Using ICT in Teaching and Learning: Is It Necessary?

Development of ICT now influences many aspects of human life. Several decades

ago, the use of ICT had been integrated into human activities despite in more simply

technology. For example: the switching of scoring board in soccer sport; from conventional

scoring board to digital scoring board, the use of calculator in trading world, and many more

development of technology where all of them extremely give massive impact to people. In

education, the integration of technology overcomes the lacks of teaching learning process

thus make it become more effective teaching and learning. Even, the tendency of using ICT

in teaching and learning has become a trend around the educators circle for years. Salaberry

(2001) stated that the implementation of technology in education had served in a long history

(cited in zhao 2003). The technology changes extremely for recent years as well as gives

impact to the integration of ICT in educational circle.

Due to the development of technology is very fast and continuously in educational

circle, so that many experts try to define the term of ICT. Tinio (2002) defined ICT as a set of

various technological tools that purposed to interacted, create, save, and recycle information.

She included computer, internet, radio, television, and telephony as a set of technology tools.

Tinio (2002) also emphasized that the most popular technologies today are computer and

internet for improving students skill. Rather, she said that ICT is not only about computer

and internet because we still have the older technologies which have also important role in

the past, those are telephone, radio, and television. Initially, in teaching and learning process,

the role of all of those technologies can be very important. However, newhouse (2002)

underlined that the educators still has debated for the use of ICT in term of how the ICT

should be used in order to encourage teaching and learning process and what the teacher

expected from the students after using ICT.

For most of reasons and uses, ICT will give lot of opportunities for teaching andlearning. However, for some reasons the experts also against the use of ICT in teaching and

learning, since they discussed about the financial and the teachers role issues. Firstly, we

will discuss the benefits for using ICT in teaching and learning process. The main

opportunities that offered by ICT will be discussed below that are adopted to the point of

view of Jonassen et al. (1999) who acknowledged a system to create an active, authentic, and

cooperative learning through technology-enhanced meaningful learning.

The main benefits of ICT, ICT (particularly internet) allows the learners to obtain

the authentic material which has relevancy with their material, so that they can learn in

meaningful ways in authentic context. Teaching and learning can also involve the use of mass

media as an authentic source of information in a classroom. Newhouse (2002) claimed the

main reason for asking students in using ICT in teaching and learning was to accustomed

students in giving feedback the current issues from a mass as information sources. Student

will learn many particular knowledge, lessons, terms, and experiences from the authentic

    material which is discussed.

The second benefit in using ICT, teacher may create cooperative and collaborative

learning in a classroom. Internet allows both teacher and students to do interaction with the

others in or out of class. The teacher may open a teleconferencing class that addressed to a

community out of class, as long as related to the material. The benefit of teleconferencing has

explained by Tinio (2002) who recognized the use of teleconferencing which can be applied

in formal or non formal educational system to mediate an interaction between teacher-learner

and learner-learner or to obtain the others trusted material remotely. The activities such as

chatting and sending email also enhance students writing skill and all of those activities

accustom student to interact without feeling a fear to make mistake.

The Third benefit that offeredis the use of ICT- based tools easier teachers controls

their students skill more efficient. Teacher may use video, tape recorder, or authentic

material to adjust the material with their students ability. In certain cases, teacher may do

repetition to certain material which is considered still needed. Moreover, this technology also

allows teachers emphasizes to certain material for ensuring the students understanding.

For those reasons the presence of ICT in teaching and learning is considered

necessary. The benefits of ICT help to promote students ability, since ICT create a new

situations in a classroom to become more interactive, various, and interesting for students.

These benefits build a particular perception about dependence to ICT in enhancing teaching

and learning despite in the field this perception was not really applicable due to the

collaboration between ICT and conventional class still needed. Unfortunately in the other

sides, the existence of ICT in teaching and learning has opposed because the presence of ICT

considered do not give too much affect towards teaching and learning.

A doubt attitude towards existence of ICT has ever been expressed by some experts.

The benefits which have been offered not directly convinced a number of people to include in

euphoria of using technology into classroom. So, whats wrong with ICT in their opinion?

Firstly, some experts assumed that the use of technology in educational world need too much

money, whereas the outcomes of this not equal with what they have paid to served the

technology. This is what Healy (1999) argued, that too much money that must be spent with

only very little thought would be received (cited in Bax 2009). Secondly, the inability of ICT

to replace human position was become the main excuse of a number of people to reject ICT

in teaching and learning. The ability of technology, particularly in computer to provide an

appropriate feed back (e.g. in grammar checker) become the most weakness of technology in

education so that cant change the human teacher roles. Further, Zhao (2003) claimed that the

answers that provided by ICT was not always correct, since the technology can not analyses

the depth of level structure and can not show semantic analysis.

Finally, as the conclusion, the development of technology has forced most of people

to adjust their life into a technological life. Almost all of human aspects perceived the impact

of the presence of technology, included in teaching and learning. However, the existence of

ICT in education is still debatable since they bring the benefits and also the weakness towards

the teaching and learning. In spite of all weakness and benefits of ICT, the served of ICT

cannot be avoided. Now, the best way to educators is still implementing the ICT in education

and still giving attention to the weakness by minimizing them. The combination between

technology and human teacher may be very appropriate because technology can replace

teacher role in providing material and the human teacher stay get their portion in explaining

    and giving feedback to students.
