– tastefully

– without creating distraction

Page 11: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Accuracy

• It is essential that the words on the

screen match those in the hymn book

Page 12: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Legibility

• Size of text

• Font

• Colours

• Spelling

Page 13: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

choice as they are easy to read

– Arial

–Verdana

– Tahoma

• Decorative typefaces are difficult to read

– Curlz

–Jokerman

Page 16: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Font

• You may be surprised about:

–Comic sans• Which is a very popular font but reviled

by many

– try Googling “I hate comic sans”!

Page 17: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Colours

• Choose contrasting colours for

red-green colour blind

Page 18: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Legality

• Be very sure that you have permission

to use a picture or other media

– acknowledge where required

– useful sources

• free image websites e.g.

• Wikipedia (many images are public domain)

• American Government agencies (media are

usually public domain by default)

Page 28: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Consistency

• To avoid confusion keep the same basic

font and layout for each verse

• If you use picture backgrounds it might

be appropriate to change the picture if it

supports the verse

Page 29: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Robustness

• Don’t make things so complicated that

the slideshow fails

– especially applies to animation triggered by

mouse-clicks

– remember that whoever operates the

projector is a participant in the service and

should not lose out

Page 30: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Taste

• A very personal matter!

– putting extras on a slide is fine if it supports

the message

Page 31: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Distraction-free

• Remember why we are producing the

slideshow

• We do not want anyone’s eyes to ―trip‖

over any of the elements on the slide

Page 32: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Distraction-free

• Even subtle layouts might distract

– inappropriate animation

– inappropriate sound effects

– ―breaking the fourth wall‖

• aim to make the congregation unaware of the

computer

• simplest way is to make the whole service into

one slideshow

Page 33: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Avoiding distractions

• A matter of taste and judgement

• A pure black background

– will not project the edge of the slide

– all the congregation will see is your content

– alignment problems with the projector are

less noticeable

Page 34: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Putting it all together

• Start with a blank slide

– Right click on the slide

– Choose (Slide) Layout and then Blank

(options appear in the right sidebar in

2003)

• Decide if you want to use a background

picture

Page 35: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Pictures

• Adding pictures

– choose a picture which is reasonably

simple

– needs a large area of uniform colour

– the font colour will need to contrast with the

picture

Page 36: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Pictures

• Adding pictures

– If possible reduce the size of pictures you

have taken yourself

– If you insert the picture after having done

the text you will need to ―send the picture

to the back‖

Page 37: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Adding text

• Once you have your background sorted

out add the hymn text

• You may be able to copy the text from

somewhere else (e.g. Family Friendly

Churches website) and paste it in

– use Paste Special and then ―Unformatted

Text‖ rather than just plain Paste

Duplicating slides

• Once you have created the first slide of

a hymn duplicate it however many times

is needed

– remember to create enough copies for

each verse and an extra copy if there is a

chorus

– perhaps do an extra copy to use as a blank

after the hymn

Page 54: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Page 57: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Duplicating slides

• Then edit the words on each slide to

match the verse

– if you use a counter update that as well

• Make sure the last slide has the

copyright acknowledgement

Page 58: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Duplicating slides—chorus

• On the chorus copy edit the words to

match the chorus

– change the counter to say ―Chorus‖

• Then duplicate the Chorus slide for

however many choruses there are

Page 59: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …

Sorting the slides

• After all that duplicating you need to get

the verses and choruses in the right

order

• Change to ―Slide Sorter‖ view

Page 60: Using PowerPoint slide then release the Shift key –then drag the whole group of slides to where you want Title Using PowerPoint Author Julian Cooper …
