How will you create a social movement
around health and wellbeing?

A bit about us… @HWBInspiration
What compelled us to get involved?
Over half (57%) of UK employees have
suffered from mental health problems while
in employment, and a third (33%) say their
employer approaches mental health issues in
a negative way (Canada Life Group Insurance
2016)
The cost to employers due to presenteeism
because of mental health problems was 1.8 times
that of absenteeism (The Sainsbury Centre for
Mental Health 2007)
The evidence… Work is generally
beneficial to people’s
physical and mental
health and well-
being, although this
is dependent on the
nature and quality of
the work being
undertaken (Waddell & Burton, 2006)

Leading the social movement?
• At an individual level – what can you do to model good health and wellbeing?
• At a team level – what can you do to promote good health and wellbeing in your team?
• At an organisational level – what can you do to promote good health and wellbeing in your organisation?
• At a system level – what can you do to promote health and wellbeing in your system?
• At a community level – what can you do to promote good health and wellbeing in your community?
HSE Management Standards:
• Demands: workload, work patterns, and the work environment
• Control: How much say the person has in the way they do their work
• Support: encouragement, sponsorship and resources provided by the organisation, line management and colleagues
• Relationships: promoting positive working to avoid conflict and dealing with unacceptable behaviour
• Role: Whether people understand their role within the organisation and whether the organisation ensures that they do not have conflicting roles
• Change: How organisational change (large or small) is managed and communicated in the organisation.
Leading the social movement…
• Pair work on the competency indicator tool – rate self on scale 1-10 on the four areas?
• What’s in place in your organisation to enable you to feel confident around these four areas?
• You have a team meeting what are the five questions you could ask to keep HWB high on the agenda?
Top tips • Lead by example • Build confidence on mental health • Normalise mental health • Take stock • Be available for staff • Treat people as individuals • Embed employee engagement • Create opportunities for coaching learning and development • Promote positive work relationships • Raise awareness
