Using ICT in a senior classroom
Using ICT in a senior classroom
Literacy unit focusing on Myths and Legends
Before the lessons
Relevant school journal story was photocopied and then scanned into the computer.
By copying first it allows the printer to send the file condensed into a single pdf.
You may need to rotate some of the pages and save the pdf so that it can be viewed correctly.
Next...
The pdf file was imported into a notebook file so it could be used on the mimio.
You can either import using the file drop down menu or simply drag it across into your open notebook page.
We read a shared text and used the mimio to model an entry into the graphic organiser. The children would be using this as their follow up
task.
While I was working with one group there were three other groups at work in the classroom.
Two groups were using a computer to watch and listen to a digital story.
One of these groups were using headphones to minimise noise level.
They had to also take notes in order to write a summary of the story.
After reading Battle of the Mountains we used google maps to find out
where the mountains are now.

The third group were using the mimio to highlight parts of the scanned text.
They focused on finding the setting, the main characters, the main ideas and what the myth/legend was trying to teach us or explain.
Final Assessment
We read two big books as shared
texts. Then on the mimio I modelled how to
fill in a venn diagram.
The whole class generated the
ideas.
The final step involved each child choosing two texts that
they had read, and completing a venn diagram.
How you could integrate the unit further....
Study local maori myths and legends
Students to write their own myth/legend using the programme on the previous website http://myths.e2bn.org/story_creator/
Students to highlight the parts of the myth/legend involving speech and turn it into a play. Present the play to class/school!
Why could this benefit your class?
Using digital texts and the mimio alongside traditional texts, caters for dyslexic students, visual, aural and kinaesthetic learners
It has the appeal of working on a computer
It allows less confident readers to access more advanced vocabulary in a non-threatening environment
Text
