Situation

• NOAA’s 200th Celebration in 2007 highlighted the rich history of science, service, and stewardship provided to the American public by NOAA and its predecessors.

• NOAA 200th Anniversary events happening around the country.

• Telling the story of NOAA.

Challenge

• Need to publish news of events from around the country, in a timely manner, using different contributors. Can’t teach them all Dreamweaver.

• Must be published on http://celebrating200years.noaa.gov/

• Have to follow the site’s editorial review process.

Solution: WordPress/RSS

• Contributors blog at http://noaa200.WordPress.com/

• http://celebrating200years.noaa.gov/ subscribes to WordPress RSS2 feed using Feed2JS parser.

WordPress

• Contributors trained in WordPress.• Contributors can write but not publish. Only

an Editor or Administrator has rights to publish.

• Editorial guidelines provided and all posts edited prior to posting.

• “Blog Operating Plan” laying out roles and responsibilities created.

Advantages

• Very easy to use. Contributors can be trained rapidly and easily.

• Contributors can’t publish and can’t break anything.

• Fast, efficient web publishing process.

• Contributors can blog from anywhere.

Disadvantages

• Security. WordPress.com is not as secure as NOAA.gov

• Gov’t info on a non-gov’t site.

• Dependent on an outside site (WordPress.com) and a parser (Feed2JS).

• Not a true CMS.

Next Steps

• Building upon a successful experiment.

• Install blogging software on NOAA server.

• Identify potential blog topics and bloggers.
