The Republic of China (Taiwan) was founded in 1912, making the first democratic republic in Asia. It lies off the southeastern coast of mainland Asia, across the Taiwan Strait from China. Taiwan enjoys warm weather all year round, and the raining season is March to May. With a dynamic food culture, hot-spring villages, temple towns and adventures in both shopping malls and forests, Taiwan is viewed as one of Asia’s most diverse destinations.

In Hualien, here is an abundance of food and local delights to try. A few of the eateries are “must eat” if you visit Hualien. Ziqiang night market is always the best place to find local delights. You can find Taiwanese spring rolls, coffin sandwich, Taiwanese sausage, fried pork ribs, exploding chicken rolls, fresh juices and of course, the pearl milk tea in the night market. It is great to have a refreshing bowl of shaved ice dessert flavoured with caramel syrup and condensed milk with the red beans during summertime. Chewy and yummy mochi with new flavours is one of the most famous local specialties in Hualien, too.

Tzu Chi University

Tzu Chi University is a famous landmark in Hualien. It’s only a 5-minute drive from Hualien train station. Because it is located beside the Central Mountain Range, spectacular natural scenery comes into view whenever you gaze out from the windows. Tzu Chi University was established by Master Cheng Yen in 1994 in the ester region of Taiwan, educating the students to become the ones who devote themselves to help others. With the motto“ kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity”, Tzu Chi blends professionalism with humanitarianism and expects us to do so even after we graduate from school.
