CTA Spotlight: Aitkin, Minn., & Aitkin Community Tennis Association Aitkin, Minn., is a community of 2,000 people located in central Minnesota about 135 miles northeast of St Cloud. Their CTA (Aitkin Community Tennis Association) currently serves approximately 40 adults and 70 kids. Tennis programs offered include adult and junior lessons, adult leagues and a junior tennis tournament - the Carl Walz Memorial Tournament. The CTA has operated since 1996. Due to the high amount of interest in tennis in the community, the school district has added both boys and girls high school tennis.

Aiken has a five-court facility that is owned and maintained by the high school. The high school allows the CTA to use the courts throughout the summer. Joe Walz and his wife, Cindy, have been instrumental in running this CTA since 1996. They credit the success of their CTA to the many volunteers who help keep these programs going. Joe and Cindy also feel that the success of their program is enhanced by the high school tennis teams. The visibility of tennis at the high school level not only results in kids wanting to try the game because they can play high school tennis, but also encourages adults who have kids in the high school program to try the game.

The success of tennis in Aitkin illustrates some important points that CTA boards should always keep in mind. No matter how small the community, it is possible to have a vibrant and thriving tennis program. However, this can only be done with an enthusiastic and dedicated group of volunteers. These grassroots initiatives can dramatically affect the number of people who both try and play tennis. The key to successful tennis communities is the recruitment and retention of good volunteers. CTA boards must always be on the lookout for volunteers who will enhance their programs. These volunteers pay big dividends in the number of participants in the programs.
