Overview

These Application Notes describe the configuration steps required for MultiTech FaxFinder FF240-IP to

interoperate with the babyTEL SIP/T.38 provider. Provided are product specifics, interoperability test results,

typical setup configuration, troubleshooting steps and other important product-related information.

FaxFinder IP provides distributed faxing capabilities through an IP telephone system, allowing companies to

provide fax services to remote offices and field sales people. FaxFinder converts inbound faxes to PDF or TIFF

files and delivers them to a recipient's inbox, a network folder, or a network printer. Users can send outbound

faxes through a fax client, web browser, email, or the print function of other applications.

Outgoing faxes can be sent from the MultiTech FaxFinder Client application, from any PC application that

supports print or from the MultiTech FaxFinder web interface. For compliance testing, the FaxFinder client

application was the primary method used to send outgoing faxes.

babyTEL Service Information

The following is from babyTEL’s fax support webpage https://us.babytel.net/en/fax/support/:

Setup and Installation Will the babyTEL service work with my network setup? Yes. Simply configure your SIP compatible equipment to connect to the babyTEL network using the SIP parameters we provide. For full and proper functioning of the babyTEL service and all other features, your equipment should be set up according to the detailed instructions provided by the manufacturer in their configuration guide. Do I need a special Internet connection? Depending on your Internet usage, it may be necessary to use a separate Internet connection for your babyTEL telephone service. At least 32Kbps in bandwidth is needed for each line used for voice only. 90Kbps must be available for each line that will be used for conventional fax calls (fax machine to fax machine) and data transmission (financial transaction terminals, alarm systems, modems). The reliability of data and DTMF transmission is totally dependent on the consistent quality of your Internet connection. To use a connection shared with data traffic, you and your Internet service provider must have compatible routers that will prioritize voice packets in both directions. What happens if Internet or power goes down? You can receive your calls even if your Internet service is interrupted. You can specify any telephone number or cell phone where we will forward your calls if your IP device stops communicating with our network due to a problem at your end such as a power failure, equipment malfunction or Internet disruption. Can my SIP device connect to babyTEL from behind my firewall? Yes. However, for some firewalls you may need to make a minor adjustment to avoid a rare situation where incoming calls can be blocked by your firewall. If unsure of how to make the recommended changes below, refer to the firewall help or contact your firewall provider for assistance. Consistent NAT: Firewalls that do no not use a Consistent NAT can block incoming calls. In this situation the firewall changes the address/port to which babyTEL needs to send the incoming call. If a call arrives at that

Page 6: Using FF240-IP with babyTEL SIP/T - Multi-Tech · Optimized Internet Backbone Connectivity: ... USING FF240-IP WITH BABYTEL SIP/T.38 ... can be performed to verify proper configuration

USING FF240-IP WITH BABYTEL SIP/T.38 APPLICATION NOTES REV.0.01

6

moment, before babyTEL is notified of the new address/port, then that call will not reach your device. To avoid this, change your firewall setting to enable Consistent NAT. SIP-aware firewalls: SIP-aware firewalls can prevent calls from reaching your device. If this is the situation, disable the SIP awareness option on the firewall. Strict firewalls: In the case of very strict firewalls, such as the ones allowing traffic only on limited well-known IP ports, your incoming calls may be blocked. Add a rule to allow incoming UDP packets from nat.babytel.ca to be redirected to your device.

Technical summary on babyTEL reliability and quality measures

Redundancy and Fail Over: babyTEL service equipment is deployed in a modular infrastructure designed for high-availability with core network elements deployed in redundant, scalable configurations. Fail over strategies are in place for cases when network devices malfunction or communication links are broken.

Intelligent Outbound Routing: Typically outbound call traffic is routed through the Least Costly Route (LCR). When an outbound route fails babyTEL will automatically avoid routing outbound calls on that route. Utilizing outbound routes from at least four (4) different carriers, babyTEL is in a position to ensure near perfect outbound availability.

Strict Security Processes: Security protocols are used to protect against unauthorized access, while Session Border Control (SBC) devices and use of private addressing for core VoIP elements protect against malicious attacks.

Mission-Critical Hosting Facilities: babyTEL service equipment is hosted at secure data centers specifically designed for mission critical telecommunication applications.

Optimized Internet Backbone Connectivity: babyTEL procures Internet connectivity from providers with state of the art IP backbone networks optimized to carry traffic over fast and reliable optical fiber technology. These networks are counted among the primary backbones that comprise the Internet.

Premier Telco Carrier Peering: babyTEL connects to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) by peering with premier national and international Telco carriers.

Standards-Based Solution: The babyTEL solution was developed around a reliable, scalable communication infrastructure based on the industry standard Session Initiation Protocol (SIP).

Around-the-Clock Monitoring: Around-the-clock Network Operations Center (NOC) staff continuously monitors performance of all service equipment to ensure rapid problem detection and resolution.

FaxFinder IP Configuration

Configuration details for the FaxFinder IP can be found in the FaxFinder IP Administrator Guide. Please visit

www.multitech.com to find FaxFinder IP documentation. A brief explanation of the required setup will be described

here.

The FaxFinder IP will need to be installed on an IP network with internet access. When configured properly, the

FaxFinder IP can deliver incoming faxes to email accounts, network shares or network printers. The FaxFinder IP

supports multiple methods for sending faxes. Faxes can be sent from email using T.37 fax, FaxFinder IP web

interface Send Fax page, FaxFinder client software or via the FaxFinder IP API. Details of these methods are

described in the FaxFinder IP Administrator Guide and will not be covered here.

To simplify and verify portions of the FaxFinder IP configuration process, it is recommended that the installer

configure inbound fax routing and test fax delivery by sending a fax from the FaxFinder IP web interface Send Fax

page back to the same unit. This can be accomplished by configuring Inbound Routing in the Fax Configuration page

for delivery to a recipient at an extension such as 163. In order for the FaxFinder IP to send a fax to itself, the IP

address of the FaxFinder IP in the Network page under System Configuration must match the IP address of the SIP

Proxy/Gateway in the SIP/T.38 page under Fax Configuration. Then from the Send Fax page send the fax to the

extension number of the recipient in the Inbound Routing page. You can view the progress of the fax by navigating

to the Fax Status page under Status & Logs.

Interoperability Compliance Testing

Interoperability compliance testing covered the following features and functionality:

Proper handling of faxes via the FaxFinder channels including send/receive, external faxing, and

miscellaneous failure scenarios.

Proper handling of faxes with different pages and complexities.

Reference Configuration

One Multitech FaxFinder FF240-IP fax server configured with babyTEL SIP/T.38, using 2 active channels, sending and

receiving faxes with one Multitech FaxFinder FF840 fax server configured to use two modem ports. A traditional fax

machine was also used to send/receive faxes with the FF240-IP.

For the purposes of interoperability compliance testing, the MultiTech FaxFinder Client was used as the main

process to send faxes.

General Test Approach and Test Results The feature test cases were performed manually. Fax calls were sent using the MultiTech FaxFinder Client application. The fault insertion test cases were performed manually by disconnecting/reconnecting the Ethernet cables to MultiTech FaxFinder and/or creating a busy state on a modem port.
