YoushouldalsobeawarethatI’maWindowsuser.IdevelopedtheseinstructionsbasedonmyexperiencesworkingwithSibelius6.2andHauptwerk4onMicrosoftWindows7HomePremium.IdonothaveaMacintosh,nordoIhaveMacversionsofSibeliusorHauptwerk—thistutorialhasbeenreviewed,andused,byseveralMacusers,butyoumaystillencountersurprises.

Whatversionsaresupported?IoriginallywrotethisspecificallyforusersofSibelius6.2—thecurrentrelease.However,anumberofusersofSibelius5havecontactedme.Ipostedarevisedsetoffiles,withscoresandManuscriptPapersavedasversion5files,andtheyreportedlywork.IfyouhaveSibelius5.2orlater,ontheMacoronWindows,thistutorialshouldwork.

InstallingHauptwerk4toworkwithSibeliusCRUCIALPOINT:whenyouinstallHauptwerk4youMUSTchoosetheCustomInstalloption.That’swhereyouspecifywheretheHauptwerkVSTlibrariesareinstalled.Onceyouhaveinstalled,youcan’tchangetheirlocationinHauptwerk.Ifyoumissedthisstep,youwillhavetoreinstall.

InstallingHauptwerk4isstraightforward—andit’sexhaustivelydocumented.ForyouasaSibeliususertheonlysignificantissueismakingsuretochoosetheCustomInstalloption.YouneedtodoaCustomInstallinordertotelltheHauptwerkinstallationprogramwheretoplacetheVSTlibraries.

WhereshouldVSTfilesbeinstalled?Thespecificlocationwilldependuponyouroperatingsystem,andwhatchoicesyoumadewhenyouinstalledSibelius.ThesimplestwaytofigureoutwhereHauptwerkshouldinstalltheVSTfilesistolookonyourAudioEngineOptionsdialog:

OnceyouhavecompletedtheHauptwerkinstallation,comebacktothisdialogandclickonthe“Rescan”buttontodisplayHauptwerk4inyourlistofVSTs.



ShouldyouuseanalternateHauptwerk4configuration?Beforewebegin,rememberthatHauptwerk4installsfourdifferentconfigurations.Letmeencourageyou—strongly—torenameoneofthosealternateinstancesto“Hauptwerk–Sibelius”orsomethingsimilar.Makeyourconfigurationchangesthere,andtestthem.Thatway,ifthere’sanykindofproblem,youhavenotbrokenyourprincipalHauptwerkconfiguration.

Help!Ican’tlaunchHauptwerkfromtheSibeliusMixer!WithHauptwerk3,youhadoneinstancethatwasconfiguredas“standalone”—youlaunchedthatinstancebydouble‐clickinganicononyourdesktop,anditmadesoundwhenyoupressedkeysonyourMIDIkeyboard.YouhadaseparateinstancethatranasaVSTplug‐in—andyoulaunchedthatbyclickingontheplug‐ininterfacebuttonontheSibeliusMixer.WithHauptwerk4,thingsaredifferent—clickontheplug‐ininterfacebuttonontheSibeliusMixerandallyou’llseeisthis:

Try to launch Hauptwerk 4 from the Sibelius Mixer, and all you’ll see is this.

Hauptwerk4usesacompletelynewarchitecture—named“VSTLink”—tointegratewithVSThostapplicationslikeSibelius.ThereisstillaVSTplug‐inloadedintoSibelius—but,incomputerterms,itisavery“thin”plug‐inthatonlyprovidestwo‐waycommunicationwithastandaloneinstanceofHauptwerk.There’salotofcomputerarchitecturebehindthischange—thekeypointsyouneedtounderstandare:

1. YounolongerlaunchHauptwerkfromtheSibeliusMixer.2. YouhavetomanuallylaunchyourHauptwerkinstancefromthedesktop(orStartmenu).3. YouhavetoconfigureyourHauptwerkinstance(everyinstanceyouwillusewithSibelius)

torouteitsaudiooutputbacktoSibelius,ratherthantoanaudiodevice.



ConfiguringHauptwerk4toworkwithSibelius6DuringtheHauptwerk4installationyouareaskedwhetheryouwillbeusingHauptwerkwithaMIDISequencer;youarealsoaskedwhichoftheinstalledaudiodevicesonyourcomputerwillbeusedforoutput.Ifyougetconfusedbyallthequestions(beenthere)youmayprovidethewronganswers(donethat)andfindthatwhenyouplayascore,theplaybacklineinSibeliusmoves,butnosoundplays(gotthet‐shirt).Inthissectionwe’llmakesureyouhavetherightoptionsselectedinHauptwerk4.

ConfiguringMIDIinputfromSibeliusYouwillneedtotellHauptwerkthatyouwillbeprovidinginputfromasequencerapplication(Sibelius)ratherthan(oralongwith)aMIDIconsole.Todothat,choose

GeneralSettings>MIDIPorts…

The MIDI Ports dialog.

Makesurethat“SequencerMIDIIN(advancedusage)”ischeckedforthe“HauptwerkVSTLink”entry.(IfyouareonlyusingHauptwerkasaVSTyouwillonlyseethisline.IfyouareusingotherMIDIinputs,suchasanorganconsole,youwillseemoreoptions.)



ConfiguringaudiooutputtoSibeliusWhenyouusedHauptwerk3asaVSTplug‐in,itsaudiooutputwasautomaticallyroutedthroughtheSibeliusMixer.ThenewVSTLinkarchitectureallowsyoutospecifywhetheryouwantaudiooutputtobesentdirectlytoanaudiodevice(forexample,anASIOdriver),ortotheVSTLink.

SendaudiooutputtotheSibeliusMixerovertheVSTLink.

Thekeywordinpointcis“exactly”—acrucialpartofaccurateplaybackisanextremelyaccuratesenseoftiming.YouuseSibeliustocreateandsendMIDIcommandswithexacttiming—whatcomputerfolkscall“lowlatency”or“highpriority.”Yourcomputeroperatingsystemdoesabunchofthingsallthetime—youdonotwantplaybackofyournewtoccatatobedelayed—evenslightly—ifyourcomputerdecidesthatnowwouldbeasplendidtimetocheckfornewemail.Alow‐latencydriverwilltellyouremailprogramtowait,becauseyourmusichasahigherpriorityandcannotbeinterrupted.That’swhyyoushoulduseanASIOdriver,oranotherlow‐latencyaudiodriver—toensurethatyourMIDIcommandsaresentwithexacttimingprecision.

But—there’sacatch:youcannotuseanASIOaudiodriverwithmorethanoneapplicationatatime.

YoucanconfigureSibeliustousetheASIOdriver. YoucanconfigureHauptwerktousetheASIOdriver. Butwhenyoulaunchboth,thefirstapplicationtolaunchwillbetheonlyonetoactually

connecttothatASIOaudiodevice—thesecondapplicationwilljustnotproduceanysound.

Therearetwowaystodealwiththisproblemfeature:

1. UsetheASIOdriverwithSibelius,tosendaccurateMIDIsignalstoHauptwerk;routeHauptwerk’saudiooutputbackovertheVSTLinktotheSibeliusMixer

2. UsetheASIOdriverwithHauptwerk,andconfigureSibeliustouseanotheraudiodriver(forWindowsusers,DirectSound)tosendMIDIsignals.

Thecorrectansweris“number1.”

There’sanaddedbenefittothis:ifyouwanttouseanotherVSTlibrary(forexample,toaddatrumpetfromGarritanPersonalOrchestraorSibeliusSounds)thatVSTwillsenditsaudiooutputtotheSibeliusMixer.Unlessyourcomputersupportsmultiple,simultaneousaudiotodifferentoutputs,andyourcomputeriswiredtoanexternalmixer,you’renotgoingtogetbothsounds.RoutingeverythingthroughtheSibeliusMixermeansthatyoudo.

NOTE:IfyouhaveaMIDIconsole,thisisareallygoodreasontousemorethanoneHauptwerkinstance.IfyouareusingyourconsoletoplayHauptwerkdirectly,ratherthanusingSibeliusasaMIDIsequencer,youwillwanttoplaywithaHauptwerkinstancethatusestheASIOaudiodriverdirectly.But—ifyoudothat,besuretounloadSibelius,oryoumayfindthatSibeliushasgrabbedtheASIOdriver,andHauptwerkcan’tmakeasound.



AddingcustomHauptwerkfilestoSibelius6Sibelius6isdesignedtobeextremelyextensible—itshipswithalotoffeatures,anditallowsyoutoaddfeaturesofyourown.Inthissectionofthetutorialwe’regoingtoaddseveralfilestoyourSibeliusinstallationthatwillmakeiteasierforyoutoworkwithHauptwerk4.

Sibeliusstoresuserdatainasinglefoldernamed“SibeliusSoftware”,thatisstoredwithyouruserapplicationdata.WithinthatSibeliusSoftwarefolderthereareanumberofotherfolders—you’llcopymostoftheentriesintheZIPfiletooneoranotherofthosefolders.

Whichoperatingsystemdoyouuse?Ifyou’reaMacuser,theparentSibeliusSoftwarefoldercanbefoundat:

IfyouareusingWindowsVistaorWindows7,theparentSibeliusSoftwarefoldercanbefoundhere:

YouwillnotneedtocreatetheSibeliusSoftwarefolder—itwillalreadybethere.IfyoucannotfindtheAppDatafolder,itmaybebecausethatfolderishiddenfromviewbysecurityrestrictions(oryourfolderoptions).Ifyoucannotfindthefolder,you’llhavetodoabitofdetectivework—butSibeliuscreatedtheuserfolderwhenitinstalled.It’sthere.

OnceyouhavefoundtheSibeliusSoftwarefolder,locatethesubfoldernamed“Sibelius6”.Openthatfolder.

Your Sibelius 6 user data folder. You’ll add the custom files for Hauptwerk to four of these sub-folders.

The ZIP file includes folder information for each file. Copy the file to your Sibelius Software directory, and extract the files, using the folder information.

Ifyou’refamiliarwithZIParchivefiles,there’saneasywaytogetallofyourfilesintheproperfolders—evenifoneortwofoldersneedtobecreated.ThecustomSibeliusfilesarestoredintheZIPwiththeirdirectoryinformation—soyoucanextractthefiles,andyourZIPtoolwillplacethefilesintheproperdirectories.

I’maWinZipuser—IcanjustcopytheHauptwerkSibelius6.zipfiletomy“parent”SibeliusAppDatafolder:

C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\SibeliusSoftware

IcanthenopenthefilewithWinZip(seeabove);Icanthenclickonthe“1‐ClickUpzip”buttononthetoolbar—andallofthefileswillbeinstalled.

AssigningMIDIchannelsinSibeliusMixerOneofthenewfeaturesinHauptwerk4istheabilitytorecorddetailedMIDIoutput—withallofyourregistrationsettings—fromHauptwerk.YoucansavetheMIDIoutput,sendthefiletoafriendwhohasthesamesoundset,andyourfriendcanreplaywhatyouhaverecorded—withexactlythesameregistrationsettings.

Butthatfeaturecomeswithacost:HauptwerkusedtoallowyoutospecifywhichMIDIinputchannelshouldbeassignedtoeachdivision.Now,inHauptwerk4,MIDIchannelsarespecificallyassignedtoeachdivision.

IfyouopenascoreyoucreatedforHauptwerk3,yourscoreprobablyhastheSwellassignedtoMIDIchannel1,theGreatassignedtoMIDIchannel2,andthePedaltoMIDIchannel3(thosewerethedefaultsinHauptwerk3,andthedefaultassignmentsinSibelius).InHauptwerk4thechannelassignmentsaredifferent:

WithHauptwerk4thathastochange.AllofmyHauptwerk3scores,asIwroteabove,havetheSwellassignedtoMIDIchannel1,andthePedalassignedtoMIDIchannel3.WhenIopenthe



SibeliusMixer(seethefrontpage)IcanseewhereImightchangetheMIDIchannel—butthebuttonsaredisabled.HowdoIchangetheMIDIchannel?

IfyouhaveloadedtheHauptwerk4Playbackdevicecorrectly,andopenthePlaybackDevicesdialoginSibelius(Play>PlaybackDevices),andselecttheManualSoundSetstab,thisiswhatyou’llsee.Ifyouchecktheboxlabeled“Usemanualsoundset”youwillbeabletochangetheMIDIchannelassignmentsinSibeliusMixer.

Tip:ifyou’regoingtocreateormodifyaplaybackdevice,loadthenew“Audio,MIDIandPerformance”largecontrolpanelinHauptwerk(View>LargeFloatingControlPanels>Audio,MIDIandPerformance).Asyoutestyou’llbeabletoseeifHauptwerkisreceivingMIDIoutput,andonwhichchannel(s).

Howmanymanualsdoyouuse?ThisPlaybackConfigurationsupportsallelevenoftheorgandivisionsthatHauptwerksupports.Ifyouusetwomanualsorthree,youwon’tneedtoeditthis.



CreatinganewSoundSet?TheHauptwerk4SoundsfileprovidedwiththistutorialsupportsallthemanualsyoucanhaveinHauptwerk4.

TheonlyreasonyoumightwishtoadaptthesoundsetwouldbetospecifymanualnamesinalanguageotherthanEnglish(e.g.Pedal,GrandOrgue,RecitExpressif,Choir).TodosoyouwillhavetomanuallyedittheSibeliussoundsetfile.

SibeliussoundsetfilesarewritteninalanguagecalledExtensibleMarkupLanguage(XML).XMLis,theoretically,easytoread—butXMLisextremelyunforgivingofeventheslightestmistake.UnlessyouhaveadedicatedXMLeditor(suchasStylusStudio)thatcanvalidateanXMLDocumentagainstaDTDandanXSLstylesheet,pleasedonotattempttomodifytheHauptwerk4Sounds.xmlfile.



SibeliusHouseStyles,ManuscriptPaper,andHauptwerkYourwordprocessorsoftwareusesstylesheetstokeeptrackoffonts,paragraphsettings,pagesizes,andthingslikethat.SibeliususesHouseStylestodothat—andtostoreengravingrules,defaultpositions,andalotmore.Inparticular,SibeliususesHouseStylestostoreInstrumentDefinitions.

ThisdialogshowsthenewHauptwerk4instrumentensemblethatisincludedinthe“Blank(Hauptwerk4)”HouseStyle.YourexistingscoresforHauptwerkdonotletyouspecifywhichmanualtouseontheorgan—thisnewHouseStyledoes.But—inordertousethisensemble,youwillhavetoimporttheHouseStyleintoyourexistingscores,anduseManuscriptPaperthathasthisHouseStyleincluded.

Uh…there’saproblemInstrumentdefinitions,includingensemble,family,andinstrumentdata,areincludedinHouseStyles.Butsoareallthevisualdetailsofyourscore:thefonts,theengravingrules,everything.Ifyouareparticularaboutyourscores(andthat’swhyyouboughtSibelius,right?)thisposesaproblem:importingtheinstrumentdefinitionswilloverwritesomeofyourotherstyleinformation.

Thereisnotanelegantsolutionforthis.Thereisnowaytojustimportinstrumentdefinitions;youwillalsoimportnoteheads,clefs,symbols,andtextstylesatthesametime.



When you import a new House Style, un-check the last four boxes, to preserve your Engraving Rules and other settings.

But—thereisaworkaround:youcanupdateyourexistingHouseStyleswiththeHauptwerkinstrumentdefinitionswithjustafewsteps.ForeachHouseStyleyouhave:

1. Openanexistingscorewithyourcarefully‐craftedstyles.2. ExportyourHouseStylewithanewname:

HouseStyle>ExportHouseStyle3. SaveyourHouseStylewithauniquename—e.g.“MyStyles—Cambria12pt”4. ImportthesuppliedHouseStyle,named“Blank(Hauptwerk4)”—notethatitmaymake

yourexistingscorelookreallyodd.Thisisjusttemporary.5. Re‐importtheHouseStyleyoujustexported—“MyStyles—Cambria12pt”.Notethatyour
