin

Other speci a 1 awards were presented along with the winners of the Fall and Winter Series races. Special awards went to Regatta Chairman and members that had

freely donated their time to the club for the benefit of all members, and to outgoing AYC Officers.

It might be worth mentioning that Aggie Painton won an award for "Agl tat ion" and in conjunction, Paul Keller won an award for "Sportsmanship. 11 These awards consisted of each receiving a broken tennis racket.

The newly elected officers were introduced and they are as follows:

Comnodore: Bud Boucher Vice-Conmodore: Jack Breen Secretary: Jack Kern Treasurer:· Russel 1 Painton Race Conmander: John Lohr Fleet Commander: Ed Halter Building & Grounds - Paul Keller

On behalf of the membership and myself, I would like to ta~e this opportunity to thank each and everyone of the officers and club members who have devoted much of their time to make AYC a club that we can all be very proud to say that we are members of.

BLUE DUCK AWARD

This is a special award, nominated and elected by the membership at the Banquet. The award signifies the "Blopper" of the year, and is a rotating trophy with a "blue plastic duck" sitting on the top of a very attractive trophy! Pete Reinhart was the winner of this trophy this year, but feel the other nominees deserve some mention. They were: · · Roger Harden: Roger was seen sailing in 2 boats (Thistles) at once in Regatta . Seems his legs were in one boat with the greater part of his body in another. Then the inevitable happened, and Roger found himself in the water just feet from the finish line. As is this were not enough, there were some 14 ot 15 Lightnings approaching .·the finishing line. The end of the Story? I have, not heard it, but perhaps your imagination can give it a good one.

., Linda McDavitt: Linda was nominated as having the "hottest" Fireball on the lake. Some people will go to all kinds of extremes!

John Bartlett: John was attempting to retrieve a halyard at the mast head of a moored keel boat. Would you believe the boat capsized·, .filled with water and nearly ~urning the boat. Barry Madjeri ck furthered John's nomination by saying that John was sailing his Laser with a 2 piece mast, and everyone knows that ·Lasers have a one piece mast. This statement prompted the following nomination:

Barry Madjerich: Barry was nominated because of the above statement (actually John's mast broke during high wind conditions)ri with the nominator stating that for someo·ne who should be more knowledgeable .· about boats, he should know that Laser mast always come in two sections. Perhaps fiarry•s nomination should have been added to, as I observed this incident from the point, of which John was close to. Barry came to the rescue. After John got the remainder of the mast down and all secured and the tow line attached, he nodded to . Barry he was ready, at which Barry gave, full throttle. I can '·t type what John screamed, nut I took notice that sky was between the bottom of John's boat and the water and I began to search harder for evidence of water skis attached to the bottom of John 1 s boat.

Bl ue Duck Award . ..... con't.

Jane Heaton: Jane decided one day that she could whip anything, including a blowing gale and sailed off on her Sunfish. After numerous capsizes and depleted ego, she accepted help from a stranger in a motor boat. Little did she know that this gentlemen? was a strip act, when he began to strip his clothes! Alas, he stopped at his long johns, jumped in the water, righted her boat, attached a tow line and tillered the boat. back to the AYC. Now, Jane was out flat across the deck of her boat. Her contention was that she was tired. My conten- ~ tion would be that she was attempting to appear disguised so as not to be noticed or ·trying to hide in the cockpit!!

· That pretty well sums it up. Pete Reinhart got the trophy. Jan Van Praag nominated him and I couldn't begin to repeat her story as well as she told it, so if you're interested in the facts, you will just have to ask her.

My my, now do I have a blopper! What a great "Blue Duck" nominee this would have been! Ever gone to a regatta l only to find out there is no regatta because it was scheduled the week· before?

My informer has sworn me to secrecy, but rumor has it that Carl Morris, Duane Dobson and Robert Touchet did just that·~ One would think with all the problems and hassles involved in getting a keel boat out of the water and on a trailer to go to a regatta that they would be

MC Fleet News ........ by Gary Runyon

MC Scows have bendy rigs. On Nov. 23rd., Chuck Martin learned the real meaning of the word 11 bendy11 when his bendy mast bent too far •• His comment, "Well .... there goes the mast," was both timely and accurate. This will not dampen Chuck's enthusiasm for heavy air, however, for when his new mast arrives, he will continue his never-ending quest for greater thrills.

There was another casualty that weekend. The day before, Clarke Witt's spreader decided to turn into a pretzel. The shroud did not separate from the spreader this time, as it did in Chu.ck' s case, and the ref ore the mast remained in its optimum operating position.

In light of the incidents above and other equally mysterious factors, certain members of the MC Fleet feel that is is appropriate that in January a tuning session be held. HoP,efully any differences that may exist in sailing ability can be minimized. Also, rigging will be checked for wear. A brush race will follow the tuning to test the results.

Also in January, the MC Fleet will have its annual meeting. Members will be contacted to attend both festive events.

Melges Boat Works has announced a price increase of around $200.00 on the MC. The 3 boats that Sailing Imports has in stock are now even more attractive.

The winter series was most handily won by Judy Reinhart and seasoned crew member Diana Martin. ·This is the second series in a row that they have won. Chuck Martin p.1aced 2nd in the Winter Series.

As we wind up the Fall series, Hap Arnold and Tom Bauer are running a close race for top spot in the M-20 fleet.

Jim Morrison has just won the infamous No-BULL Prize for the shortest book of the year, entitled "Great Thoughts of Accompl!.shed Sailors•, Jim's book tells (in 25 words or less) how he came from behind to finish next to last in the M-20 Nationals this year

The Semi-Annual M-20 "fast sailor" trophy was awarded after the 2nd race on Dec. · 7th. Since I'm writing this on Dec. 5th, you will have to wail u~til next year's 1st Tell-Tale arrives to find out who.it was awarded to. Hold your breath (chuckle)l!lll

~OSTBI TE SERIES

The frostbits series for 1976 will begin Sunday, Jan. 25th and run for six consecutive Sundays. Lasers will be the primary fleet, however is there is sufficient interest from Sunfish sailors (defined roughly as at least 3 'fish on the line) they will be included also.

Details of the series are yet to be worked out put there will probably be four races each Sunday, plus a practice raqe. Some fraction around ~ of the races will be allowed as throw outs. Special trophies (e.g. best sailor with I.Q. below 81, · best female, best old female, best Turkey, best . poached egg, best big sailor with bad knees etc.) may be pres ented, or then again may not.

South Coast Fleet News ........... by Mike Bartlett

Carl Morris won the winter series, but just by the skin of his teeth. Mike Bartlett was hot after him, but couldn't quite catch up. Better get a new set of peddles and a new peddler, Carl, cause you're gonna get a run for your money. Speaking of money, you better hope that money spent on the new sail you've ordered is a good one. Problem: Your competitors have also ordered new sails!

The fleet missed Jack & Edith Downs at their table at the AYC Banquet. They were unable to attend due to an illness in the family.

Keel Fleet News ...... by Russell Painton

A meeting was held at the home of Russell and Aggie'Painton on Wednesday, Dec. 5th for the purpose of organizing MORC fleet. About 25 people attended and requirements for racing MORC within the fleet were established.

Before a non-yacht club member can consider himself to be a MORC racer with respect . to the AYC fleet, he must have a valid MORC rating certificate issued by the National Office. Within the AYC a person who wishes to join MORC for racing and does not have a valid racing certificate,' may get a temporary certificate from the Ar.m·dillo Station measurer, and present this to the fleet captain, Bill Levens. This will entitle him to race in one series race, upon which he will need to have a racing certificate from the National Office, to continue to race in further series. The temporary rating will be no lower than the national average rating for his class of boat.

MORC is a national organ1zation, and has been in existence for about 20 years. Officers are elected nationally, and it is one of the most widely used handicap systerrs :in tm HSA. No boat over 30 ft. OAL may join. Other requirements are: Regulations on self bailing, sleeping accommodations, self righting, designated safety equipment and other attributes of offshore racing boats.

About 15 boats in the AYC have certificates. The cost to get a rating certificate is $30.00.

flOBIE FLEEI 64 by Jane Van Praag

Hal They thought they put one on me: I was invited over to Denny and Gloria Jeck's new home to share in some Hobie Holiday cheer, and before I was into my 3rd glass of Cheer they elected me Corresponding Secretary and new Treasurer John · ·· McGinty started pestering me for dues money! What they don't know, of course, is that I am really an undercover agent for the Keel Fleet; my mission is to learn the secret of their gofast capability. I suspect, since they spend most of their time · with only one hull in the water, the other hull is merely a spare and that these boats are just swingkeels in disguise s'O they can enjoy a better ratingl So far, however, all I can substantiate is the election of new officers, conducted by outgoing Commodore Bill Crum.

Charles Sicking is the new Commodore and it follows that Al Miliefsky is the new Vice Commodore, since he was the most knowledgeable person on the subject there. Shirley Milie[sky, Recording Secretary and coincedentally his wife, will be on hand to record everything he does. Ted Dietz fills the newly created position of Photographer. This is another clever idea in that Ted will be so busy taking action shots he will be unable to race effectively and becomes one less person to have to compete against.

The January meeting takes place on the 22nd at Charles' which falls on Thursday (bad TV night) so .stand by!

Laser Fleet News by John Lohr.

Despite a general blaze of incompetence on the last day, Dave Hasti held on to win the November Laser. Fleet Series. Going into the last race Dave had seen his once comfortable lead evaporate until basso-voiced Terry Hight held a slim lead with John Lohr i n second. Unfortunately for the man of meagre mustache, he pulled a 5th in the finale with Dave Hasti 1st and John Lohr 2nd. Twentyone Lasers participated in the series, the secqnd ad hoc one month duel to the death of a continuing group.

1. Dave Hasti - 27-1/4 pts. 2. John Lohr - 29-1/4 pts . 3. Terry Hight - 31 pts 4. Jack Kern - 37.5 pts. 5. David Maguire - 38-3/4 pts. 6. Deke Dekeyser - 50 pts. 7. Mark Rylander - 55 pts. 8. Louise Epstein .- 67 pts . 9 . . John Bartlett - 95 pts. 10. David Powell - 95-1/2 pts.

The Laser Fleet provided comic relief for the onlookers after the regular Dec. 1 series cancellation. Jack Kern displayed blinding speed up-wind and more or less instant death off the wind. Hasti continued his downward and overward spiral and Lohr was slow upwind and never tipped over. Hap Arnold was a reefer while others tried a reefer, all to no avail . Thanks to the, Bauers and Jim for· running the races.

The Laser Class is now the second largest class in the world (would you believe the Optimist Pram is first). Over 31,000 Lasers have been produced.

1/4 Ton Fleet.News •.. . .. by Rod Malone.

Here ye, Here ye! The 2nd annual California Cup Regatta, symbolic of the 1/4 ton fleet championship will be sailed on 1-10-75, 1-11-75 and 1-17-75, 1-18-75. Quarter toners from Lake Canyon YC will also be participating this year. Dave Hasti, last years winner has graciously volunteered to run this years races. It should be a fun event.

Annual Overnight Regatta ......•.

The 6th annual Lake Travis Cruising Assoc. overnight race was a great success. Congratulations to first time winner, Charles Baltzer who won not only lst in class and 1st overall, but also turned in the fastest elapsed time. Dennis Aubrey placed 2nd. Dennis being a 2 time past winner, was last seen screaming, "just wait until next .year!" Rod Malone was 3rd, with Russell Painton 4th, and John 01 i ve ri a 5th • ·

In the cruisi.ng class, Mark Rylander finished first {in a boat that wa~ launched the day before,J2nd to LTCA member Dick Van Hooser, 3r d, LTCA member Jim Kendall.

Twenty-seven boats participated. The race was approximately 54 miles round trip, with Cow Creek being the turning mark. The starting times began at 3:30 pm to 5:53 p.m. and the finishing times were from 3:10 am to 6:30 am. During the race numerous boats were seen modifying the underwater terrain of Lake Travis and it is rumored that Russell Painton has ordered a pair of training wheels for the keel of his Ca 1 25 ! ! I A cabin was. rented and some of gals got up early to prepare breakfast for the hungry sailors. Every one enjoyed this race and look ' forward to next year where better and bigger strategy will no doubt be planned.

Fireball Fleet News ... by Mickey Wilkins

About the biggest happening unfortunately in the Fireball Fleet occured in mid Nov. when Linda McDavitt's Fireball burned while in dry storage. Quick action by Tom Clark and others prevented much damage to her trailer and possibly prevented many boats from burning. Her boat was a total loss. Luckily it was insured, but for Linda and the rest of us it was quite a shock. Linda is such a tough competitor and a super girl we hope she will get another boat ready for the Spring. Cause of the fire, which, incidently, was hot enough to melt her aluminum boom, has not yet bee"n-aetermined; however reasonably creditable speculation as to the origin of the fire may, or at least should cause some AYC members to reflect on their parental obligations.

On a lighter side a "Wake" was held for Linda's Fireball at the Nelm's home. The Eulogy was given by none other than Father(?) John Lohr! Several of the more memorable (and printable) lines were: " •.. For as ~uch as it hath pleased the almighty Fireball in the Sky of his great mercy to take unto himself the soul of our heireses and joy, we therefQr commit her hull to the deep, a location she hath already spent some time in, and we beseech the Fireball Association to retireth the No. US6508 by their grace. Glass to Earth, Resin to Ashes, Aluminum to Aluminum Oxide, in sure and certain hope of the ressurection to eternal life through the Great Fireball in the Sky who shall change the body of our low estate that it may be fasioned like unto a 12 Meter or at least a Thistle or M-20 according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. Amen. 11

Everyone 'knew Linda had a hot boat because she won the Fall Series, but, good

. f ... gr1e ...... .

Mark Rylander pulled out another 1st place in the Winter Series using various crews - it doesn't seem to make any difference which one. He still is super fast. Mickey Wilkins came in his usual

second place for the 4th series in a row -Would anyone like Mark in their fleet? Mark claims he is making many super changes to his boat to be even ·faster next spring. Doug Connally is improving his boat (if thats possible!) in hopes of catching "the Kid. 11

Another threat to Mark's #1 position may come from a new Dynamic Duo 1:tho may not "smoke" the fleet, but could be th~t most vocal in discussions as to where the spinnaker pole may be stowed!

I urge all Fireballers and anyone interested in sailing a Fireball to call me. Ideal total crew weight runs about 250 to 320 lbs. ~ with a 120 to 150 lb. crew on the wire for most of our wind conditions. We will have a Fireball Mid-Winters prior to the Spring Series. Anyone wanting to sail a great boat (minimum hull wiehgt is only 50 lb. more than a Laser!) to call me. There are good boats for sail (sale too) and charter. Try it - you'll like it.

FLASH1FLASH1FLASH1SLASHl by Jane Van Praag

Two of our prestigeous membership saw their name in print this past month.

A letter clarifying detail on an article several months back on sailing jargon origins, written by Bob Strohm, was published in the current issue of Sail Magazine. ·

Liz Bozyan was featured in an article about astronomy as observed (get it7) at McDonald Observatory in the latest Texas Monthly. Her field is radio astronomy and she was doing some graduate work at the time. Gosh I used to like her before I knew she was so smart! How am I gonna talk to her now? I mean, how do I ge t on her wave-length?

Marshall Ford Marina Lake1tavis THE BEST OF BOAT WORLDS

n you own a large boat you will want to know about our new DRYDOCK

HOW DOES IT WORK? The ORYDOCK deck is sunk by flooding buoyancy compartments. After a boat is positioned in the DRYDOCK, the compartments are emptied. The ORYDOCK raises the boat safely clear of the water and provides a large, stable work floor for an hour's careful inspection or a week of major repairs. No need for divers. No fussing with trailers or towing. ·

DRYDOCK CAPACITY Beam: 16' maximum . Length: 40' and.more Weight: 30,000 pounds

There is nothing else like this on the Highland Lakes. Here is the answer when your boat needs any type of hull, engine, and outdrive inspection, maintenance or repairs.
