Regional Exporting Approaches: Germany

• Exports accounted for 47% of GDP in 2010.• SMEs account for 98% of German exporters.

• Transportation and manufacturing are most export-dependent.

• Many have high-technology, research and development-intensive, high-value exports.

• Regional cluster internationalization strategies.• Each region has a development bank that enables

SMEs to access business development loans.

Brookings Institute Export Strategies

• Four pilot U.S. metropolitan area export plans:• Syracuse, NY; Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN; Los Angeles, CA;

Portland, OR.• All had new-to-export program recommendations.

• Three were one-on-one programs linking new exporters with established exporters.

• Identified specific target industries for export development.

• Developed regional marketing strategies for exports.
