Contents of this presentation

o To help with the current emergency, we’ve created a virtual v:\distrib folder! o Called “Web distrib”, there is a link to it on most CADD course topical index

pages (the course weekly outline). o You can also go to it by entering the address “trantor.sheridanc.on.ca/v”

Using the Virtual V:\distrib folder

o The distrib folder on the V: drive is where you will find many useful resources for your cad work.

o The online web distrib folder is very useful, but accessing it can be awkward.

o Fortunately, you can use the real V: drive on your computer by using Sheridan’s VPN.

Using the Virtual V:\distrib folder

o A VPN is a “Virtual Private Network”. o Think of it as a ‘secure tunnel’ through the

internet, connecting your computer to the college network resources.

o When you are connected to Sheridan’s VPN, it will seem as if you are directly connected to Sheridan’s private network. Any request for data addressed to Sheridan will go through the VPN ‘tunnel’, while the rest of your data goes to the public internet.

What is a VPN? (Simplified)

Sheridan’s private network:

servers and printers

Your Laptop or computing device at home

The Internet

The VPN connection

Installing Cisco AnyConnect

o In the virtual V:\distrib folder you will find the AnyConnect app (PC version). Download and install it.

o You’ll be able to access your O: and V: drives, and use Dreamweaver and other software like if you were physically at the college.

o You can also connect to the CADLAB printers and plotters.

Connecting to V:\distrib and your O: drive

o After Installing Anyconnect and running the app, it should show up in the system tray.

o Right-click the Icon and connect to “vpn.sheridancollege.ca” o Log in with you SLATE username and password. o You are in the College!

Not connected Connected and secured

Connecting to V:\distrib and your O: drive

o You can now map the two network drives in the college.

o Right-click on This PC, and select Map Network drive.

o Connect one drive (preferably V: ) to \\trantor.sheridanc.on.ca\distrib

o Make sure to select “Connect using different credentials”

o Enter “CADLAB\username”, where username is your CAD lab login.

o Enter your CAD lab password.

Connecting to V:\distrib and your O: drive

o Use the same technique to connect your O: drive.

o For folder, enter \\solaria.sheridanc.on.ca\username$”, where username is your CAD lab login.

o (Don’t forget the $) o Make sure to select “Connect using

different credentials” and login as before.

Not connected

o When you are done and want to disconnect: Close any software using the V: and/or O: drives. Right-click on This PC, and select “Disconnect network drive”. Disconnect both V: and O: In the System tray, right-click the Anyconnect VPN icon. Select Disconnect.

Connecting to V:\distrib and your O: drive

o For semester 6 students (for CADD32710): o You do the same thing with Adobe Dreamweaver.

In Dreamweaver, configure the site. Use AnyConnect to connect to the College using VPN. Now use the FTP tools in Dreamweaver to connect, put and

get files.

Connecting to V:\distrib and your O: drive

o In most architectural firms you will find a variety of printing devices.

o All offices will have a small format printer that will print letter and possibly tabloid sizes, and some will have A4 and A3 paper as well.

o Some offices will have a large format printer (a plotter) that will plot large size sheets, and some offices will have a large format plotter set up and send the plots to a printing service.

o You should install one of the small format ones (like mi-B414-e1) and one of the large (KIP) plotters so you can practice setting up layouts and pages.

Installing the CAD Lab printers

o The CAD Labs has a long list of help pages to help you with lab related issues.

o Go to

“trantor.sheridanc.on.ca”. o Click “CAD Lab Help”.

Installing the CAD Lab printers

o Make sure you are connected to the college using the Cisco AnyConnect app.

o Connect to your O: drive. o On the CAD lab support page, click “(HMC2) CAD Lab

Printer Setup for Student Windows 10 Laptops”. o Follow the steps. Add the “mi-b414-e1” and “mi-b414-

kip1” printers to your computer.

Installing the CAD Lab printers

o You will be required to set up your CAD files to plot to the printers. This is an important skill you will need when you work in a real architectural firm.

o Please note: You can plot to the plotters in the CAD lab, but the printers

will not print this semester. In the CADD course assignments, you will need to submit the

original CAD files and in some cases a PDF plot as well. In most Studio courses you will most likely print to an Acrobat

printer (PDF file) and submit the PDF file.
