Integrating Language Central 6–10

Program Highlights

Teaching a Unit

Language Central is an English language development program that you can use alongside Prentice Hall Literature, Reality Central, or any other core reading program. This program includes instruction to help ELLs delve deeper into the critical vocabulary and comprehension skills that are taught in the core program.

Students learn and practice vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar skills every day. Teaching scripts and leveled support help differentiate instruction to address all language proficiency levels.

Language Central provides six units of instruction featuring the same Big Questions that are used in the core program. Program components include the Teacher’s and student editions, Vocabulary Cards, and graphic organizers.

Program Highlights include teaching a unit, instructional features, embedded resources, and evaluating student achievement.

Every Language Central unit begins with a Table of Contents, which presents and discusses objectives. Units are organized thematically around a Big Question. The Big Question provides a starting point for building understanding of the unit’s key concept and academic vocabulary.

Each unit follows a systematic and logical sequence of daily and weekly lesson plans. The Vocabulary Workshop acquaints students with Big Question vocabulary and the key vocabulary skills taught in the core program. Leveled Support provides suggestions for differentiating instruction to meet students’ needs based on their English language proficiency levels and allows students to access the material on the page.

Instructional Features

The Oral Communication Project helps students think about and make connections to the Big Question. This project provides students with the opportunity to develop and deliver oral presentations. Students work on their presentations over the course of the unit and use graphic organizers to organize their ideas and to plan their presentations.

The Unit Review and Unit Wrap-Up give students a chance to provide evidence of understanding at the end of the unit.

Your planning starts with the Teacher’s Edition, which provides easy-to-use, step-by-step lesson planning tools.

The Weekly Planner displays five days of instruction. The flexible weekly lesson plan integrates a coherent design that helps you organize instruction around clear, attainable language and content objectives.

Throughout your Teacher’s Edition, you will find correlations to Prentice Hall Literature and Reality Central as well as information about relevant Common Core State Standards. You will also find point-of-use references to key vocabulary and tips about technology resources that support instruction.

In addition, every component of the Pearson English Learning System is incorporated throughout the Teacher’s Edition. Instructional materials were carefully designed to make lesson planning, pacing, teaching, and assessment easier.

Your Teacher’s Edition provides instructional objectives and a list of lesson materials needed for each day of instruction. The Dialogue feature provides definitions and practice for new vocabulary. The Teacher’s Edition also provides short, informational text passages followed by discussion activities.
