What are TAGs ???

If I were more like Derek Wade,

I could spend the next 20 minutes

telling you the history of TAGs

and all you ever wanted to know

about ‘toe tags’

and ‘price tags’

and ‘red tag specials’ …

But I am not nearly so loquacious …

What are TAGs ???So Quite Simply Put …

TAGs

are

ADJUSTMENTS

Why do we use TAGs ???

Why do we use TAGs ???

Overcome Defensive Adjustments

• Crashing Defensive Ends

• Blitzing Corners

• Blitzing Outside Linebackers

Why do we use TAGs ???

Overcome Defensive Adjustments

• Crashing Defensive Ends

• Blitzing Corners

• Blitzing Outside Linebackers

Overcome Defensive Advantages

• Talent, Talent, Talent

• Size, Size, Size

Why do we use TAGs ???Bottom Line is …

Sometimes we need to:

• Create a ‘bubble’

• Create a mismatch (in our favor)

• Move a Defensive Stud

• Outnumber a Defense ‘Presnap’

Many Offenses accomplish the above by using Multiple Formations.

Why do we use TAGs ???• In fact, many coaches are much more comfortable looking for mismatches in personnel instead of reading a defense to see when they over commit to TOSS so we can run a COUNTER play.

• Different Coaches are wired differently. And apparently the same is true of different players.

• How many of you have had this conversation with a player ???

Why do we use TAGs ???TAGs allow us the benefits of:

• Multiple Formations

• Large Playbooks

But without the drawbacks:

• Teaching each formation individually

• Teaching each play individually

Teach your players from ‘day one’ that nothing ever changes unless you

hear YOUR TAG !!!

How do we use TAGs ???We use 3 types of TAGs:

How do we use TAGs ???We use 3 types of TAGs:

1. Pre-Snap Alignment• forces the defense to ‘recognize’

• if they fail, we get an advantage

• if they fail, we get an advantage

2. Shift Alignment• forces the defense to ‘react’

• quick reactions are often wrong

2. Shift Alignment• forces the defense to ‘react’

3. Play Adjustment• changes the way we run a play

• new path to the same destination

How do we use TAGs ???PLAY CALLING

Formation + Play + Snapcount

• We flip our the entire formation so we use a strength/formation call.

• Brown = Right & Black = Left

• We use a simple system of descriptive words or phrases to call plays.

• Early each year we call the Snapcount but by midseason the kids just know what each play is on so that disappears.

Example Play Call - BROWN TOSS on GO

How do we use TAGs ???PLAY CALLINGTo add a Formation TAG, we place the TAG right after the strength call. For teams that stay in double tight and don’t flip, this would become your formation call.

• Example Play Call - BROWN TOSS on GO

• With OVER TAG - BROWN OVER TOSS on GO

To add a Play Adjustment TAG, we place the TAG right after the play call.

• Example Play Call - BROWN TOSS on GO

• With KEEP TAG - BROWN TOSS KEEP on GO
