Why e-learning?

Face to face disability awareness training received by around 800 clinical staff over 2 years

Delivered by a learning disability nurse and people with learning disabilities

Good evaluation, but limited reach, fixed term post (LD nurse) meant that another learning delivery needed to maintain awareness in the long-term

Project delivery

Project overseen by a working group comprising:

Head of Learning Disability Development NHS LondonNursing leaders Foundation of learning disabilities An independent consultant Education & learning lead (Imperial NHS)

Design of the module

Initial brief to include case studies and learner assessmentExisting video resources identified and permission sought to use within the module

Brief assessment includes multiple choice and free text answers

Initial focus on patients with learning disabilities Later widened to include the needs of other vulnerable patient groups

Articulate and quiz maker software utilised

Challenges

Balancing the need to ensure content relevant but aware of constraints on clinicians timeVideo resources a useful way of delivering complex content in a meaningful way; seeing the person

Focus on common principles that can be adapted to individuals patent’s needs
